Some of the stainless models are ridiculously overpriced. A moka pot shouldn't cost much more than ~$40... Stainless may produce better results though. Other than that, most moka pots are identical in design and functionality.

Excuse my unknowing, I'm living in a muslim country. What's the deal with Mormons and coffee? Is it banned like alcohol in Islam?
Yes I can ask google, but I like human interaction.

I recently bought this dripper from bialetti and it just works well. Cheap and makes good coffee. Also being plastic really helps because normally they use porcelain, which is not sturdy at all. Here's the link.

A cheap thing is cold brewing concentrate that can be mixed with boiling water or cold milk to drink.

A stove-top “mocha pot” [EDIT: MOKA POT] for $12 can also brew concentrate https://www.amazon.com/Primula-Aluminum-Espresso-Maker-Makes/dp/B000YDOMHU.

I use an $8 Italian hand pump frother even though I have an espresso machine with a steamer because I like the tighter foam. https://www.amazon.com/Cremafacile-Milk-Frother-by-Biesse/dp/B002U7F00G

Or try a nice stovetop set for that price? They're a nice upgrade from the humble classic stovetop espresso maker

This gives you some leftover budget to get some beans and a milk frother

u/deag · 5 pointsr/Coffee

Perhaps not exactly to your specification but definitely one of the best stovetop coffee makers on the market. Bialetti 12 cup Moka Express. By 12 cups, it means 12-2 oz servings which is equal to about 3 mugs of coffee. It can be used to make delicious espresso or if you go light on the coffee grounds, it will make a pretty mean cup of joe. Also these things last forever.

Get a french press.
http://www.amazon.in/French-Press-Coffee-Maker-600ml/dp/B00VFQV3SG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1465146533&sr=8-1&keywords=french+press
or better a stove top espresso maker-

You can either use it with coffee beans ground in a spice grinder, or just coffee powder. Keep the coffee ground in the refrigerator and it will keep for a long time. If you want foamed milk here is a guide-

If you look for the Pezzetti brand moka pots (there is really no functional difference between them and Bialetti), you can get a 1 or a 3 cup for £10.50 inc postage

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pezzetti-Stove-Top-Moka-Pot/dp/B0055BXPWY/

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pezzetti-Stove-Top-Espresso-Italian-Made-Coffee/dp/B00LFSJQ8S/

or - frankly - a no brand copy for £5 including postage on Ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Espresso-Stove-Top-Coffee-Maker-Continental-Moka-Percolator-Pot-2-6-9-12-/310744774362

They are all - give or take - the same. Don't feel obligated to pay £15 for the neat Bialetti logo.

u/ardent_asparagus · 4 pointsr/whatisthisthing

They're the inside parts of this kind of coffee percolator.

This all metal MokaPot is the one I’ve had good success with.

Per me cappuccino e cornetto masterrace. Se sono a casa di solito solo il primo con questa (non ridete pls).

I've been looking at moka pots recently as well, and that stainless steel Primula is what I would buy. From what I've read, stainless produces a cleaner, less metallic taste than the traditional aluminum pots.

You should check out Bialetti, the most famous moka pot manufacturer. They have every type ranging from traditional aluminum, stainless steel, 'brikka' model for higher pressure, 'crem' model with a plunger for frothing, even electric models.

I've heard good things about the Krups, but it's too pricey for my blood. The Blue Bottle one looks nice but the long cork handle seems awkward.

If I could buy any moka pot, it would be a Bialetti 6956 Musa 6-cup.

I've used one, you can find them on amazon

http://www.amazon.com/Bellman-Stove-Espresso-Cappuccino-Maker/dp/B000FDN1LM/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1347290222&sr=8-4&keywords=stovetop+steamer

I have a E61 machine at home too so I can give you a comparison.

The steaming power is more than capable, provides steaming power that is sufficient to microfoam. (not sure if its the same power level as a dedicated espresso machine but its strong enough for its purpose).

The problem is that the steaming power is very limited in duration. You have a short window in getting your milk steamed properly so any mistakes usually means you end up short. For instance (this is a really rough estimate for just explaining what I mean), if steaming milk properly takes about 20 seconds from beginning to end. This machine has around 26 seconds or so of steam duration. After which it just completely fades to 0 pressure.

With the above point, you can only make 1 drink at a time and the recovery time is long (you need to reboil/heat and wait for pressure to build). There's also no real way to tell if the steam is ready other than opening the valve.

Scares the be-jezus out of me to use. Its like using a pressure cooker. The only reason why you get steam is cause you trap this ridiculous amount of pressure in a pot. So the device requires this giant screw knob to seal it shut. I've never had an issue with it, but i've always felt like I was playing with a bomb everytime I used it.

for those who don't like the time of the espresso machine but also love the taste of a french press i would recommend:

this

it is the only coffee maker you see in spain, and its very quick and makes VERY strong cups of coffee. to drink in the spanish style, make coffee with the above pot and then use one of these to froth some milk after heating in the microwave or on the stove. half of each for a lovely cafe con leche. if you don't want to get the frother, you can just whisk the hell out of some heated milk with a whisk or fork. its a very flavorful cup of coffee in my opinion (i think the whisked or frothed milk tastes great and adds a bit different flavor in any cup of coffee). of course, in spain, they also do something weird to their coffee beans by coating them in some sort of sugar mixture or something early on, giving them a unique flavor. its hard to get a straight answer out of anyone about what they do EXACTLY. i don't think they want people to know.

edit: that may not be the best quality product, but i was just linking to the type, just so people can have an idea. find a better reviewed one if you're actually interested.

I can’t refrain from commenting on this since I’ve been having the exact same thought process. As of now I cannot afford an actual espresso machine and other proper gear, and since I only have a French press, I’m considering the Moka pot. Here’s my take on this:

I’m very much a coffee nerd and I love espresso-based drinks, particularly a latte or a cappuccino. To make a good espresso shot with lovely ‘crema’ on top, you’d need around 9 bars of pressure, which can only be supplied by a proper espresso machine. Even certain ones (worth, say, $100) advertised with more than 10 bars of pressure are not very good because they lack the pressure regulation to maintain 9 bars throughout the whole 20ish second shot. The Moka pot, of course, cannot supply such pressure either. Most Moka pots gravitate around 1.5 to 2 bars of pressure, which is significantly lower than what you need. That being said, I do recommend getting one until you can have a professional setup because:

  • Moka pot coffee is still delicious and much richer/stronger than other types of homemade coffee;
  • You can make your coffee slightly stronger (to get closer to a proper espresso shot) by changing the coffee - water ratio in favour of the coffee;
  • You can buy an inexpensive ($10-15) milk frother or use a French press to froth the milk for your tasty lattes (to use the French press to froth, pour warm milk inside and pump the plunger up and down rapidly);
  • The pot itself isn’t too expensive and can be maintained easily.
Without doubt, I would recommend to go for a Bialetti such as these:

Bialetti 6-cup stove pot espresso maker

    Bialetti Venus Induction coffee maker

    Happy coffee making!

I use a Bialetti or a knockoff brand called Primula.

u/Elasmophile · 3 pointsr/Cooking

This is mine. I actually paid the full $55 a few years ago and I love it. The biggest downfall for me is if you have guests that all want espresso, it gets really hot (duh) on the stove and it takes a while for it to cool down enough to open it and make more.

u/solilo · 3 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Consider a Bialetti moka pot.

It doesn't provide 1L of coffee, but the coffee is much richer (like espresso), so perhaps not as much volume is needed.

u/rossysaurus · 2 pointsr/Coffee
u/night28 · 2 pointsr/Coffee

It's a moka pot. You can find similar ones on amazon like this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EI9AJDQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_BAw4Db8WZ9348

u/bevvbevv · 2 pointsr/keto

you could... but espresso does have a very intense flavor. If I were you, I'd try this with Starbucks before investing in espresso machine.

Secondly, I recommend the little stovetop makers if you go that route. Much cheaper than the electric makers and super easy to use. example of coffee maker. You can find them for $10 at marshall's/ross/home goods.

u/Throwymcsock · 2 pointsr/electronic_cigarette

I got a little Bialetti pour over thing out of Tj Maxx for $5 and it's pretty decent - just put a #2 filter paper in it and off you go. Don't have a gooseneck kettle but just transfer the hot water to a Pyrex jug to pour it easier - for convenience over making a press - or in my case, the wife doesn't drink coffee, and I will drink a 30oz press by myself if left to my own devices - it's pretty decent.

It's this thing here - it's good - http://www.amazon.com/Bialetti-Plastic-Pourover-Coffee-Dripper/dp/B00X16T344

u/trikster2 · 2 pointsr/IKEA

I read the description which is why I asked, it does not say if it does or doesn't.

Folks on the amazon listing claim it does in the quesitons and in the reviews so I'll check it out the next time I'm at ikea. Thanks!

starsGreat SS Pot for the price!
April 12, 2015
this is a review for those who like Moka pots.
Reasons for the 5 stars
Great price(If you buy it directly from the ikea store, costs only 20$)
Stainless steel, every part of it including the filter and funnel
Silicon gasket, better than rubber ones
Induction ready, makes coffee in 3- 4 minutes. I find this as the fastest and easiest method to make coffee for this. I have a few other Moka pots that are stainless steel, but none of the works on induction as they are 18/10 SS.
The only one i would want to pay more price is the Brikka, as its a different product, though i don't own one,
The only disadvantage is you have to make 6 espresso cups at a time. I wish Ikea comes with different capacities like the Bialetti.

u/somewhatstaid · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I use one of their stainless steel models, the Bialetti Venus. The advertising indicates it works on induction, though I cannot confirm from experience.

u/ItchyPooter · 2 pointsr/Wetshaving

The one that power-skeeted on my kitchen ceiling was the Mukka Express model. It's got a pressure valve on it that you mash down in order to steam your milk.

Or in an optimal use scenario anyway.

When it goes bad, the pressure valve blows off and a piss-rod of boiling coffee shots about 10 feet into the air.

u/professorpan · 2 pointsr/food

I use this recipe a lot, actually. Minus the bread, because I don't have sourdough laying around usually. I substitute diced potatoes for the starch, and just toss them in a separate pan, butter, lightly seasoned, medium heat, and cover for 10 minutes.

The recipe is really nice, I think. I start with the pans of vegetables, and once that's started, I grind my coffee beans and boil water to brew in my Vev. I start on the eggs while the coffee while the water boils.

The egg gets done right around when the water boils and the diced potato are done, so I set up the coffee to brew, and by the time I plate everything the coffee is done. I have the timing down pretty perfectly for this recipe.

u/bethhelaine · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I don't drink coffee, but my man does and he loves his [moka pot] (http://www.amazon.com/Primula-Aluminum-Stovetop-Espresso-Coffee/dp/B001J1L59E/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1409798383&sr=8-2&keywords=moka+pot). You make it on the stove and it makes a STRONG coffee.

u/Magic_Flying_Monkey · 2 pointsr/Coffee

First of I'd reccomend a Bialetti moka pot. Get this model if you are only going to make one cup at a time or this one if you will be making more(up to 3 cups). As for a milk frothing wand, I got good results with the aerolatte. Keep in mind that you will only ever get ok coffee with this kind of set up, but obviously a lot better than instant!

u/_northernlights_ · 1 pointr/Coffee

I do use a Moka pot on induction (but I don't call this an espresso). I use this one and I very much like it: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B078SDTG7F/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 . It's $49.

u/AmNotLost · 1 pointr/Coffee

Maybe this one

u/Kameniev · 1 pointr/Coffee

Two main options as far as I'm aware:

Moka pot - pretty nice fauxspresso but strong, concentrated stuff - even diluted with water, in my experience. That's your classic, I think: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bialetti-Express-Espresso-Maker-Silver/dp/B0000AN3QH/ref=asc_df_B0000AN3QH/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=226302833456&hvpos=1o2&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3432565874942260391&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1006886&hvtargid=pla-321213670958&psc=1&th=1&psc=1

Aeropress, either following a concentrated espresso recipe, or better using a Prismo attachment ( https://fellowproducts.com/collections/brew/products/prismo). I only found these on the aeropress sub the other day and am yet to try them, but reviews are pretty good! I need to sort out a leak in my press but will definitely be giving it a shot (please clap).

I second the moka pot. I grew up with them and still use one whenever I'm camping. I recently saw the Bellman SS Stove Top Espresso/Cappuccino Maker and may replace my moka pot with it. A bit higher than your budget, but something you may want to consider.

Tough to know.. I recently upgraded to the Bellman cappuccino maker, which is the same, but with a pressurized moka pot included. A little more pricey, but a little more all-in-one and still available on Amazon.

Ah, I thought that piece on the bottom was a socket.

I just looked up a video on its usage though and it's not what I'm looking for however. I'm looking for someone that makes multiple cups of normal percolated coffee. That looks like it makes 1-2 at a time and requires some ultra fine grind?

Either way the only difference in what I'm looking for, from say the first result (farberware if it's the same for everyone) if you look on Amazon for a stove top percolator should be the material it's made of.

Edit: looks like this one may be induction capable

u/CrocodileJock · 1 pointr/Coffee

I'm going to throw the Kamira Moka Express into the mix. Not a Moka pot, more of a stovetop "Moka machine". Don't own one, so no personal experience, although I've heard the coffee is similar to that produced by a Brikka.

u/jnux · 1 pointr/Coffee

I used a Vev Vigano 4-cup for about 7 years and it served me very well. There wasn't any kind of coating, though the inside of the heating vessel wasn't polished, so it is a dull grey inside.

I stopped using it after 7 years only because I upgraded to a full-blown espresso machine. I go back to the moka pot sometimes just to experiment, and this one does very well.

u/OrePhan · 1 pointr/Cooking

We make espresso with a stainless stovetop percolator similar to this

Our aerolatte frother recently died, we liked it until we replaced it with this which makes an incredible microfoam

u/caresaboutstuff · 1 pointr/infertility

Hot damn, that’s great!
When we got married we got one of these, it broke about two years ago, but we got 8 - 9 years out of it!
Not the same as the coffee shop, but not bad.:)

I'll summon /u/coffeegator21. We don't know each other but I know you have good taste. Coffee and Marvel? Plus you can crochet? That is awesome. You seem like a cool person. I think you need the espresso maker you have on your wish list.
