You might not get the beard you wanted, but what you have can get close, minus the connecting mustache. Don't sweat that.
First: Shampoo your beard every time you shampoo your hair, and use a heavy beard balm after you dry it as part of your morning routine. I use honest amish heavy duty. Use a bb sized amount, rub between your hands real good, and run through your beard and mustache.
Second: After applying balm, comb and flatten. Mustache to the sides, cheeks down and back. I do chin down and neck up, but experiment with all down too.
Third: Right before your next shower, comb your beard and break out your trimmers. 1 change from step 2, comb your mustache straight down over your lip, but do comb the mustache at the corner of your mouth to the sides. You want to trim any mustache hairs that hang over your lip JUST to the top of where your upper lip changes color back to your face tone. Don't trim all your mustache hairs to the same length, just carefully use the bare trimmer to clip the hairs that hang over your lip. Put two fingers above your Adams apple and trim from there down your neck to establish a center. Now trim a neck line. Guide here. Don't worry about a cheek-line yet, do that in a week or two. Ask a roommate/family member/trusted friend for help trimming your neckline. Awkward, but less awkward than messing up your neckline :).
Fourth: Wait a week. Your hair should begin to "train" and stay in those directions more often. Give it a week and see how you feel. If you're still unhappy with progress, either go to a barber with beard experience or go with the other suggestion to try a goatee. Keep the mustache trimmed like step 3 and comb every day.
In the end, not having the beard you want feels terrible, but your beard is not terrible. Confidence is acting like you have or can get what you want. Stay confident my friend, and your beard will be awesome.
Beard oil for sure. That will help with it getting caught but u'll still need to brush it more often. Losing beard hair is inevitable alot usually isn't much unless it's like chunks at a time.
The link is my go to. It's the best bang for ur buck, smells nice, always leaves the beard feeling soft. U can put it on in the beginning of the day or at night before u sleep.

As for the moustache, they do sell curved scissors to cut where it curls into ur mouth if u still want to keep the girth of it. Otherwise I personally use the #1-#2 guard on those trimmer combos. This way u still have the coverage without the bothersome length.
I don't know what others do, but here's my routine that works nicely.
Condition with beard conditioner every day. I'm currently using [Polished Gentleman](Polished Gentleman Beard Growth and Thickening Conditioner - With Organic Beard Oil - For Best Beard Look - For Facial Hair Growth - Beard Softener for Grooming https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01A9FEVYQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_1BFOyb54QRKD5).
I use [Grave Before Shave Shampoo](GRAVE BEFORE SHAVE BEARD WASH SHAMPOO 6oz. Tube https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017Y3YG5U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_ECFOyb426HK13) on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
I'm also using Grave Before Shave oils and balms, and I'm more than a little upset they haven't made a conditioner yet because I think it would be glorious.
I'll link articles in the bottom of this comment. As a bit of additional info, i've been studying anatomy and physiology along with a short course in dermatology as part of studying physical therapy. I have the danish equivalent of an average A-grade in each of these spanning a year and a half.
Anyways, the (very rough) science of it:
Starting late puberty an onwards throughout adult life, many male bodies will start to produce a hormone called DHT (Dihydrotestosterone). This is basically a "super-testosterone" that increases the growth of hair follicles around the body (facial hair, chest hair, back hair and so on). DHT also has a side effect of narrowing the hair follicles on top of your head, which, along with other hormones, usually leads to stuff like male pattern baldness since the follicles eventually gets starved from nutrition or simply cannot grow anymore. This is also why you'll see a lot of naturally bald young men with amazing beards.
DHT production continues to ramp up through your twenties and even into some people's thirties. This is why you'll see some people's facial hair not really setting in until they're in their mid-thirties. It's also the reason you're able to grow a beard now while not being able to at 21.
Shaving does absolutely nothing to stimulate hair thickness/growth, however it can give the illusion of making your beard thicker as it cuts down the fastest growing hairs, giving the slow growers time to catch up.
Think of it like this - if a woman wanted to look like a man, she could just start shaving her face every day. Since everyone, both men and women, have small fine hair follicles all over their bodies, this would lead to her eventually growing a beard according to your hypothesis. Any certified doctor will never give this advice, instead they will give her testosterone hormones that slowly starts evolving these hair follicles, giving them more thickness and speeding up their growth time.
TL;DR: Shaving does not improve beard thickness or growth. Is just helps keep the hairs at an even length. Hormones are what makes the magic happen.

Unfortunately i couldn't find scientific articles relating specifically to this subject, but this book by Kurt Stenn explains it very well: https://www.amazon.com/Hair-Human-History-Kurt-Stenn/dp/160598955X?tag=bisafetynet2-20
In short, i'm not talking bollocks. Also, you're the one who put out a statement in the first place, it's your job to back up that claim with evidence. Would've been far quicker for you to just google it than to ask for me to disprove that claim.
You never know unless you try. You need to start stimulating your hair follicles to promote growth by applying oil and brushing gently. Every morning and every night: Wet you’re beard with warm, NOT HOT, water, pat dry until your face is slightly damp and Start using 3-4 drops of beard oil. Rub it into your hands and then gently massage the product into your beard. After the oil has been properly massaged into your skin and beard, lightly brush your beard downward with a boars hair beard brush (you can save the comb for when it’s longer) to stimulate your hair follicles and evenly apply the product. The amount of oil you use and the tools you use for your beard will change as it gets longer but these steps should be enough until your beard length reaches like 0.5 inches in length.
Trim your neck line up. Make everything neat and uniform. I'd recommend a decent boars hair brush. As lloydthedroid said you can get one for around 4 bucks but from my experience I'd say go for one a bit better then that. I like this one. It's solid enough for normal use but soft enough that it doesn't tug or pull too bad like cheaper brushes I've used.
Edit: sorry if the link doesn't work right...currently at work on mobile.
Thanks here’s the links for the products I’m using:
Beard balm (daily use, followed by combing): https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00R6KEWJ2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_z2yMAbR8464VH
Beard shampoo (once every other day): https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00LHUXFNG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_j4yMAb6Q26GHE
I also exfoliate everyday with a sensitive face scrub.
I do have quite naturally oily skin which doesn’t help with acne.
It's extremely personal what scent you like and what works for your beard. I've tried dozens of different styles, but I've come to the conclusion that at my length (about 3-4 cm or longer), my beard needs a beard balm. If I wear it shorter (as I do sometimes), oil is fine.

The last beard oil I used that was decent, that wasn't very expensive, was bulldogs beard oil - bulldog beard oil

The balm I'm currently using is Mr Bear - Bear beard balm

Edit: My beard is coarse, thick and also wavy.

Hi. No, you don't need a prescription to buy Minoxidil, neither use vitamins. My vitamin is One a Day for men. And my Minoxidil is from Kirkland: https://www.amazon.com/Months-Kirkland-Minoxidil-percentage-Treatment/dp/B008BMOEGA/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=minoxidil&qid=1556740675&s=gateway&sr=8-3&th=1&psc=1

I'm sure if you use Minoxidil, you will have in a full beard in a 8 months or so.
I use similar scissors to amazon link to trim the bottom edge of the moustache every two weeks to cover some but not all my upper lip. That’s shorter than this pic. Length looks good in this pic. Length is up to you. If it’s cut a bit short it will grow out soon. I suggest take weekly pics and then compare shorter VS longer. That’s how I decided on the shorter beard look. And use scissors to trim each moustache extension to match.

Just get some softner http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PEEZ07K
Best investment for an unhappy wife
I have Cerave Moisturizer maybe I’ll give that try. Thanks for your offer but I already have a beard oil. I I can use beard jelly
Do NOT get the one blade. I loved it the first few times I used it, but the blades wear quickly and start to pull hair. It’s so frustrating. I replaced my Panasonic rechargeable one that was 5 years old with the one blade and I regret my decision every time I use it. I looked it up on amazon and the price for my old trimmer has dropped by roughly 50% since I originally bought it, and I just bought a new one, so thanks for that. 👍🏻
This is what I had.
