Podkayne's brother is kind of Eustace-y.

The dreaming jewels made a profound impression on me, Can't say why.

I resisted Melville's charms until a few summers ago on St Georges Island. I spent two weeks in a hammock on a screened porch, eating buckets of boiled shrimp and reading the annotated Moby Dick. Doing it within earshot of the gulls and the smell of salt spray was one of my better ideas.

Thanks for posting this. Even though you’ve already reached your quota, let me suggest book 1 of my “Potion Voyages” series about a world of magic oceans, whose waters each give powers over different elements, including music (which was professionally produced using the lyrics in the book.)

  1. Old man's war ✓
  2. A Fire upon the Deep ✓
  3. Singularity Sky ✓
  4. Permutation City ✓

Let me suggest another one, Ninefox Gambit, though I'm hesitant to say which category it ought to be in.

How about Involution Ocean, that one can go in beginner, I think.

Permutation City sorta changed my view of what the universe could be. I'm still not sure whether or not that's a good thing.

What about that Singularity Sky sequel, Iron Sunrise? That one is a tough pill to swallow, [spoiler](/s "Since it basically means that space nazis are going to eat everyone's souls, and there's no hope because the future implies that it will happen").

New first short story is up on Amazon.

It's called "Toil," and involves fishing for shark, Pink Floyd music, substance abuse, and other surprises.

as others have said, the book "Endurance" about Shackleton is an absolute classic

I also recently read a book titled "The North Water" which is kind of a murder mystery about Arctic whalers that was chilling and gripping

the Way of Thorn and Thunder: Kynship chronicles
A fantasy retelling of the Cherokee Trail of Tears using Cherokee mythology (and written by a Cherokee, if that helps)

Chathrand Voyage novels non-standard fantasy, mostly aboard a single giant sailing ship

Gravedigger Chronicle by Alan Campbell i'd say this is new weird - it's like Perdido Street Station with navy seals and mermen (well, the Unmer)

I'm very sure that it's Dragon's Triangle by Christine Kling.

Hidden Things covers a relatively small distance, but travel is central to the plot. It's urban fantasy that plays on the idea of American roadtrips and those little places in between places. The book has it's faults, but I think it did a great job capturing the feeling of what it's like to be on the road and also in describing the locations traveled through (mostly by not over-describing them.)

The other one that comes to mind is the Chathrand Voyage series, which is an entire series centered around a single trip. That trip is by boat, however, so there's not a whole lot of 'road' involved. Still, it does have a bit of an Odyssey feel to it and there are quite a few stops along the way (though much of the series does take place in and around the ship itself.)

I got the original and the first sequel as a two-in-one on Amazon. There's really only one other legit sequel and a digital short story.
