Not sure how much you're willing to spend, but here's a few ideas based on you saying that you doubt she would want a kit.

Thread

I would get a bundle so she at least has different colors to get started right away:

25 colors - $8

or

100 colors = $25

Cloth (Aida)
These are sold in different colors, and various count (holes per inch). For a beginner, I'd probably go with a 14 count in a beige or white (easy to see the holes). Just linking an example here, feel free to buy whatever.

12 x 14 inches cloth 14 count - $3
Go nuts if you want, pick a few colors, whatever fits your budget.

Needles
I use what I have on hand, something like this.

Varierty Pack - $4

Kit
So I know you said no kit, but she needs to learn somehow. Is she handy with youtube? Google search to teach herself? Maybe you should get a beginner kit too.

Kit - $6

Hoop

Simple hoop set of 4 - $8

or

Q-snap - $11

Pattern
You might want to consider getting her a pattern. You know her well? What is she into? There's some free patterns out there, or paid ones. I would get a free or buy one and print it for her so it's all ready with your gift.

Just one example, pick something that suits her, but not too many colors and too complicated to start with
Example - $3

Learning Book
No real advice to offer, but would she read a book if you bought something, or will she go on the internet to learn?

Book sample - $7

Keep in mind that I linked random things for examples, but if you're into it, use these as basis for your own research. You know her best, and what your budget is. I think this is a super sweet gift, best of luck.

This is all that's in my Amazon history relating to my cross stitching (they're US links so I hope that's ok!):

  • Cross stitching needles. These were fine the first time I ordered them, but I re-ordered and they were fatter than the ones I originally had. I have since switched to DMC brand. I got these at Michael's and love them!

  • A qsnap frame and extension kit. I love these frames for bigger projects. If you're just starting out, I would go towards a smaller project. I started out doing different text fonts to really get a feel for the craft. For smaller projects, I would use a regular embroidery hoop. Wood ones look great for a final project but I like to use plastic when stitching the work.

  • Thread Heaven. It's kind of like a thick "lotion" for your thread. It helps keep the thread untangled and allows it to thread through the holes easier. Here's how to use Thread Heaven!

  • With fabric, I usually just go to Michael's and buy some there. I started out with buying this fabric but have since stayed away from folded fabrics. It's a pain to iron out! Buy the rolled kind. I've only used aida fabric. The stuff I buy looks similar to this but there are all different kinds of counts to use (14 count = 14 dots per inch, 18 count = 18 dots per inch, etc).

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask! Here's a few videos I found helpful when I started:

    Finishing a thread

    Welcome! And enjoy! :)

If you like project cards than plastic ones are way better than cardboard ones. And if you do projects with a lot of colors it is amazing to have a Pako needle organizer. I do a lot of Dimensions Gold Collection kits and keeping my needles threaded makes it a lot faster. Other than that the obvious stuff like good scissors with sharp points and a bright light.

I use an Edmunds stand that can be changed to accommodate different size scroll frames. I already had a frame that I had been using and it was pretty easy to drill a couple holes in it to fit into the stand. It makes things a lot easier since I don't have to hold on the frame all the time. Highly recommended.

Of course! I purchased them from Amazon (https://amzn.to/2DrYf9g). They’re actually a flexible rubber but have surprisingly good quality and a nice finished look to them.

u/kota99 · 3 pointsr/CrossStitch

I still separate the strands out first. They just seem to behave better that way. I will also stitch a bit slower to ensure the stitches are smooth and that my tension is staying even. I've found that with more strands there is more chance of stitching so that one strand winds up looser than the others and going slow and paying attention to my tension can help minimize that.

I typically use a larger needle if I'm working with more strands. I also use a needle threader for higher strand amounts (well honestly I use the threader most of the time because my eyes suck). Just not the flimsy cheap wire threaders that break if you sneeze on them. I use needle threaders like this one or this one.

Working with 5 and 6 strands will feel bulky and unwieldy at first, especially if you are used to only using 1 or 2 strands. However the depth and texture that it adds to the finished piece is usually worth it.

Same—I’ve been really happy with Bohin and I think part of it is the needle length. I will caution you that I’ve had to be a little more careful with the Bohins—I’ve definitely managed to bend two of them while weaving in ends (only mildly, definitely still perfectly usable!). This is probably just a bull-in-the-proverbial-china-shop issue, but maybe y’all can benefit from my mistake!

I use "Fine Point Mark B Gone" pens for gridding before I do projects. I've used it for 3-4 projects at this point and it's always washed out just fine. I typically let my projects soak in cold water mixed with 1 cap of Woolite delicates detergent. I put them between two towels and gently squeeze out excess water and then just let them air dry. I iron flat before framing.

I did not know what a degu was, so thank you for introducing me to these cute critters. There are a few illustrative patterns in the "Furry Friends" section of the book Picture Your Pet in Cross Stitch by Claire Crompton. You might also reach out to the creator of this deviant art photorealistic "Degu Montage."

edit: a word

u/Punkin8tor · 3 pointsr/CrossStitch

I'm sorry no. I stitched from a very old pattern I have in a book. It came out during their 50th anniversary! LOL
Ok, I actually have the link to where you can buy it from Amazon...

Also, these are the patterns I was doing when I did that picture tutorial in Imgur. Just FYI.

Just saw this earlier today. I might have to get this one!

Dimensions 'Purity, Strength, Truth' Counted Cross Stitch Kit, 14 Count Beige Aida, 10" x 12" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001CRGMZ2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_gwIUDb5JDP4J2

u/edanna_eldur · 5 pointsr/CrossStitch

It looks a lot like this one:

Frank A. Edmunds Universal Craft Stand,6111 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000YZ7M0W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_oEUVDb0SSMZ6V

I believe all the right parts are connected. And the rest of the loose parts are the frame that holds the fabric. There are so many pieces so you can make the frame the size you like. Like this one:

Frank A. Edmunds Split Rail Scroll Frame Set,2800 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000P0QX06/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_YJUVDbZ79N41S

I have a recliner sofa and use this stand. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00263VUWG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I don’t recline all the way, just feet up and the stand fits along one side of the recliner so not fully straight in front of me but close enough to be workable. It fits well straight in front of me with the recliner down.

I use a water-soluable pen to grid. As long as your floss is colorfast (like DMC), you're good to go. If your floss is not colorfast, you can't wash your project.

I have never had an issue with the pen not washing out or fading. I use this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Dritz-Quilting-Point-Mark-B-Gone-Marking/dp/B001UAF6H6/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1426679738&sr=8-10&keywords=water+soluble+pen+quilting

available at all big craft stores. For the ultra fine tip, look in the quilting supplies

u/SarcasmSlide · 1 pointr/CrossStitch

This is also helpful to me. I splurged on a Pako needle organizer from Amazon here:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002UP67K0/ref=sxts1?ie=UTF8&qid=1492107143&sr=1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65

I do as you mentioned (mixing my threads ahead of time) and load them on needles, waiting and marked on this organizer. That way I can just switch out without slowing down my stitching steam.

u/lost_river · 3 pointsr/CrossStitch

Thank you! It's a Dimensions Kit, you can find it on Amazon here

I was feeling the vibe of this one

u/bisingular · 2 pointsr/CrossStitch

No worries! They're usually available [on Amazon,] (https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B004SEYYXI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_jr.iDbNT6CXVV) at least in Canada, hopefully also in your location as well. :)

u/redditreaderonly · 5 pointsr/CrossStitch

Amazon Link I've had this on WIP for little over a year now.. I think its time to finish it, haha.

u/iliketoarmdance · 3 pointsr/CrossStitch

I've never understood how people can function without these things. They make life so much easier. This is the one I use. :)

u/revdrviking · 2 pointsr/CrossStitch

This looks great! Have you tried using a scroll frame before? I'd go crazy trying to handle that much fabric without one.

u/ShDoNotWakeTheBabies · 1 pointr/CrossStitch

That looks great!

(You know you can buy sticky pads to act as thimbles -- here is one sort, but there are lots.)

u/Chenra · 2 pointsr/CrossStitch

I really like having a needle threader and I can’t imagine working without it. This is the one I have.

u/tfsr · 3 pointsr/CrossStitch

I used 14-count clear plastic canvas, and I stitched with three strands (recommended on the packaging). I alternated between two needles—a 26 tapestry for the x stitches and a thin, sharp sewing needle to pull the thread ends under the back stitches. Here is a shot of the back of the keychain.

u/Mister_Rabbit · 1 pointr/CrossStitch

I typically buy all of my supplies at Michaels but they never seem to have the 14ct in stock, only 10ct. Ended up ordering from Amazon. A few days later I ran across some at Hobby Lobby.

http://www.amazon.com/Darice-2-Piece-Perforated-Plastic-11-Inch/dp/B00114M18S/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1417405022&sr=8-2&keywords=darice+14+plastic

u/Sexynerdofdoom · 4 pointsr/CrossStitch

I found these to be durable and convenient: Thimble-It Finger Pads

They stick well, so you can keep using one for several sessions, just stick it back to the package or some stuff plastic.

u/Stormdanc3 · 1 pointr/CrossStitch

Based on some back searching, I think the pattern can be found here as well

u/Madcutlass · 3 pointsr/CrossStitch

I'm also trying to decide between the Master and the Universal/Michael's version.

Master's Amazon page says it works and has pictures of it with hoop, and stretch frame, not just a scroll frame. I was guessing it would also hold a qsnap. Is this false advertising or a newer model than yours that only takes scroll frames?

Got it online. It was an amazon (UK) purchase.

I actually bought the most recent one at Joann Fabrics in the quilting section. A Dritz Mark-B-Gone. The tip seems far sturdier than the felt tipped one I tried first. That cap didn't even last 2 uses before splitting. https://www.amazon.com/Dritz-Quilting-Point-Mark-B-Gone-Marking/dp/B001UAF6H6

u/Jellogirl · 9 pointsr/CrossStitch

It's a Trolly needle.
They are a laying tool.
There are lots of different types of laying tools.

Via a Pinterest picture matching search, I think I found it. This is from a Claire Crompton book called “Picture your Pet in Cross Stitch”

Stolen entirely from u/Ilickedthecinnabar, thanks for that! I couldn't find it anywhere for the life of me.

u/mrsbatman · 1 pointr/CrossStitch

I fly with mine about once or twice a month. It’s been all over Canada, the us, Australia and Europe. Needles have never been an issue and I use a little pendant cutter instead of worrying about scissors.

u/misskinky · 2 pointsr/CrossStitch

Yes! I sew on planes all the time. Needles are no problem at all, and for like a year after 2011 scissors were completely banned but now any scissors with the blade less then I think 2 inches is allowed so my little scissors have never given me a problem. But if you were really worried they actually make these things that look like a pendants and have a teeny tiny blade to cut thread http://www.amazon.com/Clover-Thread-Cutter-Pendant-Antique/dp/B001DEJM8I

Yeah you definitely don't hear from too many dudes who do needlework, but they're out there! Hell even some former NFL Pro Bowlers are stitchers.

u/MotheroftheworldII · 1 pointr/CrossStitch

Some brands of needles are better than others. I had some bad needles for quite a while from John James. Some of the eyes had not been properly punched and had large burrs in the eye that cut my thread. One packet had this problem with every needle.

I have broken the eye so many times I cannot count. Usually it is a needle that I have been using for a long time and the eye just gets worn to the point of breaking.

I often have several needles on my magnetic needle minders so I am not using the same needle all the time. That does cut down on the sear and tear on the needle.

Now I am using BOHIN needles and I really do like them. They eye of the needles is much smoother than other needles and the finish does not rub off for use. The BOHIN needles do not discolor with use. I am to the point that this is the only needle I will purchase. I have never had a BOHIN needle break. This is the needle I use the most: https://www.amazon.com/Bohin-Tapestry-Hand-Needles-Size/dp/B004SEYYXI/ref=sr_1_12?crid=2SAJ9JB2ACAFV&keywords=bohin+embroidery+needles&qid=1556589943&s=arts-crafts&sprefix=bohin+%2Carts-crafts%2C203&sr=1-12

I work on linen with silk floss so the #28 needle is my size of choice unless I am stitching over one on 36 or higher count linen then I use a #10 beading needle.
