Deadly Premonition for sure. It's an xbox360 exclusive (in the US), but was a budget title. its also not for everyone but I think its a game that a whole lot more people should get to play.

It's also a cool game for discussing and gets a lot of different reactions from people. The IGN reviewer that rated it gave it a 2. A few other sites rated it like an 8-9.

2nd edit: Detective Francis York Morgan. God I might replay with this game with you guys if you pick it, and I never replay games. Little more background about it. its basically a survival horror but also like a detective story too, oh and the town is an open world with plenty of sidequests (that actually give you some really good benefits. For instance theres an item that basically removes a lot of the tedium of the game, and I didnt even know it existed until after I beat the game and read about it) The controls are pretty god awful, can't deny that. You move your char like a tank from third Person and I believe can't shoot and move? The driving is hella twitchy but theres ways later in the game you can avoid driving..... It was designed by SWERY. Kinda an offbeat Japanese developer, so expect to see typical 'weirdness' for us westerners, but in a good way.

Umm basically the game centers around a detective protagonist that talks to himself, and has some very interesting internal issues. He arrives in a town in the Pacific NW to investigate a murder and things just get nuts from there... The setting is basically a copy of twin peaks, completely with all the weirdness. I actually started watching twin peaks after playing this game last year but forgot to watch the rest of the episodes.... This game will stay with you and you WILL want to discuss it.

anything that can garner that sort of completely different wildly reactions I think would be great for discussion! If we could just got like 5 people playing it, I think it would be worth it to have a thread going...

I googled it and this came up on Amazon.

It's got very good reviews but also there is an abundance of level design books in the suggestions on the page below. I can't speak for any of them but one of them is bound to be good.

I'm going to be singing Vagrant Story's praises until the day I die. I recommend it. You can get it on the PSN for a cheap price ($8-10). It didn't get a lot of attention because it was released in the same year as Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy IX. I think it deserves some love.

Hello from /r/boardgames! Re: the Amazon link, Hive Pocket gives you the expansions for no added cost, and the game is (obviously) much more portable.
