Mike grell has an amazing run on green arrow in the 80s. this is the first volume it’s very frank Miller-esque not in writing style but in mood. It’s serious and grounded. I love it and with the exception of the Smith/Winnick run it’s seen as easily the best green arrow run.

I recommend you start with Green Arrow: Year One. Then there is the GL/GA team up series from the 1970's which, although dated, really gave Ollie that liberal crusader personality. Longbow Hunters is the beginning of the 1980's dark period where he was pushed to his boiling point with beautiful painted art. Kevin Smith's run brought him back to life and wiped his memories, so it's a fun fresh start if you want something more modern. Lastly, the Lemire run from the new 52 series is the most worthy place to start for the current continuity of Green Arrow.

Is this the collection you're referring to? If so, I'd say it is a good start. The series got a bit of fame due to the issues it tackled.

Like /u/cyon921 said, the New 52 #17 is when it starts not sucking. [Here's the tpb] (http://www.amazon.com/Green-Arrow-Vol-Machine-Graphic/dp/1401246907/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1409626499&sr=8-1&keywords=green+arrow+kill+machine). In October the Volume 5 tpb comes out, and with issue #35 (also October) there'll be a new creative team, if want to jump onto the ongoing series.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the Green Arrow & Black Canary series. That was a good run too!

Oh I am not talking about rebirth I am talking about homecoming and the hunt for the red dragon I guess I should have made that clear in my post. But I have heard good things about rebirth though so I do plan on picking up that as well.

Edit: My bad misunderstood your post

I completely agree with MisterBigStuff, I think the perfect starting point for Green Arrow could be The Outsiders War series. The art is just phenomenal & absolutely fantastically written to match. It's one of those comics that will keep you coming back, and reading to find out what is going to happen next unable to put the book down. Definitely a highlight of the Arrow series!

I've seen them sold as one trade, for a family normal price. Here it is, I was really annoyed when I saw it, I would have bought that if I'd have known instead of hunting round for an old copy of Sound of Violence, which is now out of print.
