I use this hummingbird needle threader/thread cutter and haven’t had any issues with it on planes. No issues with bringing one needle either. I’m sure you would be fine with more, but I haven’t tried it.
I have a threader similar to these with a tiny blade at the bottom for quick slices. I don't think I've ever used it, but I've never needed to, I've always had my scissors close by.

Get one of those needle threaders and it won’t matter how big the needle eye is! I like using tiny Hiroshima needles and those would be difficult to thread without the threader.

I found some awesome needle threaders for super cheap on amazon that use a thin piece of piano wire (instead of the flat metal hook other ones seem to have). You could maybe try those? Here’s a link
