You're in a really good spot right now because you're just getting started out and you don't have to unlearn any bad habits.

First thing I would say is learn what makes a good swing. Not what makes your swing good, but what makes a good swing. Watch the pros. Read books. Get a much information as possible and don't try and replicate what they do, but learn what makes a truly good swing and learn how to make your swing the best it can be.

Here are a couple things to think about:

Right now you're swinging with about 90% your upper body. Your taking the club back with your shoulders and arms and chest, and it's quite visible. When you swing through you are swinging through with your arms and shoulders and your lower body is following your upper body. A proper golf swing is almost exactly the opposite.

Try and think of the swing as something that happens from your hips, torso, chest, and shoulders.

The backswing should start with the big muscle in your left shoulder. Move your left shoulder across your chest for the first movement and when you can't move that shoulder anymore you start rotating your chest. The backswing is complete when your back is facing the target. Do not swing your arms, infact, try and squeeze your arms to your chest (if you lift weights, like when you're doing dumbell flys). Your hands should and arms should always be directly in front of your chest.

This is a good example.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cajtJHmEw3A

Don't try and swing with your arms, the shoulders lead the swing with your chest and then your hips will turn. Also, as you are moving through the backswing, the weight should be able 60-70% of your weight on your right foot.

Now the important part:

Once you've got a good backswing the downswing and impact are the most important part of the golf swing. Infact there are plenty of pro tours who have an unorthodox, or frankly bad backswing, but their downswing and impact position are perfect.

Once you're at the top of your backswing, your swing should start from your LEFT foot, knee, and most importantly your HIPS. Smoothly bring the weight to your left foot and as you do so, twist and rotate your hips. You should feel like someone is pulling on the belt loop at your left hip, and they are pulling it backwards as if they are trying to turn you around. (hope that makes sense). It is this twist that creates the proper downswing and speed for a good swing.

Watch this swing of Rory Mcillroy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qir6STNfJec

Really pay attention to his hips. Notice at the top of his backswing how he loads his legs (like a mini squat) and his HIPS really start that swing. It will look like he's swinging his arms but I promise you, he isn't putting any energy into them at all. His hands and arms are just along for the ride. His arms are just following his body, as his legs squat and his hips start to turn, so does his torso, followed by his chest and arms and hands and the club.

If you pause the video at impact, (during the slow motion part) You will see his belt buckle looks like it is almost pointed at the target, and it's probably about 40 degrees from center but all pros are well through the turn at impact. If you can start to understand that 99% of the golf swing is done by the lower body, the feet, the quad muscles, and the hips, you will be well on your way my friend. It all starts with the lower body, the stronger your legs, the more powerful your swing will be.

I know that this is a TON of information to take in all at once, but as you learn more and read more you will incorporate more of this into your own swing. And you will do it YOUR way, not Rorys, not mine, but yours. Everyone has a unique swing, but there are certain fundamentals that every good golfer has, and that's the hip turn, and the point of impact.

If you're interested in learning more from the pros, these are the 2 books you need to get. And they will explain it far better than I can. Glad you've found golf, it's a lifetime's worth of never ending learning and fun.

The Impact Zone

Five Fundamentals

u/MRTEED · 2 pointsr/golf

I played occasionally as a kid but really started taking the game seriously about 4 or 5 years ago. I'm playing to a 6 handicap at the moment.

As far as equipment, I'd recommend starting off buying a used set off kijiji or from a garage sale. I say this because I've had friends who were eager to learn the game yet after a couple rounds of pure frustration, decided it wasn't worth it.

If your absolutely positive you want to pick up the game for the long term, then you still don't need to break to bank to get a nice set of equipment. People think that a shiny new driver with a $500 price tag is gonna fix their slice but you simply cannot buy your way out of a fundamentally flawed swing. You can get a perfectly fine set of clubs for 2-300 bucks. Hell, I'm still using the original Cleveland Hibore driver which came out about 8 or 9 years ago and see no reason to switch it.

As far as irons go, you should probably lean towards a set of cavity back irons with a wider sole. This will help you get the ball airborne and help promote solid contact with the ball.

To learn how to swing the club, I mainly copied the positions from How I Play Golf by Tiger Woods in the mirror. That along with various tips from golf digest. I now get the odd lesson from the swing coach I've been with for a few years now. I had success doing this but my only regret would be to have gotten a few lessons earlier on. Trust me, once you've got an incorrect motion ingrained into your swing after years of doing it that way, it often takes thousands of swings to correct it.

Anyways, I could go on and on but if you have any more questions I'd be happy to help.

u/Sayoshinn · 1 pointr/golf

Look at tour leaders on putting averages per distance in 2015:

20+ ft: 12.06% (Spieth)

15-20 ft: 30.63% (Mahan)

10-15 ft: 44.8% (Baddeley)

5-10 ft: 65.52% (Koekpa)

And these are the #1 rankings on the entire tour. Not even the average. If you're not hitting it inside 10ft, you will miss well over half your putts. So rule #1 for good putting is ALWAYS hit it closer. It sounds dumb, but it's true. Work on your short irons. But, it is still obviously always uber-important to spend time on the putting green (just ask Spieth and his 1000 putts in a day thing).

I'd check out Dave Pelz's Putting Bible. He also has a Short Game Bible book that's great.

I'm a big fan of drilling with an alignment stick along my putter. Can't putt well if you're never starting the ball on the line you want. This will help make sure you're keeping the club face square the entirety of your stroke. Peter Finch has a great video on it here. Check out the rest of his videos too. Lots of great tips and easy to do drills.

u/nirajguy · 3 pointsr/golf

What are your misses like? You do a lot of great things in your swing...the potential is there. I think a few tweaks will go a long ways! It is a little hard to tell from the video but the only thing I would change about your grip is the gap between your thumb and pointer finger on your right hand. When you have a gap there you lose a lot of control over the club face.

  • Bad grip - http://imgur.com/EB2YEZJ1.
  • Good grip - http://imgur.com/bw53rDr

An old coach of mine would put two sharpie dots on my hand kinda like the 2nd pic and then make me connect the dots.

Next up would be your lateral movement away from the ball. I think some of your overswinging is because you have so much lateral movement. You want to be able to shift your weight onto your right side without having your head and upper body move so much off the ball.

Check out Rory's face on.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0ABM0B9RsA

    Compared to yours... http://imgur.com/MPmkl6m

You want to feel as if you're rotating inside of a big barrel on your backswing. You should load to the left...but your head and upper body should stay more centered over the ball instead of moving away from it. Hope that makes sense!

My last advice, like some of the user comments would be to try and get you're club face more square throughout the swing. That will probably be the hardest change to make. Have you ever heard of a swinggyde training aid? http://www.amazon.com/Swingyde-Golf-Swing-Training-Aid/dp/B000OZI256

It's cheap...really easy to use and provides really good feedback for someone wanting to work on their takeaway and proper forearm rotation to get the clubface square. Hope this helps! LMK if you have any questions.

Those look rather old. I found a more modern set by Falcon called the Fireblade and it seems like they are primarily sold in the UK. If you need clubs tomorrow and thats all you can find they should at least be able to get you on the course. If you had more time you could certainly do better than that set for the money. I would probably up the budget to 150-200 and get a starter set from Intech, Goden Bear, Wilson, PineMeadow or whatever brand your local big box store stocks. Something like this $189 Callaway Strata set or this $119 Confidence set or this $166 Wilson set are all miles better technology and quality wise especially if you plan to keep playing after this event.

I remember having a Falcon brand bowling ball 15+ years ago, if I had to take a guess they were a low end sporting good manufacturer for a few years and then were sold off or changed names.

From another perspective, it might be worth it just for the putter. Looks like an older BeCu Anser.

Edit: I had a look at the search results for golf clubs on craigslist for your area and in the same price range the Walter Hagen, Tommy Armour, and Acuity sets are all much better options that the set you posted.

Hi! I actually set one up. It's ghetto as hell but, here is what I did.

This little net is cheap on Amazon.

Then I went to Home Depot and bought a section of astro-turf for about $17. I had an old grommet kit so I put 4 holes about an inch in from the corners and grommeted them. I use old tent stakes to keep it tight on my lawn.

I stacked a welcome mat on top of a large cutting board and slid it under the Astroturf for a solid flat surface.

[Wiffle golf balls.] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001RFSTN2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_x2qRzbG1HV3QH)

I use a lid from a storage container tub as a ball feeder, propped up at the perfect angle by an empty 12oz LeCroix.

Creative lighting and my 60° Mizuno, the little Bose Bluetooth speaker for the Spotifies and I got a pretty fun night going on in my little back yard.

The result: https://imgur.com/a/SMfnQ

I have one of these (short weighted iron) in my office. It's small enough for a full swing. I also used it to strengthen my left hand grip. I would hold it over my head with the last three fingers of the left hand only -- you can really start to feel the burn since those finger muscles are pretty weak. I also use it to "hold" the key positions (set up, parallel back, top of back swing, transition, impact, level through, and finish) for 10 seconds at a time -- like a really slow swing, which has helped improve the finer muscle strength as well as flexibility.

u/kanagawa · 1 pointr/golf

Here's the list of books I've found most useful with a brief reason why:

  • Harvey Penick's Little Red Book: Lessons and Teachings from a Lifetime in Golf, Harvey Penick -- simply the best golf advice book ever written.
  • How I Play Golf, Tiger Woods -- has the best pictures I've seen and Tiger's swing at the time of writing was the best ever.
  • Dave Pelz's Short Game Bible, Dave Pelz -- I think this is an excellent book for teaching you how to think about the short game, even though I disagree with some of the advice given.

I strongly recommend this book, which is not on the swing but on the mental aspects of the game:

  • Golf is Not a Game of Perfect, Dr. Bob Rotella

I also recommend Palmer's book about the rules of golf and Kathy Whitworth's book about her career. But, neither are about the golf swing, per se. Both are available on Kindle, IIRC. I would encourage you to read Hogan's "Five Lessons" only from a historical perspective, if at all. Much of the advice is not particularly good and the pictures and diagrams are wildly inaccurate.
u/BlechBOX · 1 pointr/golf

Keeping your head directly over the ball, keeping your head still throughout the stroke, making contact in the center if the face, and making sure my stroke did not arc on short putts. Many pros use them. You can get one on ebay for about 30 bucks and it will help you more than getting a new putter ever could. It also works great at home while watching tv. If you can't tell I highly recommend getting one. I also recommend getting a seemore putter if you really want to make all your short putts. Ernie els is a perfect example of switching to a seemore and going from the infamous 6 putt to leaning the tour in strokes gained putting over the last 4 or so weeks.

For a budget starter set with everything, I've heard good things about these.

It doesn't matter what you get when you first start, the important thing is that you start. Get anything. Be patient, practice, learn from others, ask questions, and enjoy the game. Don't get caught up in brand names for the time being or if RBZ irons are going to be better for you that MP-54s. Just get out there, have fun, and play.

u/_g_g_g_ · 3 pointsr/golf

People swear by high end travel bags but I only need one maybe once a year and none of my clubs are worth much so I got a really cheap one and I've always been happy with it.

Soft bags are easier to fit in cars and stuff and I'd recommend soft over hard. If you get a soft bag you want want of these things https://www.amazon.com/Bag-Boy-BackBone-Travel-Cover/dp/B008FW82YQ/ref=lp_3411161_1_2?s=golf&ie=UTF8&qid=1485209599&sr=1-2

Without one you risk the shafts on woods getting damaged.

u/john_mehoff · 1 pointr/golf

I got this one for $70 and love it. I would suggest picking up the Stiff Arm as well.

I love the piece of mind that the Stiff Arm gives you since it feel pretty sturdy and ensures that it takes any pressure put on the top of the bag.

u/kryonickraken · 2 pointsr/golf

I got these as a gift.

If you have never played good name brand wedges then they will be fine. I had one good Cleveland wedge in my set so didn't care for the grinds on these. I like tinkering so I did my own customs grinds, did a gun blue finish, and threw on some good grips. I love them now.

u/chordnine · 4 pointsr/golf

I was in your EXACT position about 4 months ago. I'm developing my golf game and can't yet justify a large investment. I got the Calloway Strata 13-piece set and have been very pleased with the results. 4-5 Hybrid, 6-PW irons, 3 wood and driver. Decent walking bag does the job.

$189.99, 4.3 out of 5 stars, with free shipping from Amazon.

Good luck!

If you ever want to spend more time and effort on learning how to putt, I'd recommend Dave Pelz's Putting Bible. He takes a scientific approach to the game that many people enjoy, and breaks out putting into different areas that you can work on both at home and at the course. I have a couple of training aids I use at home, but my favorite is an 8" piece of 1/2" wide PVC tube. I use it to see where my putter's face angle is at impact. If the tube goes straight when I hit it, then it's square. If it spins counter clockwise, then the face is open, and clockwise when the face is closed (for a righty). It helps me make sure the ball goes where I want it to go, and gives me clues on what may be wrong with my swing and where to look for a fix.

u/ParadeShitter · 2 pointsr/golf

if you end up w/ a soft shell definitely get a support rod for peace of mind

u/seaburden · 2 pointsr/golf

I had an enormous issue with going past parallel due to flipping my wrists the same way as you.
You're already tackling the issue with a pro but I'll share what worked for me. I tried out the Swingyde (link at the bottom) and it has made an astonishing improvement in my ball striking. Doing about 20 swings a night with this swing has really helped me make my swing much more compact and kept me from manipulating my hands and wrists at the top of my backswing.
https://www.amazon.com/Swingyde-Golf-Swing-Training-Aid/dp/B000OZI256/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1483537660&sr=8-1&keywords=swingyde
Mark Crossfield and Dan Whittaker have both done positive reviews for this training aid that you can check out on youtube.

u/intermonadicmut · 3 pointsr/golf

Dave Peltz has several really good instructional books on the short game and putting. I'm reading his putting guide right now and it's amazing. Lots of little things to change the way you think about the short game. Here's the one on putting.

Re: chipping: The hinge and hold lesson that Phil has up on youtube was really helpful to me. This one. It's a simple little thing that will get you more consistent. (I hinge my hands before I even bring the club back. Doing it on the way back is too many moving parts for me.)

u/Tallpaul07 · 1 pointr/golf

I ordered the mat below last week. Have been hitting off of it in to a net for a few days, and it's pretty fantastic. It's got 'fairway', 'rough', and a thicker fairway material that allows you to actually tee up a ball with a real tee. Highly recommended. Stays in place when you hit off of it, doesn't get green shit all over the soles of your clubs.

I travel with my clubs 2-3x a year and I use a soft bag because it's easier to transport. I don't know if you've noticed this but the hard case is cumbersome and difficult to fit into some cars because of its size. If my soft bag doesn't fit once I get to my destination I can always take my clubs out and fold up my soft bag.
To protect my clubs I wrap a towel around the heads and I use this: Club Glove Stiff Arm Travel Club Protector https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0015RZCZK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_-fsrxb1RJXTE9
On our last golf trip one of my buddies had a hard case and it wouldn't fit in the rental. He had to sit with it in the back seat with it sticking out the side of the window. Of course the hard case protects it in case of rough handlers or drops but I haven't had any bad experiences yet. Hope this helps

u/iamproph · 1 pointr/golf

When my brother started, we picked up a full set off Amazon. They aren't great, but if you hit a quality shot the ball goes where it should. As he slowly got better, we added in new clubs one at a time (first a real driver, then some nice wedges, etc).

I like the Bushnell rangefinders. They are a little pricey but it's a piece of equipment you use 18+ times a round. You could find one on ebay cheap perhaps. Something that looks like this http://www.amazon.com/Bushnell-Standard-Edition-Laser-Rangefinder/dp/B00AHPQ0RK/ref=sr_1_1?s=golf&ie=UTF8&qid=1418006852&sr=1-1

So far very pleased with that as well. Durable and padded enough that it doesn't hurt if you come in too steep.

Mine's similar, but the racks are in the middle. This one

If the one in your pic is like this one, it's not a bad price and it's highly rated.

If you're looking for a single, this one would do, but it has nearly a full star less rating.

I have owned the Sklz Quickster ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0047YQ2MK/ref=abs_brd_tag_dp?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER ),$110 and the Rukket SPDR ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00STRNQN4/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ).

I kept the SKLZ and gave away the Rukket. The SKLZ was quicker/easier to put up & take down (kinda like a "quick pole" tent), lighter, more compact.

I love it. The net has held up, it's big enough that it takes a tremendous mis-hit to miss the net, and it's weathered a few rains when I've left it out.

Down sides, it needs pretty level ground to sit still in anything over a stiff breeze. There are stake holes but I never got around to using those.

You should get a proper hitting mat. One you stand on. I tried the smaller, cheaper, "stand in front" mats, but you're always practicing hitting on a slope that way. Here's one at the MINIMUM size you should get: https://www.amazon.com/PGM3660-Emerald-Par-Golf-Mat/dp/B0058DECVC/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1499802824&sr=8-5&keywords=golf+mat

Thera-Band Flexbar, Green, Medium https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000KGOMBC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_wNZJxbHG1W0TT

This is what I used. I forget what the exercises are called but there's one or two specifically for golfers elbow. Buy this, Google the exercises and play pain free. I used to have pretty bad tendinitis, couldn't throw a baseball more once or twice, by the end of the round my elbow would be burning and I could barely get through a workout. Fast forward to after I found this thing and I'm good for a round and a range session in the same day pain free and 99% pain free workouts also. Can't recommend it enough.

u/Sundevil50 · 2 pointsr/golf

When you're at the range, hit balls with your club a couple inches behind the ball at address. This will promote that you have a forward shaft lean at impact.

Also, use one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Swingyde-Golf-Swing-Training-Aid/dp/B000OZI256

The Swingyde should ensure that you're hinging your wrists properly and then maintaining that hinge throughout the swing.

u/1lakzzz · 2 pointsr/golf

I have a setup in my garage and I use this one: https://www.amazon.com/PGM3660-Emerald-Par-Golf-Mat/dp/B0058DECVC

I'd recommend something like it - I was originally working with a little Callaway strip and couldn't stand the height difference.

u/somermike · 1 pointr/golf

I golf, climb, bike and lift 3-5 times each per week and have been fighting some combination of tendonitis, tennis elbow or golfer's elbow for the last 2 years.

If you can't just take the 6 weeks off to fix it, I recommend 3 things to keep it at bay.

  1. Get a support brace. I have one similar to this and it definitely helps keeps things at bay: https://www.amazon.com/2-Pack-Tennis-Compression-PlayActive-Sports/dp/B015I2EC9O/ref=sr_1_5?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1466821065&sr=1-5&keywords=tennis+elbow+brace

  2. Get a therabar and do the exercises. This helps more than the brace for me as it's basically antagonistic training. https://www.amazon.com/TheraBand-Resistance-Improving-Tendonitis-Intermediate/dp/B000KGOMBC/ref=sr_1_2?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1466821191&sr=1-2&keywords=therabar

  3. Ice, compression and advil after any activity.

The best option is just rest and PT / antagonistic training to get back to square 1, but if you're not willing to do that, then 1 and 3 will at least help keep things from getting worse in the short term.
u/dustinsjohnson · 1 pointr/golf

Try this for your tendonitis: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000KGOMBC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_FvglDbGT004KM

Worked for me. There's some good exercises on YouTube if you just search "flexbar"

u/heetz · 3 pointsr/golf

I also can recommend the Caddy Daddy constrictor 2 from Amazon. I've used it a few times and haven't had any issues. I make sure to use it with a backbone like this one. I take the driver head off and keep it in the driver head cover. I wrap a bath towel around the top as well just to provide a bit more cushioning.

I would like a hard cover case but I observed that it would have been difficult to transport it in a sedan sized car.

You can do something similar with one like this. There is the line in the middle and the 2 outside ones.

I found this to be a worthy investment.

But, nothing will help you more than a few lessons.

I busted out Wii sports and tried golf because I had forgotten about the game - never again.

> The mat probably cost 500

$80. Granted his does look thicker/nice.

> the screen probably cost 1k

Looks like its a few panels of some cheap building material on the front screen. The back screen isn't particularly nice either.

Whole thing probably cost a little more than $1000, but not a ton. Major factor here is how much he chose to spend on the projector and if he did the frame himself/has a guy vs if he had to find a shop to make it for him.

Buy a Flexbar and do this exercise three times a day or so. It helped me out after only a few days.

So this all prompted when my brother bought me this:

http://www.amazon.com/Swingyde-Golf-Swing-Training-Aid/dp/B000OZI256/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1347493162&sr=8-2&keywords=golf+swing

It does not work for me at all because i do not rotate my wrist during my swing.

Bushnell Tour V3

Or I know a lot of people use the Bushnell medalist, but I think the tour v3 is a newer model.

edit: I believe Dick's has it on sale for $240 with accessory pack

In his book The Impact Zone Bobby Clampett argues that blades are the true "game improvement" clubs, because they force you to hit the ball more precisely. This is somewhat controversial, but many people (like this guy) agree with him.

u/fhbrack · 3 pointsr/golf

Never did the anchored putter, but always thought that no matter what, my putting was kinda on point for as crappy as I am.

Read Chapter 1 of the The Impact Zone today at work and at the range later on had ~75% of my putts within 12" of the cup.
I never really thought about my putting stroke and thought all was good. That straight left wrist is legit, just gotta work on the pace now...

The 75% comes from putting 4 balls at a time at around 25'. Sometimes I would make one and other times I would sail the first putt past the hole, big time.

edit because wine and sale does not equal sale ;-)

Like shit. Went to the local par 3 with atleast 20 balls to lose. I sure did a fine job losing them in the water.

Bought new irons then went to the driving range Saturday and Sunday. I sucked, however I can make good contact at home and into my net.

I have this mat and I hit from the mat which is a few inches above my feet. Could that be a reason? I'm too used to hitting up on the ball that when I'm level with a ball I mishit?

u/thisthingofours · 1 pointr/golf

SKLZ Pro putting matt. It comes with for the return rails but I'm alway too lazy to get them out of the garage and I usually put it on a hard surface anyway for it to roll back. The turf has held up decent even with two cats occasionally getting a hold of it. The back is chincy plastic but they are all kind of like that.

You can get a Bushnell Tour V3 Rangefinder from Amazon for $199 right now. I just bought one and have no complaints. It does what its supposed to do.
