Update: I have since ordered another bag of the cocoa flavor in 8oz size. I know that kona is generally not recommended and that people respond differently to different vendors, I just wanted to share my experience. The cocoa flavor is not bad, I wouldn't say that it makes it taste better but it definitely doesn't make it taste worse. The problem with kona is that they don't really provide a "strain" but I can say that overall this is a pretty balanced Kava--very relaxing but not too "heady". As compared to my KWK Loa Waka that I have tried, the feeling of this is much more pleasurable. KWK Loa left me pretty sick feeling and in a weird sort of emotionless mood. I found it very hard to keep down. Just wanted to share this with anyone who has seen kona on Amazon but has been unsure about purchasing. I would reccommend as a good beginner kava. I am transitioning to medium grind now and just placed an order with Cactus, so I'll see how it compares.

The kava by Nature's Answer is good. If you don't mind a supplement with other things besides kava, give Securus a try. I used to take it before I was on any medication and it worked just about as well as medications for anxiety. It's definitely worth a try if you have anxiety. You can also try Kalm with Kava's concentrate. There's barely any kava taste and it's so much easier to consume than regular kava.

Did you buy it as is or in a bag? It looks a lot like this kava product https://www.amazon.com/Kava-Extract-Powder-Kavalactones-NON-GMO/dp/B018K0SDKU/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1535768484&sr=8-1-spons&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=kava+extract&psc=1, which I’ve tried. If it is the same product, it worked really well and I didn’t have any bad side effects from taking the extract. Usually I would put it in the blender with a little milk and ice cream, which made it easy to consume. You can also just stir it in some milk

It's something you can get at any Asian market and many grocery stores, but here is an example https://www.amazon.com/Chao-Thai-Coconut-Powder-Large/dp/B008BFYXDG

Really no reason why canned wouldn't work as well. I do a lot of Thai cooking and I like the powder because the flavor is a little more concentrated :)

A few recommendations:

  1. Double strain, i.e., put your prepared kava through another strainer bag (doubled up if need be)

  2. Get a finer filter bag, such as a 10 Micron Size bag

  3. Chase your kava with lots of ginger tea. Throw 3-4oz of coarsely chopped fresh ginger in a pot with 3 cups water and simmer for 20 minutes. Add honey and drink during your kava session.

  4. Take some high quality probiotics. This will help break down the resistant starch in the Kava which is likely the major culprit.

  5. Get a strain that is low in both DHK (Chemotype Number: 2) and DHM (Chemotype Number: 5), such as Mo'i from Gourmet Hawaiin Kava. These two constituents tend to be more correlated with nausea. See more about Chemotypes here.

What you're describing is similar to the product known as instant kava, with the difference being that instant kava is made with fresh root as opposed to dried material.

You can see the process from around the 5:14 mark in this video. The fine dehydrated powder shown in that video ends up in this product.

You can buy instant kava (in powder form) from Gourmet Hawaiian Kava and also BKH.

You can certainly make a bit of it for personal use, but it won't be commercially viable if you start with dried kava.
