2018 graduate here. Here's what got me through.

  • Move out of the dorms. My rent was $1000/month when I was living on Mission Hill with two roommates. You can go a fair bit lower if you're willing to compromise on roommates or location.
  • Ditch the meal plan and learn to cook. It's a great skill to have and you'll be eating tastier, healthier food while also saving money. An Instant Pot or a Crock Pot is a fantastic investment for meal prep.
  • Use your savings from co-op to cover living expenses. If you can, get your co-ops extended. Get a part-time job so you have spending money. (Keep in mind that the amount of money you'll make on co-op varies wildly depending on your major.)
  • Start budgeting and get your personal finances together. Mint makes it very easy to pull together all of your information and see what you're spending. I also found this book to be very helpful.

Going more into my own experience: I didn't have a meal plan after freshman year, and I moved off-campus after sophomore year. I only had to take one semester of summer classes, so for my other summers, I convinced my co-op employers to keep me through August (I was on the January-June cycle). I often worked as a TA when I was taking classes, and there was one semester where I did part-time work for a co-op employer.

I think that the viability/payoff of staying at Northeastern really depends on your major. Ideally, your co-op money will help you get through school and the experience/networking will help you quickly get employed after graduating. If the prospects don't look good, then I think it makes more sense to transfer instead of staying and taking on tons of debt.

NOTE: You'll have to come by my dorm to pick any of these up (its on campus, and isn't inconveniently located, but I don't want to share where I live unnecessarily. I'll be on campus starting on the 5th of September. Please pay in cash, and no bills larger than twenties.

Thanks for the great answer, madison! :)

As someone who cooked pretty extensively in IV for two years, here are some more tips:

  1. Cooking equipment NEEDS to have auto-shutoff, and please do not cover the fire alarm.
I don't wanna be seeing no news articles about IV burning down.

  2. I love my vegetable steamer.

  3. If you have the money at some point, consider a foldable cart.

I cooked pancakes, eggs, fish, rice, beans, etc, without any problem. I usually opened the window, cooked near the window, and kept a fan on.

Hello!

ResNet does not have any extra Ethernet cables left, but they are pretty cheep on Amazon. An example of one is here:

https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-350MHz-Ethernet-Copper-Network/dp/B001TMYWEI/

We recommend getting a Cat5e or Cat6 25ft Ethernet cable so you can take full advantage of the speeds and reach the port from anywhere in your room.

The TV doesn't have WiFi? I advise strongly against drilling holes in NU property. Seems like something they could randomly charge you like $900 for. I would use a wireless router and connect the TV wirelessly, assuming the TV is WiFi capable.

If not, this.

Enjoy the TV!

Dude...craigslist it for a tv. But the dinning halls usually have the game on and if not you can ask and theyll put it on. also companies make these PC TV tuners that plug into your computers usb. such as [this] (http://www.amazon.com/KWorld-ATSC-Digital-Stick-KW-UB435Q/dp/B001LQEEEA/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1380657328&sr=1-6&keywords=pc+tv+tuner) it might be a great option for you

Oh boy, here we go with hardware critiques. Well, I actually use the usb-c input to connect my Mac when I’m not gaming so it also serves a productivity function. Honestly, I only kept it because of that one port and it wasn’t insanely expensive (also got it on sale). If I do decide to make the switch to a monitor with a faster/higher refresh rate, I’d need one that has built-in speakers and is 27-32” as those are big deal breakers for me

Update: What are your thoughts on this?

The beds have little shelves that you can attach to the head (or you can request one from facilities if you don't have one.)

Or you can install a window fan, or I personally just had one of these that I put against the window.

All online Nintendo games for Wii U and the Switch do not work on NURes-device due to the way the firewall is configured. They should work over Ethernet; I can confirm that the Wii U works over Ethernet, it should be the same on the Switch, but no guarantees.

You'll just need an adapter like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Internet-Officially-Licensed-wii-u/dp/B01N6S068R

Basic tool kit with stuff like this: http://www.amazon.com/Apollo-Precision-DT9706-39-Piece-General/dp/B000E20HWA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1344821244&sr=8-1&keywords=tool+kit

You don't know how much it sucks to not have a screwdriver/tape measure/allen keys until you can't find any.
