I've always heard that one of the best books on survival is the SAS Survival Handbook. It looks like there is a SAS Urban Survival Handbook too that might be useful for imitating Bourne although it does not have as many 5 star reviews.

We have a food tote that we put the food in and it works well. It also makes it easy to mix it. The main thing is just don't let it air out all the time. As long as there is even a minimal seal keeping the moisture from escaping, it will stay good longer.

this is basically what we have

The ugly part of such kits is that usually require some amount of rotation. I try to rotate the items before they become useless to regain some of the monetary value.

  • I find that bottled water is usually fine. I rotate mine every three months (monthly in the car kits during the summer heat). If you are concerned about it, watch for sales in the camping section at Target and pick up some Aluminium or Stainless bottles. They usually seal quite well and remember to allow for freezing when you fill them. A few months ago, I picked up several at $1.15 each and I've swapped out most of the plastic bottles in the car. The costly alternative is to buy the tiny Datrex water pouches. Personally, I think they taste strange.

  • Gas cans are another problem. I really want to get one of these collapsible ones, but I haven't found a local source. They seem rather pricey for a single use item. Currently, I have a small siphon and toss a 5-gallon can from Walmart in the back when traveling any great distance.

  • Handwarmers do tend to expire. It is a maddening and inescapable fact. I try and avoid items like this that eventually lose all utility, but until I find a reasonable alternative, I'll probably keep using them. My wife uses them when we ski, so we do use a few per year. We try to buy them in bulk off season and just replace them as needed.

In your FAK/ repair kit throw in a couple large pieces of tenacious tape, some duct or gaffer tape, small tube of adhesives (shoe goo and seam grip ), Leukotape, tiny spool of heavy thread, and 3 large needles. UL gear is great and you definitely dont need some ultra strong 1000D codura nylon backpack that weighs 9 lbs on its own, but it is fragile and a few multiuse repair items can go A LONG WAY.
