Yeah, black R2's showed up a few times in the original trilogy. Incidentally, Sphero's black R2-Q5 is my favorite of the droids they made.
Note that by now there are various versions of all the books. The original--from which I am quoting--was subtitled from the adventures of Luke Skywalker and said "by George Lucas" and was ghostwritten by Alan Dean Foster (who also penned the novel Splinter of the Mind's Eye which was intended to be a kind of sequel before anyone knew there would be a wild phenomenon).
