I don't know what goggles you wear now but they do make a women's pair of vanquishers. I don't have any experience with women's goggles obviously, but the reviews look good and I'm sure that they work well. I do believe since they are women's they have a smaller socket size.

A great thing about these goggles though is that they come with interchangable nose pieces to fit the size of your nose bridge. It really is nice and this also may be the cause of your leakage. They are a little difficult to change but that's good because then you know it won't randomly pop out or something.

Before you rush out and buy these I just want you to be aware that you absolutely can over tighten your goggles. That will cause those infamous red rings and even cause some leakage. There is definitely a sweet spot for some goggles and loosening those straps may be a fix. But if that's not the case these goggles are in my opinions a great option.

Hi, new to swimming here. First off, great post.

I just scheduled to meet with a coach next week to learn how to start swimming as a sport (more specifically tri's). She mentioned that I should get goggles and tights. I've been cycling (and wearing cycling shorts) so showing off the form of my legs isn't too big of a deal. I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of what to buy. I figure I'd ask here just incase if there are some other total newbies looking. I plan to read the sidebar, use the search function, and hopefully become an active member of /r/swimming!

I went ahead and ordered:

I use these from Amazon

They fit great, comfortable and don't leak.

Latex caps always pull out the little baby hairs around my hairline so I avoid them like the plague anyways. Silicone caps are the way to go. Here's the basic Speedo ones on Amazon but honestly silicone caps should be available nearly anywhere. Also her hair will probably get wet even with a cap, it's just not designed to be waterproof. Getting her some swim-specific shampoo like this stuff would be a nice present, I think! I don't personally use it (my hair doesn't seem to care) but a ton of girls on my team do.

oh no. yeah don't wear those. just googled them. that's amazing. props for even doing a 300 in those things. i had speed sockets in high school (05-08) and actually still try to buy them whenever i need a new pair. extremely comfortable, last forever, and if you want to do open water, they have mirrored so you aren't getting a bunch of sun in your eyes. also not too expensive.

Here are some books that might help:

A backstroker on my college team used this type . I tried it a few times and worked great, kept all the water out.

How about a speedo and a drag suit or a pair of these: tyr resistance shorts

I wear a speedo and those shorts and it works great. Adds some drag to your practice as well.

You can find dragsuits by just searching most brands have a version. Both add a bit of modesty to your practices.

Search on Amazon: silicone swim cap

Something like this: Speedo Silicone Cap

For longer sets, I got one of those hand tally counters.

here

They are available anywhere for a couple bucks, and I keep it next to my water bottle at the end of the pool

Oh I didn't notice you had said 'film', earlier! I tried RainX spray because I had some for my car anyway. This: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BVRZ74/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_awdo_t1_7zHlDb8KXA2PP
So I can't speak to the film idea... Sorry. The RainX spray did work much better than spit or shampoo, though.

Growing up I always had issues with swimmers ear and other swimming related problems with my ears. I would start by cleaning your ears out completely with a good wax removal system. First using the liquid to help soften up the wax and then the "syringe" (tear drop thingy in the pic below) to flush out any remaining wax. I personally use ear plugs every time I swim now to prevent any issues.

College and Olympic swimmers are all racing in jammers these days which influences the sport a lot. You don't want loose shorts for lap swimming because its like pulling a parachute through water. They actually make "drag suits" just for that reason, think ankle weights while running/walking. Age group and high school swim teams that swim at my pool (San Diego, CA) are a mix of swim briefs (speedos) and jammers. Masters swimmers like me are all over the place but about half of us wear the square-cut trunk style suits like this. Jammers take to long to dry in my swim bag and I dont like all the fabric squeezing my thighs. I'd wear briefs if I was still under 18% BMI. But I'm closer to 25% and dont want to be "that guy". I feel the square cuts are more appropriate for us old guy lap swimmers and masters. Thats just my opinion though. One of the advantages of being old guy/banana hammock is that usually zero fucks are given, regardless of emotional trauma they might be inflicting on innocent bystanders in the vicinity.

I want to suggest swedish goggles because I've seen some that were a dark green tint, but I can't find anything similar online.

This is exactly the same exact advice Arnold gives in his Workout Bible... basically, whatever workout is more important for you to do, do that first. So if you're a triathlete who is supplementing weight training, do your S/B/R 1st. If you're a bodybuilder who is doing cardio to supplement your cut, do your cardio second.
