Hive is fun and the pocket version is super lightweight.

Hello from /r/boardgames! Re: the Amazon link, Hive Pocket gives you the expansions for no added cost, and the game is (obviously) much more portable.

for the record the ideally sized Hive: Pocket I think also has the same expansions is in color and from what I've been told isn't "too big"

How about Jaipur or Hive Pocket? Mr Jack Pocket is also wonderful. Star Realms is the best micro game of the year IMHO, and scales past 2P with multiple decks. Coup is also a lot of fun and quick. I personally do not like Cheaty Mages at all.

Hive

Jaiper

Cash N Guns

3 games that are on my wish list. I have not played them myself, but I have heard good things.

If you can find a local game store, I'd go and ask what their policy is on returns. You could just go with a gift card to the place, though I know that can be impersonal, but if they allow it on unopened games, I'd get him something small like Zombie Dice, Hive, Codenames, Forbidden Island, or Sushi Go (all between $5 and $20 generally). If he has the game he can return it for some dice, or something else he needs, but I think the thought of going out and researching what good games are out there is nice.

[Deep Sea Adventure] ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PU5C5IA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_bZ.TCbZYHZ7MX) is a cute little game. It is a roll and move-you have to balance your ambition and desire to survive and not run out of oxygen. It packs down to a little larger than a deck of cards.

Also, [Hive] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0079L0EKY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_R0.TCb51BVE50) or The Fox in the Forest if you want something a little more nuanced.

Hive is like chess light without a board. And all the pieces are bugs, so that's always fun. I love The Fox and the Forest. The art is pretty, and it's a little more complicated than a generic card/trick taking game.

A couple of additional suggestions - since I don't really like Castles of Burgundy, and I haven't played 7 Wonders Duel.

Just because it's so small, cheap, and still a great game, you should get Mint Works. Kickstarter campaign just finished, and you should still be able to get a copy here. Quick, plays up to 4, and has real strategy. A similar idea is Eight Minute Empires Legends - a small, quick game with real strategy.

Bigger, deeper games - I'm a big fan of Isle of Skye. It's a bit Carcasonne-y, in that you're building an interlocking territory, but it adds a bidding mechanic for the tiles, plus different victory conditions every game.

Five Tribes has been good, but I don't know how it'd work with 2.

If you're looking for a two player game, especially if you're cutthroat people, get Patchwork. If a more abstract strategy game is OK, I've very much enjoyed Hive.

Glass beads and this wonderful game.
