That's a tough call OP. I think personally, if it was me, I'd find a used Honda or Toyota SUV for around 1,200, and then spend 800 dollars on gear for living out of that vehicle, including gear to live in case that vehicle breaks down within the next year.

800 dollars on gear is actually plenty of money...I'll give you a rough list just as example:

  1. Tent w/Rainfly - $76.00 - https://www.amazon.com/Mountainsmith-Lichen-Peak-Tent-1-Person/dp/B072J9LDFK/ref=sr_1_20?s=outdoor-recreation&ie=UTF8&qid=1549583739&sr=1-20&keywords=solo+tent&refinements=p_n_size_browse-bin%3A2204488011

I mean all of that is less than $550.00 in gear that you can use while being a trainhopper/hitchhiker, or living in a van or SUV. In fact, you'd probably be twice as prepared as most other tramps and vagabonds you meet on the road, in gear alone. Plus if you can still afford 1,450 for a used van or SUV in good condition?

Also, keep in mind those prices are retail prices. Shop around at thrift stores, pawn shops, military surplus stores, ebay, and you'll easily cut those prices nearly in half. For example, that leatherman knife can be found at pretty much any pawn shop in America for around 30-35, bucks, easy.

Have that same set. I got some 550 from Amazon that's a light blue with a dark blue diamond pattern in it. Looks great.

Edit: Amazon link. 500+ colors, seems like it’s always going up.

Recommend you replace TOUGH-GRID 750lb Paracord/Parachute Cord with 1/8 UHMWPE. It'll save you some weight and bulk.

Anyone had good results using 1.18mm micro-cord for a tarp? I have some extra lying around and thought I'd try it on a new Borah tarp I just purchased. Any better alternatives?

*Unless you have replacement mouse feet, be careful removing your current set*

A good set of pens is really fun for creative types. Pentel SignPens (either these or these) are fantastic. Sakura and Stabilo make great ones as well. I like previously offered highlighter ideas and love my new see-through ones that I linked there. Also what about a set of sketch pencils?

What about some paracord and accessories for making guinea pig leashes? There are tons of sites that tell how to make them, she might be into it.

I also just recently got a little more into makeup and found an AMAZING set of cheap makeup brushes as a starter set - These and I'm actually getting them for my 18 yo niece for Christmas.

Best of luck!

UHMPE or dyneema- super high strength. Very low stretch (which may or may not suits your needs).

dyneema

The beads are from amazon. I liked the simplicity and how they gave good grip. link

You can improvise a barricade simply by using cordage tied around a door knob and secured to a fixed point close to it (like a railing or something). Keep in mind there might not be anything to barricade a door with like a bathroom. You can get technora cordage which is pretty thin and twice as strong as paracord: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074B5ZJ9J/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ZAk3DbCJKGTRE

Used the stock cables and just stripped them down. Edit: not sure if that link takes you to the right color but it is color number 147.

zing-it. (and occasionally 7/64 dyneema when I have some extra laying around - which is beyond stupid on my part but I figure I can always replace it as needed when I feel the urge to make some more soft shackles or continuous loops)

Edit - I read it as "Structural Ridgeline". I only use Zing-it for my tarp's continuous ridgeline. Although I recently bought some of this stuff in the 1.6mm and 2.0mm sizes to see how it would do as a structural ridgeline or tarp ridgeline:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XTL3K7Z/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Edit 2 - I also use Nama Claws with my Zing-It. I lot of people feel like they are unnecessary because they can achieve the same results with their choice of cordage and implementation of the Prussik knot. All I know is that I must suck at making Prussik knots because I've had them slip/slide on weekends with lots of rain and wind (never had a "failure" though). Meanwhile the Nama Claws have never moved on me (even in the winds at Grayson Highlands).

Coupla thoughts.

  • For most of my rope, I use ladder winders, such as like this: https://www.amazon.com/West-Coast-Paracord-Organizing-Compact/dp/B06X1GL1C5
  • I store the ladders in 2 Ikea shoe storage thingies that hang in the closet. such as like this: https://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/70250854/ Each colour gets it's own pocket.
  • I do have some longer bits that don't really work on a ladder winder. Those I keep coiled, in a rope bag. There are a lot of ways to coil a rope, they're all pretty good. Best bet is to find one you like and go with it. Whatever you do, don't do the old "around the thumb and then over the elbow" trick. That just makes a hot mess.

It’s a lot but I don’t mind having extra for camping.
