I know I'm a bit late, but I'll answer anyway if you don't mind.
Wall of text ahead. Please, read only if you are really interested...
What I usually recommend when someone ask for advice about gaming headsets is: Gaming headset are crap 99% of the time. They provide very poor sound quality, and any good headphone (literally, even 40$ ones) will sound far better than expensive 300$ headsets. The question is not if headphones are better than headset (the answer is “Hell, YEAH”). The question is, are they better for you?
What are you planning to use your headphones for? Just for gaming, or for gaming and music listening?
If the answer is “just for gaming”, then ask yourself if a Hifi headphone is what you need. Usually games don’t really need high quality headphones, since they provide low quality sound, and you will be more concentrated gaming than listening. In that scenario, everything will serve you, and gaming headsets have the advantage of the integrated microphone.
So, if you want something good for gaming, and just for gaming, with integrated microphone, then the only two headsets with good enough quality sound (aka don’t suck) are:
HyperX Cloud (70$)
Sennheiser G4me One (170$)
Both are good choices. Or go with any fancy RGB headset you find (Logitech, Razer, Corsair, Steelseries, etc), you will most probably don’t notice the difference while gaming.
BUT, if you plan to use them for music listening besides gaming, then keep reading.
About the microphone problem
Hifi headphones for gaming have the disadvantage of having to deal with the micro thing. None of them have microphone incorporated, and you must find a workaround to the problem. Options available are:
1- Use a desk microphone like this
2- Some headphones have detachable cable. If the connector is a 3.5mm jack, you can substitute the cable with this V-Moda micro. That way you can have a microphone attached and still use a single cable. Main problem is that you must use this cable, no matter what, and if you end buying an amplifier, you can no longer use this microphone, as amplifiers don’t have micro input. Also, not all headphones are compatible, as not all use 3.5mm jack connections (Audio-technica and Sennheiser headphones are NOT compatible with V-moda Boom micro, cause they use 2.5mm jack)
3- use a modmic like this one or if your budget is tight, something like this.
The first option requires desk space and it’s expensive. The second one is not compatible with every headphone, and forces you to use this cable. The third one are detachable micro, with an extra cable you’ll have to deal with. Any of them are a nuisance. Any solution is annoying. All of them are an extra expense that must be accounted. If micro is a must and you are not willing to bother with this solutions, please, go back to HyperX Cloud or G4me One.
Ok, so, you really want some damn good headphones, that also can be used for gaming! Keep reading, please (are you bored yet?).
You can choose Closed back headphones (the classic ones you have already used. Closed back models offer good isolation and do not leak sound. This is your choice when there are people around you, or you want isolation from noisy a environment.) or Open Back headphones (Open back models offer next to no isolation and will leak sound -and allow you to hear what happens around you-, but they are the best sounding models). Open headphones achieve the best sound, soundstage (feeling that sound is coming from around you) and imaging (ability to locate the source of one sound).
If you are here because you want to get a replacement for a gaming headset, I would recommend you Open back, but since they don’t isolate, you must choose. If isolation is required, get closed back, if that’s not a concern, go open.
Some closed back cans:
Audio-Technica ATH-M40x. 100$. Balanced headphones, very good feedback from lots of people. Typical entry level headphones to the rabbit hole.
Sennheiser HD 598Cs. 125$. Balanced, very very detailed, great instrumental separation. Comfortable as hell, very recommended.
Beyerdynamic DT770. 160$. V-shaped signature (lots of bass and lots of treble). Amazing soundstage (for a closed headphone). Great for explosions, movies, and rock. Treble can be harsh if you are sensible. Get the 32 ohm version, as the 80 (may) and 250 (do) need an amplifier to work properly.
Those are some examples of entry-mid level of closed cans. There are lots more, depending of your budget!
As for open cans:
Superlux HD668b. 40$. Those are THE CANS. The best quality for low budget you can get. Hands down. Great soundstage, Bass light. They are not too comfortable, but pads can be changed for a deluxe comfort (extra expense). You are not getting anything better at this price. For gaming in a budget, this are the headphones you were looking for.
Philips SHP9500. 80$. Mid-forward signature. Good soundstage, great comfort. Very detailed. Another amazing quality for the budget headphone. Due its popularity, they’re getting harder and harder to get.
Sennheiser HD 598 SR. 170$. Very similar to the HD 598Cs, but with open back. Wider soundstage, a little less bass. Very balanced headphones. Super-duper comfortable. Great for long gaming sessions.
Philips Fidelio X2. 250$. V-shaped signature. Those are in another league. Build quality is just.. OMG. Extreme soundstage and imaging. More comfortable than the HD 598. Bass is BOOOOOM!!!. A little pricey, and can be somewhat fatiguing to listen if you are treble sensible, due to high treble.
Well, that’s all. I have selected only headphones that don’t need an amplifier. Now is your turn to research, watch some Youtube videos, read some reviews, and give them a try.
All this headphones are GOOD. No trash here, and all them will make you open your eyes when listening your music if you are coming from standard headsets. You will notice sounds, instruments, that you never realized they were there, even if you had listened this song a thousand times before. Try them, and be amazed.
Welcome to the rabbit hole.
I have recently purchased the AirPods (2nd gen), AirPods Pro, and PXC 550. I am an IT guy and an Apple nerd who listen to podcasts and a wide genre of music, but am not an audiophile by any stretch. I did some comparison reading and reviews on rtings.com as well as other sites before purchasing so I had an idea of the AirPods Pro and Sennhesiser PXC 550 before purchase.
AirPods Pro
To me the AirPods sounded just like their wired version, I couldn't notice a difference. They did hurt my ears (still haven't figured out why as the size comparison between these and the wired versions is near identical - maybe the extra weight). I bought the AirPod Pros for $250 and when I excitedly received them in the mail I stuck them in and they sounded REALLY good! Maybe it's the shape of my inner ear or something but after 10 minutes I could definitely tell they were in my ears. I swapped out tips for all of the various sizes and found the large tips felt the most comfortable but I could still definitely tell there was something in my ears - not like other reviews I have read where folks said they forgot they were in. I found the ANC on these to be fantastic and the control scheme with the "sticks" and setup/usage to be on-par with an Apple product. If you're already in the Apple ecosystem these work wonderfully well when moving between devices (like running with them on my Apple Watch). The portability of these things is a huge selling point as I can fit them in the coin pocket of my jeans! I did however, end up returning them (sadly) though as they made my head feel "muddy" - I can't think of a better word atm, YMMV greatly on this though.
Sennheser PXC 550
Next up, the Senn PXC 550 which I found on Amazon for $180 (as previous commenters have mentioned there's a v2 just released). These are extremely comfortable headphones with amazing battery life. The ANC though is about half as good as the AP Pros, even when turned up to high (it has two levels), I did notice the same "pressurized" feeling as the AirPods Pro - I initially thought it was just the AirPods but now realize it's the ANC at work. I didn't find the AirPods Pro venting to be helpful to me, but I'm just one person. As a glasses wearer I find them to be very comfortable and not press into my temples and I can wear these things for hours. I've tested them with music, podcasts, and phone calls and everything sounds great. I haven't taken them out of my house yet but I suspect walking around with them and traveling would be not nearly as much fun or enjoyable since I can't fit them in my pocket.
Even with the slight bit of pain from the AirPod Pros I am reconsidering purchasing them again - they're that good! I hope this helps with your decision, both of these headphones are great but have different selling points. Let me know if you need more detail on a different aspect of either of these two models.
Hey kutekarma,

So what I ended up going with in the end was the HD-58x's. But I also now have a Schiit Stack. (Modi/Magni)

I started at a pair of HIFIMAN HE-400I Over Ear Full-size Planar Magnetic Headphones. These were bulky and uncomfortable to me. The sound quality was great, but clamping force was a bit high in my opinion. I still have them, but don't use them anymore.
I then switched to the HD-58x's. And I really like them. Very comfortable, very clean sound, I would say fairly neutral sounding, so if that's not your thing, these might not be for you, but don't be fooled, a little bit of EQ adjusting and they still perform pretty well on either side of the spectrum. (bass or highs)
They are indeed very open and they do bleed sound, but it's not as bad as I thought it would be. My stream hasn't suffered due to it, and people on comms (discord, etc.) do not notice it at all, and I mainly use voice activated as well, it doesn't pick it up either.
Really the only thing that I can complain about is just knowing that they are so open, but that's just my ocd kicking in.

On to the DAC/AMP that I went with and my setup now. I have it connected like this Internal Sound Blaster Z -> (out via SP-DIF) -> Modi (DAC) -> Magni (AMP) -> Headphones. With this setup, I'm not actually using the DAC functionality of the Modi, I tried it, and it worked just fine, however, I do prefer the Sound Blaster's "virtual" surround sound. Many audiophiles will point out that this is simply a "gimmick" and/or "trickery", but I personally like it, it does seem to help when playing certain games, and I like what it does with the EQ in some regards to music, it's also easy to turn off/on with the Logitech control panel.

I also really like this because if your speakers also have an on/off switch easily accessible, as mine do, it's so much easier to switch between headphones and speakers, without using windows to do it, and/or having a goofy delay when doing so, which I got when using the Logitech control panel to do so. The Stack does still take a couple seconds to turn on, but the ease of switching them on and pressing the power button on my speakers far outweighs having to do this through the Logitech control panel, and the delay of the power on of the stack isn't even noticeable by the time I grab my headphones and put them on, the sound is playing in them.

Overall, I probably spent too much on what I am using it all for, but I really like how it's setup now, and the sound quality and comfort definitely improved over the crap logitech gaming set I was using, I also now have more options with having a DAC/AMP if/when I decide to switch or replace.
What kind of games do you play? For competitive FPS where positional queues and imaging are important, I'd go with a used HD700 or even HD800. Will be hard to find on a $400 budget, but maybe you'll find the 700.
For more single player or immersive games, you have a lot of different options. This will come down to more of what sort of sound signature you like (bass, mid, treble forward?). I would put the HD600 series here moreso than in the competitive gaming realm.
Honestly, once you get above where you're at now, the diminishing returns become pretty apparent. I don't notice enough difference when gaming between my ATH-AD700x and my HD800 that would make me want to spend the difference for gaming alone. Sure the soundstage on the 800s is wider and the imaging slightly better, but it doesn't translate to that much of an edge in game. The 700x (or 598 in your case) is already leaps and bounds ahead of whatever other fart cannons most other people are using. I'd honestly just stick with what you've got.
As stated in other replies, get a desktop mic, a boom mic, a modmic, or any sort of wired clipon. Most/all gaming headsets are not great, or just OK, and you will be sacrificing sound quality and soundstage going to one of those from your 598s. This mic is $10 and actually sounds pretty darn good. I clip it on to whatever pair of headphones I pick up (depending on the game).
What are you driving your 598s with? You may see some improvement investing in your source.
Save your money and don't buy super fancy cables expecting much difference. Good solid cables shouldn't cost more than $50. It might be an unpopular opinion, but I don't think they drastically change the sound signature, at least to my ears.
To answer your question about straight vs Angled. It's just personal preference. I like angled better because the weight gets dispersed around your whole ear instead of just pulling down. also makes them more secure.

I will list some options that i would consider:

Pixel Phone to Bluetooth Cable AptX to IEM Cable for 2Pin/MMCX for 38$
Pros: Easy way to use, cheap
Cons: Soundquality is not the best possible, The bluetooth cable need to be charged

Pixel Phone to Bluetooth AptX DAC/AMP to IEM via AUX Cable Fiio Bluetooth DAC/AMP for 35$
Pros: Better Soundquality, some Functions like EQ, Volume Control
Cons: Cost/Soundquality ratio is not very good, needs to be charged, one more thing to carry around

Pixel Phone to USB C Connector Cable with included DAC to IEM Very good Cable for 80$
Pros: Easy to use Plug & Play, Better Soundquality than Bluetooth
Cons: Cost/Soundquality ratio is OK with DAC, is wired to the phone

Small Hi-Res DAP to IEM via AUX Cable Shanling M0 with Clip for 112$
Pros: Almost best possible Soundquality, Easy to use and will not drain the Battery of your Phone/ Will still work if the Phone is dead, Cost/Soundquality ratio is amazing, up to 512 GB Storage, weights almost nothing
Cons: One more thing to carry, is still wired, no spotify or other streaming services

My advice is the Digital Audio Player for the best sound Quality, maybe a cheap adapter for the Pixel. Link to USB C to AUX Adapter

I hope this helps in making your decision. feel free to ask me about anything that you might consider buying or any other stuff. :)
EDIT: I am dumb I just saw you wanted closed back.

open back or closed back? Open back is better for gaming but others will be able to hear what you hear. If it doesn't matter then open back for gaming.

Basically I am no expert as I am just getting into the DAC/AMP world but from my research and this subreddits wiki and other sources, it seems better to put your money into better headphones and then into a better DAC/AMP. I would look for a used pair of headphones from
/r/AVexchange or /r/hardwareswap if you are wanting something better, I picked up a pair of HE4xx for 110 shipped.

Just my two cents. I could be wrong and anyone please feel free to correct me as I am still learning all this.
I recommend looking for adequate padding in whatever you get. I have found some sub$100 wireless headphones that might work but I've never tried them. Sorry everything's in us dollars.
Several good options on Amazon DE - there is a button to change language to english on the website.
Before we go into the options. Soundstage and imagining can help you determine where a gunshot or footsteps come from in an FPS for instance, or if there is something behind you in an RPG(Skyrim, Fallout(a mix of rpg and shooter) and in MMORPGs you can hear if the boss drops shit behind you. This is primarily regarding gaming, getting into how soundstage and imagine works in music would be too long to explain. But this is the basics.

Open back: Better soundstage and Imaging - Mostly good for FPS games(but you can hear people in the room around you)
AKG K712 - I used to both listen to music and game with these, and they are a good value
Beyerdynamic DT 880 - I use this one for all genres, though it might be too analytical for you
Audio Technica ATH-AD700x - These are absolutely amazing for FPS games, but you might find them a bit boring in the music department coming from the A40s

Closed back : These close you off from the outside world, imaging isn't as good, but you won't hear people around you as much IRL
Beyerdynamic Custon One Pro - They have a rather bass heavy sound signature, but the highs are clear and can be useful(depending on the game you play.
Sennheiser Momentum 2 Over-Ear(cabled version) - They aren't the best for shooters, but all other kinds of games they can do just fine. They are 56% off right now.
Audio Technica ATH-MSR7BK - These are highly regarded for gaming and are also an amazing all rounder for music
Audio Technica ATH-A700x - These are the closed back version of the AD700x they are good for gaming and a good all rounder, because of their closed back they have a warmer sound than the AD700x which is rather cold.
If you like Sennheiser then the 660S are pretty good. Only 150ohms so they are much easier to drive. (compared to other 600 series that are 250ohm)
660S
I would still recommend getting a dac/amp because that will usually make a difference over a direct plug to the motherboard. Something cheap like the FX Audio Dac X6 would be a good starting point.
The Beyerdynamic DT1990 get very good reviews for open sound stage:
DT1990
These are all around the $500 mark and will be a huge improvement over your old ones. These are also open back.
Im sure others can list some other options.

Obviously, these are all examples of headphones that work with the VModa BoomPro. The BoomPro is a modular mic that offers good voice characteristics at a very reasonable price in an easy-to-use single-cord cord solution. The freedom of using a modular mic is that you are open to choose better options for the headphones themselves, which you're are also free to use on the go, if you choose, by simply detaching the mic. As well, it's easily and cheaply replaceable should an unfortunate accident happen.
If you would like to consider using a desktop mic, then your options for good headphones increase dramatically.
A couple of videos for general research and discussion:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63BxrNuXnYg
these, and these, and these, and these and these and these are probably the only your budget options, with the best being the last 3. The stuff I listed usually applies for people below 100 dollars but I am not aware of any great options apart maybe from the hd 4.50 that are between those prices. I think the best sounding headphones are hd 4.40, atleast according to people at r/headphones and reviewers, but their earcups, if you have above average ears, will be over ear and there won't be much comfort. The other pick would be the wh ch700n, I actually tested those and really liked them, they were a nice budget pair. If you have any chance to try them out yourself, I highly suggest you to do so
Idk if you'd be willing too, but many people say it is better to get a good pair of headphones, and then a good microphone. A lot of the companies that of the gaming headsets are nowhere near the quality you would have gotten if you would have bought each independently.
For your budget, I would suggest the CAD U37 for the microphone. It's a USB microphone, so you won't need a Phantom Power connection, and it comes with a stand. For headphones, Sennheiser HD series are noted for the comfortability, as well as their isolation, so I believe that the HD 558 would be a good recommendation.
And if you're not a fan of having a separate placement of a microphone on your desk, you can always get one of those clip-on microphones. Good luck!
I owned both the M50x and the HD 599 and eventually ended up selling my m50x's due to the 599 being more comfortable for wearing long periods of time.
On amazon the HD599 run for $150. They are a slightly bass boosted version of the HD598 and are O]open back (unlike the closed back m50x) so you get that sound stage your looking for where it seems like the sound is coming from around you vs from the actual headphone.. Ive used them for PUBG and are great for sound whoring same for COD:MW! Also a huge edm guy and these things are really nice for house, dubstep anything really even rock or hip hop, The bass is definitely there.
I had these Game One's before going with the Sennheiser Jubilee 58x and Modmic 4 setup. The 58x is easy to drive, and sound amazing! I also had the Philips SHP9500, and it did not sound nearly as good as the 58x, but it's so much cheaper that it's well within your budget. If listening to music is important to you, then I believe the separate mic setup would be a much better fit. Otherwise, I highly recommend the Game One's.
They have a black version too, along with the cream version. I have the black 598 SE myself as I'm not a fan of the cream color. The 599 is the upgrade to the 598 and are said to have even better sound. They're super comfortable and can be worn for 10+ hours with no problems. They're not really 'made from plastic', they just have some plastic on it, like the vast majority of headphones. I can think of very few headphones that don't have plastic on some part of them. I don't know what other material you expect them to be made out of but they're lightweight and comfortable and most importantly, super durable and the highest quality open-back headphones you'll get for under $200 so that's what should matter most about the construction. If you only care about how it looks, then you're going to be disappointed and end up with shitty headphones. There are plenty of 'good looking' headphones that sound like garbage.
It sounds like you're looking for the exact same thing as me, haha. These days, I'm listening to a lot of k-pop, so there tends to be a solid emphasis on bass as well as vocal lines. These V-MODA headphones have the right marriage between the two, in my opinion. It's not overwhelming bass (unless you use an EQ to intentionally get that effect), and it's not overly harsh in terms of the vocal clarity like I've experienced on some other headphones. So if you're trying to grab something cheaper, then the Crossfade Wireless might be a good pick for you. The Gunmetal Black is still only $129, and you can grab some XL pads like these unofficial ones or the official V-MODA ones
Might be worth looking into for you. And if you don't like it, you can always return it and continue the search. The Crossfade 2 Wireless Codex that I have is quite a bit more expensive, but I think that the original Crossfade Wireless, even at $129 is a great choice for what you're trying to get.
A good beginner setup for EDM/Metal listeners who play a good amount of video games? I'd readily suggest the closed-back Cooler Master MH751 for the low price of $60 (it's essentially a rebranded Takstar Pro 82v2 w/o bass ports and w/a detachable mic) --
Coolermaster MH751 on Amazon

The MH751 doesn't really require amping, but a nice starter dac/amp (for both gaming/music) would be the Sound BlasterX G6 for $158 --
Creative Sound Blasterx G6 on Amazon

Total cost: $60+$158 = $218.
If you can spend a bit more, replace the G6 DAC/AMP with the Topping DX3 Pro (if music is a strong top priority) for $220: $62 over the price of the G6, for a total of $60 + $220 = $280.

Hope this helps!
You really should look into something with active noise cancelling. ANC was literally invented because a guy from Sony got stressed out over airplane noise.
The M50 is fine, but it's not really very isolating.
The $200 budget does limit your choices a little, but a pair of Bose Quietcomfort 25 might be just the ticket. A lot (a LOT) of people buy those for ANC and good (if not kick-ass) sound.
The QC25 should be in the $170-ish price point. You can Bluetooth-ify them for $30-ish - https://www.amazon.com/FiiO-uBTR-Bluetooth-Wireless-Receiver/dp/B07D8K76F4 but personally I'd pay the $69 for a FiiO BTR3 which is just outstanding in my book (have one, use one daily, love it to bits).
I love Sony headphones, they work really well and sound great. My brother owns a pair of hyperx cloud headphones and prefer to play games with the Sony headphones over his hyperx. If you want to spend a bit (300$) more get the WH1000XM3:
https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Noise-Cancelling-Headphones-WH1000XM3/dp/B07G4MNFS1
I absolutely love these and I sort of fell in love with noise canceling after I got them! They are very versatile (this is the best selling point imo) and sound quality is really good. I haven't had a problem with the fit/feel but it might be a change from you're hyprex. It is also great to have if you travel and don't want to listen to train/plane noises. It even cuts the AC to more or less nothing.
People also like this slightly cheaper (200$) model, but I have no personal experience with it:
https://www.sony.com/electronics/headband-headphones/wh-xb900n
If you don't mind a single cable, I love the MEE M6B buds. Fantastic battery life (8+ hours), bluetooth 5.0, and sound great. IPX5. $30 USD
If you don't mind using a set of cables, You can use any 3.5mm headphone with the Fiio BTR3 bluetooth receiver. Built in AK Dac, Can be used as a USB Dac from any computer, 11 hours of playtime (can use while charging), and works with any normal impedance headphone (i can use with 300 ohm headphones, but they aren't that loud.). $70 USD.
There is a less expensive model uBTR that comes without the DAC/9 hours battery life. $30 USD.

I haven't had too much experience in this price range, but these products I own myself and use them both for difference reasons. Good luck hunting!
yeah I have to agree with u/kfm946 here.

When it comes to gaming headphones or headsets there's 3 different scenarios:

A list of decent headphones with a 3.5 mm jack (that is not proprietarily recessed or anything):

The newer Hyper X Cloud alpha where you can detach the mic and the cable and the Coolermaster MH752/MH751 are just pre-packaged solutions to what people already found out some time ago.
But either of these will give you: excellent comfort, good build quality, a removable cable and a removable microphone for 75 or 100 $.
I love this one but can not find charging dock Bluetooth headphones.
I have an earlier version os these. The photo looks like "C" connector, but not a clue
https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-PXC-550-Wireless-Cancelling/dp/B01E3XLNA0/ref=sr_1_16?crid=24IOLBEL8P1FB&keywords=overtheear+headphones+bluetooth&qid=1574430537&sprefix=overtheear+%2Caps%2C188&sr=8-16
Battery life is a critical aspect to look for.
I posted this over on /r/Parkinsons Best to have the Aware in Care Kit, Medications, and be ready for those emergencies. A friend broke her wrist, once healed did a 200-mile hike in Spain. Back home, tripped and shattered her shoulder! Ouch.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Parkinsons/comments/deljfx/best_outcome_for_hospitalization/
Fair enough. At $179, the HE400i is a great deal. At $319 (or $259 refurbished) the HD650 is less competitive. Of course there are deals to be had in r/AVexchange as buyer and seller for those interested in auditioning.

I don't have an opinion on the venerable E10K or the shiny new K3 having tried neither, but FiiO makes comparison easy. As a long-time happy FiiO customer, the only thing which would give me pause before buying the $110 K3 is the $100 Q1 Mark II.
Sennheiser Game Ones, they are on Amazon for $130.16 right now, and there is a lot of value there. I own them and they have great sound for the price, they are comfortable , and have a good sounding mic. Here is a link: https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-Game-ONE-Gaming-Headset/dp/B00KK8ZLEC/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=sennheiser+game+one&qid=1569683589&s=gateway&sr=8-3
There are some headsets made by brands that do proper headphones like sennheiser, beyerdynamic and audiotechnica. You should maybe take a look at the Sennheiser game one's or game zero's if not these models maybe you should check out the beyerdynamic custom game headset. If you somehow don't find something you like from brands like these and want a normal gaming branded headset you could get something from hyperx. Hyperx headsets tend to be better than the other gaming brands and usually are just rebranded models from other companys. For example their cloud model is a rebranded takstar pro 80 headphone. Also, you could buy a cable with a microphone and just replace the stock cable from headphones that have a removable cable.

Edit: The sennheiser PC37X made in collaboration with Massdrop might also be a good option for you.
i'am no headphones enthusiast at all but for a gaming headset these are what i would recommend:
Sennheiser PC37X: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spktoWVAlTU
Logitech G PRO X: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8nBLX9rDWI&t=215s

or you could buy the 58x jubilee and install a modmic on it, and get a better sound quality from more on the professional side headphones and a much better mic quality: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZtGFdurGmU

and here is a similar headset to the Senhheiser PC37X : https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-GAME-ONE-Gaming-Headset/dp/B00KK8ZLEC/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=sennheiser+game+one&qid=1562796435&s=gateway&sr=8-3
I've been having the same debate as you for a while. I think the answer is to get both (if you can) because they're built for different things, but do them excellently.
What I did was buy the PC37X, because I'll mainly be using them for gaming, and since they provide a more open soundstage, more base and have an excellent mic, I think that they'll work better for me.
I'm going to try pairing them with a cheap DAC/amp, I'm going to be testing them this week with either the Fiio BTR3 connected through USB C (which I can also use wirelessly with my iPhone over Bluetooth and other headphones). So they're convenient but may be lacking a bit in power.
I'll also be testing it with Syba Sonic's UBS 24 bit 96 KHz DAC/Amp (For under $40 it's hard to argue with)
I also considered the Sennheiser GSX 1000 Gaming Audio Amplifier, but will only test it out if the other options don't perform well for me.
I'll let you know how it goes. What option did you end up going with u/HasHooves?
In general. M40X's being called shit is pretty common, but calling SHP9500 bad is more of a hot take. As someone who spent a good minute exploring the budget range (like <200), I think they're pretty mediocre.
Creative Aurvana Live! (CAL!) is more like a semi-close/semi-open than anything actually labeled as a semi-open/semi-closed. They have no isolation whatsoever. Their bass can seem kind of bloated to more refined and way more expensive bass head options like TR-X00's, but they're criminally overpriced for how much you pay.
Another option I'm seriously shocked this subplebbit doesn't circle jerk are the Koss KSC75/Porta Pro's. They sound absolutely insane for how much they cost. I even preferred the KSC75's to the HD650's. The KSC75's are pretty neutral but still have a tight bass and decent mid/upper ranges. Porta Pro's are bassier and looser, and sound a lot more laid back, but still have insane resolution. They both do. They both also have a significantly wider sound stage than any of the HD6x0 options.
My daily driver is a KSC75 on a Porta Pro headband withthis as a cushion.
It's super comfortable.
edit: formatting nub
Nee Bee Tips are great. They're cheap enough to get both and try them out.
There are SpinFit Tips as well as Final Audio E series Tips. They're all pretty good.
One option is to get something like the Fiio BTR3 https://smile.amazon.com/FiiO-BTR3-Bluetooth-Receiver-Portable/dp/B07FVN14FH and then get whatever headphones you like. :) If you go this route, you'll ideally want headphones with a short or easily replaceable cord.
The V-moda Wireless used to be a lot more expensive but dropped in price once the Vmoda Wireless 2 hit the scene. They don't go for an audiophile sound, but they are really engaging to listen to when you embrace how "fun" the sound signature is. I bought them for my wife last month and I now steal them when I want a good, V-shaped (emphasized bass and treble) over ear headphone. AND they don't have ANC, as per your specifications.

I really like Vmoda Crossfades, they're a little darker sounding, more punch to bass, but the construction is much more durable than the AT's: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015R7AGHC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Hey OP, I can recommend These Headphones with This Mic. This is a great setup for right under your price tag, I think you'd be quite happy. Any questions let me know.
Thank you for your opinion. Is there a difference between audio headphones and gaming ones in terms of diferent soundstage or better suitability for either one of the medium? I'm mainly interested in gaming so would for example BD C1Pro that you recommended fit gaming or just a music?
Where do you live? They are 93 us dollars on amazon. Also they are on ebay for just as cheap. Not sure where you live but maybe this would help!! I hope you find some sweet headphones!!
ebay hd 4.40
amazon bt 4.40
Have you considered bluetooth? FiiO's BTR3 is LDAC compatible and (in the best circumstances) the compression should be unnoticeable and the sound should be as good as any other wired DAC at this price. Plus you can use it wired for your phone and PC. The Mi8 came out with android 8, so it will be LDAC capable. £55 worth taking a look-

I listen to the same genres as you, I'm currently on the MEE Audio M6 pro 2nd gens and I love them. Well balanced when you're in any public space, and when they have a good seal in your ear, theres almost zero sound leakage.

it’s like $20 over your budget , and i’m not sure if you’d like the cup style. i almost bought a pair myself but didn’t like how small the ear cups look. ik a lot of people have switched off the M50x wave but i’m planning on buying myself these or going a little over budget and getting these. hope this helps
for around 200
Sennheiser HD599, AKG K701, Fidileo X2, dt990 600ohm would be good options. The AKG and Beyer will need an Amp.
This is pretty good option at 200 dollars

I'd recommend either the Sennheiser 598 and get yourself a modmic,
or go simple and just get a Sennheiser GAME ONE with a mic already built in.
My friends really enjoy the game one's since the mic mutes itself when it's flipped upwards.
Dude you're a god thank you so much for all of the advice. You totally sold me with the coworker line haha.
Are headphones something getting "Like New" is worth doing? They're $40 cheaper sold by OceansideSales. Downside is obviously not new and I'd get them the 3 days later cause of backorder. (not a big deal)

This is what I ended up getting, and it's pretty great. I almost always listen to music on my phone, which is doesn't have a 3.5mm port (I really dislike this trend), and the uBTR is a good way to still use my wired headphones.

Sounds like the Beats left a dry taste in your mouth.
If your looking at the 350$ price range why not go for the Sony WH1000XM3.
If you can get a good deal on them they are better sounding def last you longer.

Onboard PC audio is fine, but the $150 Sennheiser GSX 1000 is an end game DAC/MIXAMP/audio controller for gaming headsets and really enhances the experience.
My buddy is talking to me about them and said that the Sennheiser is good for vocals. Mid and high range frequency. Is that good for gaming / music?
Between the Beyerdynamic 770, 990, 598 Cs, 599 SE, which one would you choose?
I can also get these
The KSC75 are more of an on ear but sound amazing for $15 imo.

beyerdynamic Custom One Pro Plus Headphones with Accessory Kit and Remote Microphone Cable, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PK2LJ4E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_bvpVCbN4KC7WM
Also when browsing Amazon, I came across various cheap DAC's like this: https://www.amazon.com/FX-Audio-Optical-Coaxial-Amplifier/dp/B072JJT7SF
Any good? I mean it's externally powered.
I have seen those around a little, they look good from what I can tell. First generation or second generation though? From the description, the 2nd gen is said to just have "better sound and build quality", and while there's not many reviews on the 2nd gen, they seem to have come out just recently.
Thanks for the reply. I went ahead and ordered these tips from amazon since they were cheap and had good reviews. Will these work or should I cancel?
Yup, Dekoni are nice foam tips - be sure to get the larger diameter Mercury Series (4.9mm) tips.
Another option are the "New bee" foam tips which work well.
And premium price foam tips (but to me aren't any better subjectively than the others) are the Comply 500 series.
Koss KSC-75. Nothing sounds finer or is more comfortable in the sub $20 range.

Sennheiser HD 599 SE is $99 on Amazon.

But considering what you said you listen in the comments X2HR is probably better.
I think you might have to go up to the $80 mark and look at the Takstar Pro 82, or the Coolermaster MH-751, which is the same headphone with a removable microphone and no bass slider.
Most of the recommended headphones under that price are either warm toned/bassy, or are semi-open, like the Superlux HD668b.
I got ya: V-MODA Crossfade Wireless @ Amazon for $185 new, $144 used on avg. Let me know how you like em, I've been thinking of grabbing a pair myself once things level out.
googled your earbuds and there is a wireless version of them for roughly 40 bucks

since you've got a little budget left, I have a cheap (ish) amp that cost $60. Really solid and a decent pair for the 58x. It's up to you though, your mobo should be fine but I'm just letting you know!
Koss KSC75s. Among the best sound in your price range. Absolutely the best in the price range that isn't an in ear. The cord isn't particularly strong but it often isn't the point of failure when it gets caught on something, the part that goes around your ear will pop off and can be easily snapped back in.

I'd recommend the Beyerdynamic Custom Game.
I also recommend the ES100. It is double your state budget though. The FiiO BTR3 is a bit cheaper and will be more than sufficient for the IEMs you mentioned.

If you can afford to go a bit higher, I'd recc audiotechnica ath-m40x.
In term of sound quality, you'll get a lot more bang for you buck if you go chi-fi while being in the price range

You can get one of the many bluetooth dongles for your sennheiser. You aren't going to get open back over ear bluetooth headphones sadly. Feel free to ignore the link and research yourself. Actually if you have the time I recomend going down to your local audio store ask for bluetooth receivers to try out.
You could take a look at HD 599 SE, there was a sale ($130 instead of $200) on Amazon but it ended yesterday. You would have to wait for the price to drop again, possibly $100 on Black Friday.

I have been looking at the DT 770 Pros for a bit now. But, I doubt my computer can drive 80 Ohms. Any recommendations on DACs?
