This is my winter/spring outfit for a temp of -10C and above. I use this to go to college, as I don't have to walk much from my home to the college (4 streets).

I'm a union carpenter in NYC, my boots take a beating. I have been wearing Thorogood boots for the past 5 years and they are great. They hold up really well. I get 1.5 years out of a pair and they aren't even really trashed just worn when I replace them. They are American made and reasonably priced. Most of the Ironworkers I see are wearing them too so you know they are tough.

I like these, considering they can be dressed up some, although they're slightly out of budget. Check out nordstrom rack, look for brands like Allen Edmonds, Loake, and Redwing.

More casual, you would look at the L.L. Bean Katahdin, which is made by chippewa. It's also slightly out of budget. The key is that the boots I've linked are all stitched construction. Instead of the sole being glued on, they're stitched instead. While they can be resoled easier, the main selling point is the fact that they won't fall apart in less than a year.

Edit: I wore these in highschool and they served me well. Not everyone's cup of tea, though.

I'm looking to get leather boots with tread for less than $200 for the winter.

Here's my criteria

- Full leather (or at least look like it and still be quality)

- Budget is around $200, but $150 is the sweet spot

- Needs tread enough to be able to walk on somewhat icy/slushy pavement (just not a smooth sole)

- Not necessary, but I do dig a cap toe

Here are some styles I really like (in this order):

  1. Thursday Boot Company "Captain" Boots (doesn't appear to have any tread, really, but I love the style)
  2. Wolverine 1000 Mile Boots (out of budget, but fantastic style and no tread at all)
  3. Florsheim Estabrook Cap Toe (nice style and tread but very skeptical of brand quality)
  4. Chippewa Engineer Boots (still like the style, not sure about the tread)

    My questions for you guys:

  5. Do you have experience or knowledge of any of the above examples or their brands? Is there anything to watch out for that I may not have noted?
  6. Do you know any (cheaper) alternatives I may not have considered?

I bought these Chippewa boots back in January, few weeks after I started and noticed how often my feet kept getting hit/caught by the most random things. I work market, and the freezer/cooler doors that have broken corners will hit me constantly, the fast mover green carts will hit the back of my heel if I'm pulling and not paying attention.

I switch between those and a pair of clarks boots I bought a few years ago every other day when working. Any scratches that happen still look good on boots. I only clean with a brush every now and then/wipe down with a damp cloth or paper towel. Both have some random dr. scholl's inserts for support. Both are almost an inch larger than my "normal" shoe size.

For the Chippewa's, took about a week to break in for me.

u/bortalizer93 · 3 pointsr/goodyearwelt

i would get viberg.

EDIT

sorry, didn't saw your budget limit until i scrolled down. hmm, let's see... i believe white's ebay store is doing a clearance sale and now their boots cost $360 shipped using the code BOOTUP14

EDIT2: i meant amazon. here's the link

EDIT3: it's not white's clearance sale. it was amazon's boot sale. #FML

Just got these Woolrich yankees on sale for around $155. Made in USA, Horween, wool flannel lined, commando sole... Love them so far.

u/revicon · 3 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I'm trying to find this pair on amazon, is it this one? https://www.amazon.com/Thorogood-Mens-American-Heritage-Plain-Toe/dp/B00A476RAG/

u/81dwarves · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

These may work for you (Woolrich Yankee). I ordered a pair but ended up sending them back. They had my size for $200 usd and I think they are a pretty good deal for that. The wool lining is really comfortable. I ended up sending them back because I decided I didn't really need them and I didn't like that the tongue is NOT gusseted.

Hi! I'm looking to purchase my first pair of nicer boots, (I have one pair of timberland chocorua's that i've used for hiking and backpacking for a few years but I think they're nearing the end of their lifespan) and I need help.
I'd like a pair of boots that would last at least a few years, with a budget of up to $250.

They won't be my dedicated hiking or backpacking boots, but I'd like for them to be able to take light duty and act as substitutes for either activity. Waterproof is not necessary either.

They don't need to be super dressy, but preferably nice enough to wear with a pair of jeans and a button down.
I travel a good amount, and I'd like to only take the pair of boots I have on my feet and wear them for the entire trip. I know many nicer boots should not be worn on consecutive days, as the moisture can rot the innards. This, I think, rules out most of red wing's heritage line and wolverine 1000 miles. I was thinking about LL Bean's Katadhin Iron Works Engineer boots because of the synthetic components inside the boot, and durability.

Aesthetically, I love the look of Chippewa's service boots and smith tan 6 boots and homestead pebbled boots in tan renegade, and Redwing's blacksmith boots in copper rough and tough. I know danner boots might closely fit the bill, but I genuinely detest how they look.

The boots I had been looking at are: LL Bean's Katadhin Iron Works Engineer Boots (rebranded chippewa apache's with a cap toe). I liked them because the aesthetic is close to what I like (a bit darker, and per my understanding the leather will never develop a nice aged patina which sucks) and they seem to be able to take a beating and still look ok. Some of the reviews say they're decent for hiking as well. They also have LL Bean's Guarantee (now less than it was a week ago) behind them.

https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/49464?

And LL Bean's Eastpoint (LL Bean has a 25% off sale). The leather looks identical to their Engineer boots, are very similar looking and they're waterproof.

I really appreciate any help, and I know I'm super green in all of this. Thanks guys

Hello Guys!

Long time lurker, first time poster here. I need your help :(

I currently live in Boston and I am going to experience my first real/horrible winter and I was wondering what boot should I buy?

I read that RW Iron Rangers and 1k Wolverine are not good for snow and harsh winters like Boston's due to slippery soles. So I went ahead and purchased the Chippewa Apache with lugged sole (I am not sure if I bought the correct one lol).

This is the link of the shoes I bought: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004TK2T92/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

However, after purchasing the shoes I saw these boots from Chippewa also and I am not sure if they are better for me since they are "insulated/waterproof" given the city I live.

Link: http://www.amazon.com/Chippewa-Tough-Insulated-Lace-Up-Utility/dp/B00CA1B1Z0/ref=sr_1_3?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1417321429&sr=1-3

Link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A9YBQFK/ref=s9_hps_bw_g309_ir14?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-9&pf_rd_r=1V7HFF3V1NE9RW46ZNRW&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1865632602&pf_rd_i=2587207011

They are both at the same price of ~$150 ($105 after promo code). What is your recommendation?

On another note, I also bought these Chippewa boots (not Apache though) because the color looks amazing but I am not sure if the sole will be slippery in wet/snow terrain, what do you think? Its sole is not lugged enough?

Thanks for your help and sorry for my crappy English haha, not my native language.

u/jujuben · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

If they have to be black and you don't mind a more military style, Corcorans are well within your price range, well made (full grain leather, Vibram sole, Goodyear welt), can take a beating, and clean up reasonably well. I have a pair of Corcoran IIs that are pretty much the only piece of my old Army gear that I still use.

I think the ones without the speed laces are probably more better for wearing into an office, or maybe these if you want to keep the lug sole.

u/SparhawkJC · 2 pointsr/rawdenim

The standard makeup they had available on Amazon for a bit, looks like they only have a few sizes in black available now: https://www.amazon.com/Whites-Boots-Americana-Semi-Dress-Black/dp/B00K763URC/ref=lp_8620644011_1_4?srs=8620644011&ie=UTF8&qid=1501095024&sr=8-4&th=1&psc=1

I got them in brown chromexcel which appears to be sold out.

u/SkeletorYouFools · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Just got a pair of these in 9.5D: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BP45NMU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

There's maybe ~.5 inch from the end of the boot and my big toe so I could definitely do a 9D, but I'm worried about them being way too narrow if I was to go down half a size.

Is the size difference going to be a big deal once they're broken in? They feel pretty snug - except the extra room at the front - and I don't have any slip when I walk. So, not sure they're worth returning.

u/rigertplakento · 1 pointr/goodyearwelt

just bought these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00J03NFJ6/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

wondering if anyone knows general boot care tips for them? Already have the shoe trees for them, but no idea on what to clean/condition with.

any advice would be nice.

u/drblindguy · 1 pointr/frugalmalefashion

Can anyone comment on this

are they good for the snow and rain

u/PichuCobbler · 1 pointr/goodyearwelt

I need some steel toed boots for a job I will be starting soon. I am interested in getting some good quality boots to last a long time and be comfortable but I also like to look nice. I like the look of Katahdin boots from LL Bean for example. Any suggestions? Ive seen these boots recommended. Are their price point to quality and comfort worth it? What about these?

Maker/Model: White's Semi Dress

Price: $200

Wears/Condition:Only worn about 5-6 times, just a little to tight in the toes for my tastes.

What do you guys think of these Chippewa boots? I don't own any pair of boots and want to start dressing better, would these go well with Chinos or jeans? Good starter boots?

Bonobos White Oxford for $60? Or Chippewa Apache lug sole in black for $120? Really want some black boots, but not sure if I want to drop that much right now cause I've been spending so much. Also I know the Bonobos oxfords fit me really well and are good quality, but it's just a white oxford (which I don't own).

Moc (moccasin) toe boots. A popular pair are Red Wing. They're pricey, but the quality reflects it. They'll last you a god damn long time if you take care of them.

u/ZeWarden · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Check out these.

u/Australopiteco · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I'm lusting these lately.

u/FTFallen · 1 pointr/frugalmalefashion

If you're into a different style, these are $154. I've had my eye on them for a few weeks. Price finally bottomed out.

Not sure thats true, based on these photos the Cordovan and Oxblood from Chippewa look pretty distinct from each other.

Original Chippewa Collection Men's 1901M25 Engineer Boot, Cordovan, 8 D US https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BP45D02/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ksYwCb4ERXR3K

These are rumored to be de-branded Chippewa Service Boots, which sell for $250+.

Different than the $150 Handcrafted Laceup

u/balitimore · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I have Wolverine 1000 mile in Tan.

Should I buy: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BP44FUG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

or

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0036VN8L8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ?

Neglect the price difference. It is about the same due to the discount. However, the tan Chippewas seem like they are alot better quality than the chocolate apache one for about the same price.

u/SeeSickCrocodile · 1 pointr/frugalmalefashion

This is $140 in a 9 1/2 before the 20% off... Not certain it qualifies, but it's a whole lot of boot for under 150, anyway.

u/chameleon_circuit · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Also looking at this color as well, not sure which one to get. Black Walnut

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Actually I did a half second of research and I think I found them

http://www.amazon.com/Corcoran-Mens-Field-Work-Boot/dp/B008M2284O#

u/HSTFU · 1 pointr/frugalmalefashion

I need a boot that's under $150 that is laced up and NO SPEED HOOKS because my ankle's fucked up and I prefer to keep em lose higher up. They don't have to be a wedge, although I do prefer wedge, but I already have these Dickies trader work boots for about 8 months and they feel great, no discomfort to my surprise.

u/theDaveB · 1 pointr/goodyearwelt

Can I just double check, these ones please. Want to make sure they correct before buying.

Amazon

u/zshguru · 1 pointr/goodyearwelt

I don't know what reasonably inexpensive means, because that's relative, but as far as where price and quality intersect, I recommend the Thorogood brand for actual work boots. Anything by them is fine, but I like these and at around $200 you get a lot of boot. I own the soft-toe version and they're by far my favorite shoe to wear due to their comfort. They're not the cheapest but not the most expensive and I feel you get your money's worth.

I love Red Wing and own their 606 and 676 soft toe boots and if I had to choose between those and the Thorogood I'd choose Thorogood purely for comfort. It's not even close. In fact I might sell my 676 because I won't wear them anymore due to the Thorogoods being so awesome.
