You can grab rift on Amazon for about $9 USD (free shipping). So, I wouldn't pay much more than that. You'll get the additional bag slots as well as character slots. Keep in mind, the last two bag slots can only be unlocked with credits.
http://www.amazon.com/Rift-Pc/dp/B002I0HIC8/
On the other hand, Storm Legion will only get you the new souls, nothing else. If you are a patron, Storm Legion costs 3,150 credits. You can get 3,250 credits for $20. Last I checked, actual boxes of SL were going for about $20, but they've been pulled from Amazon. It might be more worth your time to unlocked it through credits, you'll have some left over credits and a nice bonus of loyalty.
You become a patron as a subscription, and you get daily bonuses that you can utilize to help you. You can look up the patron bonus on their website.
If you're thinking about becoming a patron, the best way is to just buy the physical game for about $10.
http://www.amazon.com/Rift-PC/dp/B002I0HIC8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1383167090&sr=8-1&keywords=rift
The reason is because your free account have limitations, such as, 2 character slots per server, limited 3 bag slots, etc. For comparison, if you want to unlock additional bag slot it will cost you about 840 gems, which is a little over $5. and it's ONLY for that character.
By buying the physical box to get the code (or digital code, but those are hard to find), you'll permanently unlock more character slots, and 5 bag slots for ALL your characters, including future alts (account wide).
In addition to the game code you buy from physical box, you'll also get 30 days patron pass, and loyalty points. This will also enable your ability to use the auction house, which you wouldn't be able to use as free account.
Content-wise, you'll be able to play it all even without subscribing. I wouldn't recommend paying for patron on the regular basis, instead, get the box code, and maybe look to unlock the Soul Storm classes instead.
I'm pretty new to the game myself, so if anything I wrote is wrong, someone will correct me shortly ;)
This newbie guide I made may be a good idea to read over.
As for your direct questions, f2p. It's recommended that you look for a copy of the base game, like [this copy] (http://www.amazon.com/Rift-PC/dp/B002I0HIC8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1426226081&sr=8-1&keywords=rift+game). It provides you permanent benefits, such as more bag and character slots, along with a free month of patronage. Keep in mind, the link (at the time of posting) was only about $8, which is far cheaper than the monthly patron cost of $15 for one month.
As outlined in my guide, you are always allowed to select different soul paths from what the purpose guides provide. The guides are basically to help people understand a bit about the souls and what is possible, you are never required to follow them blindly. If you feel that one choice is going to better suite what you want, then by all means, choose what you want. There's a few sections of my guide that explain this in better detail. As well as explaining that you can purchase additional roles to allow you to have more options as you continue to play.
As for souls, you need to understand some different terms. First, souls are combined to form roles. Those roles determine how the dungeon finder sees you. The default 8 souls provided by the game allow you to customize your character, so that you can be pretty much anything within 3 out of 4 roles in the dungeon finder. As a warrior, that leaves you with souls that make you into either a tank, dps, or support, but you have to purchase a soul pack in order to have a soul appropriate for healing. Each archetype is missing a soul that makes them into either a tank, healer, or support, but every archetype can be a dps, without paying for the soul packs. More details on that in the guide.
As long as they keep their marketing budget up it will definitely jump or atleast beat WOW out in terms of new MMO users soley for 1 reason.
The price of complete rift 49.99 + 15
The price of complete wow 96.99 + 15
Second reason total time it takes 1-50 for rift (about 3 1/2 days Playtime)
WOW ( supposedly 4 days with BOAs and RAF) without that your screwed
So i say that rift for brand new players will be a Wayy easier sell as long as they keep advertising strong and they are mentioned on the internet by users alot. I dont see anybody leaving the game but its still to early to tell if it will be dry after clearing content.
I bought a copy off of amazon
about 2 weeks ago for less than 10 bucks shipped. Totally worth it, got all the character slots, bag slots etc plus a free month of patron. Probably 30-40 bucks worth of stuff if bought separately in the rift store.
Edit: here is link if anyone is interested, you get the whole original case but you just have to activate the key on your current account on trions website its easy

Don't see many laptops in here. I bought an Acer TimelineX 4820TG-6847 two weeks a go and have been nothing but pleased with the performance so far. I haven't turned on a framerate display but other than very brief rare dips in rifts I have a stable framerate on ultra.
Specs:
i5 480m
Radeon 6550m
4GB DDR3
I really recommend this computer if anyone's looking for a good, portable, and fairly inexpensive gaming laptop.

The only Storm Legion content that is not free is the Storm Legion Souls. This includes Tactician, Harbinger, Defiler, and Tempest. I think it's something like $15-$20. Alternatively, you can trade platinum in-game for REX. The rate is roughly 1100 platinum for 1 REX, which equates to 1250 credits. 2 REX should be enough to buy the souls.
There aren't many boxed copies of storm legion left and judging by the amazon listing they don't come with extra bonuses such as bag slots and character slots, and it's far overpriced compared to just buying the souls.
There are other retail versions such as standard edition and Ashes of History which do include bonuses, but not the storm legion souls (The keys I linked say EU but also work for US).
Amazon: http://smile.amazon.com/Rift-PC/dp/B002I0HIC8/
Also, I believe the Amazon Collectors Edition is $18.95 (with free shipping with Prime) cheaper than getting it through the Rift website.
No. Thats just the link they give you to share. Much easier to share http://amzn.com/B004M191RQ than it is http://www.amazon.com/Trion-Worlds-40577Rift1-Rift-Download/dp/B004M191RQ/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1299906394&sr=8-4
Buy the game for 13.00 from Amazon. It give you 6 character slots per shard, extra bag slots, and a 30 day patron pass. Otherwise if you bought them separately with store credits it would cost way more than 13.00. [Amazon Link] (http://www.amazon.com/Rift-PC/dp/B002I0HIC8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1409975536&sr=8-1&keywords=rift)

Can't find any info anywhere that says it unlocks bag slots.
http://www.amazon.com/Telara-Chronicles-Ricardo-Sanchez/dp/1401230547 right there :)
If you plan on buying the Storm Legion souls I just purchased the PC version from Amazon that included the souls and some other items as well as 30 days of patron time for $39.99

Gamestop's sale prices are everyone else's regular prices. Buy it from Amazon, get the code instantly, and play for a month for ($8). In a month you'll know whether you want to continue your subscription or not.
Hey mate, Since you know to know about this could you tell me what would I get if I bought this base game please?
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002I0HIC8/sr=1-1/qid=1381037680/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&qid=1381037680&seller=&sr=1-1
$12 more for the souls with http://www.amazon.com/RIFT-Storm-Legion-PC/dp/B004O0U494 Cheaper than buying credits for them.

Just thank me later
This is $6 on Amazon, does that give me the bag/character slots I'm looking for? If so, awesome.
Is it the boxed copy or a digital code? Cos the boxed copy comes with the base game, expansion, and 30days of game time. At least according to the Amazon product description http://www.amazon.com/RIFT-Storm-Legion-Pc/dp/B004O0U494
Why, amazon had it for $35 Friday and just bumped it up to $40. http://www.amazon.com/Rift-Pc/dp/B002I0HIC8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1303787512&sr=8-1

Nope
It's not available on Amazon anymore it seems: http://www.amazon.com/Rift-day-game-time-card-Pc/dp/B004K66O2S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1310164181&sr=8-1
This is what I meant.
Didn't mean to cause any confusion.
I second this. The game just isn't controller friendly. At a minimum, you'll need movement, look, and mouse-move. Mouse control isn't something you can ignore. There are in-game UI elements that even pop-up during combat.
An xbox controller doesn't have space for all this, so your playstyle will suffer.
A gamepad on the other hand can be used with a mouse. I tried this playstyle before, and I personally didn't like it. Mostly because I use a huge amount of keybindings. But it is feasible, and it would be a better alternative to an xbox controller.
>why get to "Technical" ?
First off, sorry I offended you, I was just trying to clarify something because some people would read that comment, go out, buy both SL and RIFT, and possibly come back with a code they can't use, because they have two base RIFT keys. I didn't mean "this dumb fuck is all wrong", I just wanted to show there's more than just the two boxes (Base and SL), and their collectors versions. I wasn't being technical, again, sorry if that's the way it came off to you.
Carrying on, here is the box I was talking about, it's the "standard" version. The physical copy is available worldwide, the downloadable versions are only available in the US. That link also has the expansion only "big ass banner" box art on the respective box. Why the ones you linked didn't, I have no idea. I'd personally blame lazy sales-people just googling and using the first box art they see, even if that's not actually the one that goes with that CD in particular. It's still Storm Legion as far as they're concerned, and it's not a collectors version. Maybe the banner is only on US copies, maybe that doesn't show up on the physical box, again, I have no idea. I just know that was the first link I found, and the expansion only box was appropriately labeled as such.
Either way, the non-expansion only copies in that link say in the description that "This massive edition includes the RIFT base game-" and that's where I was coming from. If you wanna argue that I'm still a dick because the boxes contain base RIFT, and that it's still base RIFT that gives you the character/bag slots, fine, I should have been more clear and just said box(es) where I said CD(s). Again, my point was that you could go out and pick up "Storm Legion" box and still get the benefits from both CDs.
