So, just wanted to update this thread. I decided not to purchase the keyboard or folio, just could not justify the cost.
In the end I opted for two solutions (basically to try out): a folio case and the microsoft foldable keyboard and a folio keyboard case. All three ordered from Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Google-Pixel-SmartShell-Case-Lightweight/dp/B01DF33HZ8?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00 (USD11)

So both set ups are are significantly cheaper than the USD150 cost if bought from Google.
Ironically, since purchasing from the States my laptop has needed to go in for repair, and I thought this would be a good opportunity to test out my new purchases so I could use the Pixel as a laptop replacement.
I've set the folio keyboard as the replacement and also connected a bluetooth mouse. Overall, pretty damn impressed with both the pixel and the keyboard (especially for the price). Now, lets not kid ourselves, I reckon the google folio keyboard would have been much much more better quality, but for the price that I paid for this folio, everything works generally fine.
Lets go through with the negatives first:
but the positives
As for the other combo (microsoft keyboard and folio), this also works pretty well, have not tested it so much though, but can foresee using it when travelling. Its a bit of a pain to click into the folio, and a shame that it doesn't use magnetic strength of the pixel, but probably a cost issue.
Biggest issue with these third party solutions is that they don't make use of the pixel c's magnets and self charging, or at the very least usb c.
thing is, when I do get my laptop back, don't really know how much I would use the keyboard, unless when travelling.
Yes, I totally agree the official keyboard options are going to be much much better on every level, but still can't justify the price, unless I end up using a keyboard all the time.
I do have photos of the folio keyboard and will upload these later.
Not a sleeve case, but I just picked up one of these, and the tablet section is the perfect fit.
Great for carrying the tablet (with keyboard), charger, and a few odds and ends I like having with me while out in meatspace, like a bottle of water, battery pack for my phone, kindle, etc, without being quite as bulky as a full-on backpack or something.
I know you said not a combo but this is a very good non official keyboard.

Since it is multi device, you can use it for your phone too. Really love the slot on top so you can just "dock" your device, no stand needed.
I like this one too but it doesn't have the slot on top so you need a tablet stand

The one you linked is USB, but they make a Bluetooth version, what you want is the Arc Mouse Surface Edition. I've used this for a couple years and it works great. Not the most ergonomic thing but nicer than a flat puck.
I've been looking at some on Amazon but haven't pulled the trigger on any yet. The Amazon Basics model seems like it will be a little snug based on the dimensions, but it is hard to argue with that price.
edit: Actually, I went ahead and ordered this sleeve. I like the design of a flap vs a zipper, and it's only $4 so I don't mind taking a chance. The dimensions seem like it will be fine with the keyboard.
Saw a thread the other day and decided to buy this one. A bit small but I like it so far. Very easy to connect and use. I have a macbook pro so I use the mouse for both. If you only need it for the tablet maybe you could find a cheaper one. But be careful, since I heard the device won't work with mice using older BT versions, but I could be wrong.
I really like this strap diagonally on my Pixel C: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00SH2SY7O
Please bear with me - I'm not a total Neanderthal, but I'm far from an expert about this stuff. 192.168.0.1 is telling me B/G/N mixed, 20/40 MHz, channel is set to auto. I have this router which says it has 2x3 MIMO and does not appear to be dual band. Does this help? What else should I look for?
I used this sleeve for over a month (10 inch variant). Its really durable, nice and the pocket lets me keep an adapter, stylus, and usb drive and it adds no thickness. 5/5 stars

I didn't buy the keyboard purely for economical reasons. I have heard some complaints that it scratches the screen easily so get a screen protector if you do. My only problem with it is no backlit keys. I really need that. Otherwise, I will probably get it when the price drops eventually. Or just get the next Nexus/Pixel tablet when it comes out this fall. For now I just bought a cheap BT backlit keyboard off Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NG8EJOG/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
