Ours love love loves being outside at any time. She does a perimeter patrol multiple times a day, she’s been out there in snow, rain, thunder, none of it phases her. Very few potty accidents with her, she also has a service bell she rings when she wants to go out, and abuses that power when it suits her.
She is also a hunter and has saved us from multiple bunnies, birds, garden snakes and a rat. She’s still hoping for an elusive squirrel one day. She’s a very good girl and wants to be a good listener but all bets are off if she’s hunting, she can never be off leash outside except in the securely fenced yard and at the dog park.
She howls when her feelings are hurt. It’s the cutest thing ever. Someone left and didn’t take her in the car? Other dog doesn’t feel like playing? Baby howls.
She is crate trained and sleeps in a cat cave in the crate so she can be cozy, it was a great alternative to a pile of blankets for her.
The book Good Owners, Great Dogs was a helpful training guide for me when I got my first dog.
My dachshund, Doobie, is a little terror when it comes to toys. I've found two that hold up pretty well overall.
First, this is Doobie's absolute favorite toy but it never lasts longer than a few hours if I just leave it with him. So I'll only give it to him for play and take it away later to make it last longer. I only mention this one because he loves it so much. It does have stuffing in it, so beware of that. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EB9IV2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This toy is better because it has several squeakers, and it lasts a lot longer. It also has no stuffing to clean up. Though they will still destroy them. But I use this one to play catch (since you can throw it like a frisbee) and tug of war (Since it's easier for you and the dog to hold) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BT8K7J6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This is the toy that I let him have all the time. It took him a year to destroy the first one. I don't know if it's because it's really that tough or because he's getting older. But I think it's worth a try. It's also really funny watching him carry this thing around the house since it's twice as long as he is. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003RQNE7U/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
And the last, honorable mention: My dachshund LOVES this, and it's perfect if you are too busy and they really want to play or the weather is bad so they can't go out or get walked. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003ARUKTG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
https://smile.amazon.com/Zanies-Latex-Pre-Packs-Small-Pieces/dp/B000Y8WTFC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1500562851&sr=8-1&keywords=zanies%2Bdog%2Btoys&th=1
Crusoe has made these popular, but Oscar and all his friends absolutely love these things. They fit perfectly in his mouth and squeak for months. They're the only toys he doesn't destroy within 5 minutes.
I bought stairs for my bed for my little guy to get up and down, and even though he still could and preferred to jump I would scold him for doing so. I made him get used to the stairs. Now about seven years later (he’s twelve now) he prefers the stairs and when he does try to jump, which is not often (maybe once-twice a month when he gets the zoomies), he only has about a 50% success rate. Its much safer and much better for their backs. My gf is a vet tech and has seen many doxies come in with back problems from jumping.
I’m really glad I got him stairs. Please don’t let your little wiener be a jumper!
He is super adorable by the way :)
EDIT: he actually has two sets of stairs. He uses this one for going up and this one for going down.
Dodger's List is a wonderful resource. Another is a book https://www.amazon.com/Honey-Have-You-Squeezed-Dachshund/dp/1945783001

Hug-a-Dog are awesome, and hugely popular:

For hiking & daily use, we prefer a loose-fitting Martingale collar like this one.
My old guy was way too interested in the cat poop too. I would suggest you get or make a top entry litter box like this one.

thank you! :) I followed a pattern from this book

We bought our dachshund a cube toy similar to this one
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0002ARQYQ?pc_redir=1410409765&robot_redir=1
I think it was actually a little larger than that. And he was ably to use it. It took a bit of playing with him with it for him to get the hand of it but he got it. Now he will play with it to get food out even when he has food in his bowl. They do not work well if you have hardwood or tile floors though.
You should invest in one of these. Gus Gus loves riding in the car too...
My Doxie had hair loss on his ears and chest. The vet said that it was heredity and to try Derma-3 gels. They really work but they take some time. My doxie has most of his hair back even though it's a little thin in some places but it looks sooo much better!
If he's barking when you leave the room and you're still at home, I suggest: puzzle toys like this, this, or this - it will keep him occupied and he will begin to cope without you in the same room.
If you're leaving him home alone and you're having issues, I suggest hiring a dog walker with excellent reviews to stop in every day. Check Rover.com or any local pet walking site. And take him to some obedience classes! Depending on the dog, he might really like the interaction with you & it could cut down on him having excessive anxiety.
