blizzard sells the game for $19.99, amazon has it for $19.99 with burning crusade. The battle chest can usually be found for the same price (or possibly cheaper) at your local game store.

As long as they keep their marketing budget up it will definitely jump or atleast beat WOW out in terms of new MMO users soley for 1 reason.

The price of complete rift 49.99 + 15
The price of complete wow 96.99 + 15

Second reason total time it takes 1-50 for rift (about 3 1/2 days Playtime)
WOW ( supposedly 4 days with BOAs and RAF) without that your screwed

So i say that rift for brand new players will be a Wayy easier sell as long as they keep advertising strong and they are mentioned on the internet by users alot. I dont see anybody leaving the game but its still to early to tell if it will be dry after clearing content.

Hemholtz answered the question of expansions, this is added info:

If you don't mind the wait, this package from Amazon is $39 for the original game plus Burning Crusade and a couple guides that might help get you started.

1-70 Cheapest, Comes with a free month; note all keys are battle chest keys now

70-80 Wrath of the Litch King

80-85 Cataclysm

85-90 Mysts of Pandaria, Coming out some time within the next 6 months.

So 1-85 now is $65 with a free month... Not too bad, $65 is a pretty decent price point. I think i paid like $140 over the years for xpacs.

What're you talking about?

There's no point in getting lich up front as it's almost all endgame content. No new races or starting classes either.

No problem.

Also, when you buy the original game, it comes with a month of game time. Also, it is too bad you didn't sign up last week, they had the first game and expansion for $5 each, and the third expansion for $10. Ah well.

Make sure to shop around a little. I bought my lil brother this for christmas last year The Battlechest, and it was a pretty good deal. If any of your friends play WoW, or want to sign up with you, it is so very worth it to do the recruit a friend thing. Just ask them about it if anyone you know plays WoW. Some people in the /r/wow subreddit might even be willing to recruit you themselves and you two could level up together.

But also, if you are just starting and don't want to spend a lot in a huge chunk, just buy the first original game and see how you like it. You don't really do anything with the expansions until you hit the level cap (level 60 for the original, 70 for the second, 80 for the third).

You won't be able to be goblins/worgen/blood elves/draeni with just the original game, but you should have plenty to mess with on the cheap to see if you really want to 'invest' in the game.

You'd pay $19.99 off the blizzard website, get a free month of play, and be able to play once you downloaded the game.

You can also download a 10 day free trial from the blizzard site to see if you want to take the plunge, and you have several days to mess around on it pre-cata.

(the trial has some restrictions to be aware of though, from what I remember, you can't join a guild, or trade items, or level past 20.)

Actually, if you want to try it, message for a guest pass that'll give you 14 days of free play for you to try it out. Also, my main is on the same server as the reddit alliance guild, so you'd be playing with redditors.

As for price...yeah it's kinda pricey, but I'd recommend buying this first. It's $30 and includes the original game and first expansion...thus saves you $10 over buying them separately (and comes with some COMPLETELY useless guides (the game has changed too much since then to make them worth the paper they're on)).

For every thousand players who have all the expansions there is one player like you (totally made up statistic - but I don't think it's to far off the mark since you are quite literally the first person I've ever met in WoW who isn't fully updated).

Generally speaking - it is expected that if you play WoW you are fully updated to the latest content. What do you want? Blizz to give you Cata / WOTLK content for free after they spent quite literally years developing them? You already get the new upgrading Cata questing (until level 60), jewel crafting (which was a TBC only exclusive), and access to new class / race combos.

This is a WORLD you are paying for - people aren't just paying for content they are paying for maintenance and general upkeep. As of right now - you can get all the games for $107.95 on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/World-Warcraft-Battle-Chest-Mac/dp/B000H96C9M/ref=sr_1_2?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1301445602&sr=1-2

That is the price of admission. If most of the players agree that the cost is acceptable - to be an outlier, complaining that you are being "locked out" because of a pay wall is ridiculous.

It's cheapest on amazon:

Vanilla + Burning Crusade

Wrath of the Lich King

Cataclysm

Total: $79.97
