You should check out Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. It's got magicians, but more in a real life sense. Has been described to me as a more sophisticated and grown up version of Harry Potter. It's long, has great characters, and the epic cranks out more and more as the book progresses. I loved it.
Check out China Mieville. He's bending genre's hardcore with his Bas Lag universe. It's fantasy/horror/steam punk. Perdido Street Station followed by The Scar are both amazing and truly original. There are no kings, queens, elves, dwarves or much of anything you'd expect in a Tolkien like fantasy world and it's not about the simplicities of good vs. evil. Instead you get a lot of compelling grey areas and horrific things I can't even mention without spoilers. There's also a third called Iron Council but I haven't read it yet. Oh, and it's not a trilogy, they just take place in the same universe with casual links between the stories.

Edit: I'm doing a horrible job selling the idea that Mieville is good here. But as a fan of the horror and fantasy genre's I find Mieville to be extremely creative, original and entertaining.
I would highly recommend checking out The Outlaw King series by S.A. Hunt. It's a great series a definitely has a Dark Tower vibe to it.
I asked King how old Roland was in my interview in The Dark Tower Companion.
His answer: I don’t know any of these things. Your guess is as good as mine, really. My assumption is that something happened to Roland after Gilead fell and it has to do with the Beams and time getting funny and that he really has lived a more or less normal life, that it’s time itself that’s gone off the rails. That’s all I know. The only other thing that I can say is that my concept of the book when I started, when I was very young, like 22 years old, probably mutated to something that was a little less mythic as time went by.
Did he? Why is Amazon advertising TDOTT as revised? Honestly curious, not being a smart ass.

Edit: Wastelands too
https://www.amazon.com/Waste-Lands-Revised-Dark-Tower/dp/0452284716
there is one for the wastelands like that read by SK too, but thats it. When Wizard and Glass released they rerecorded all 4 with Frank Muller reading them, then by the time Wolves came out Frank had died (RIP, press F to pay respects...) so the revised Gunslinger and 5-7 are all read by George Guidell. SK did end up reading The Wind Through the Keyhole himself and im pretty sure Simon & Scheuster released it on CD
Heres a listing on amazon for the OG wastelands... considering the way they use stock pics im not sure if the edition is correct or if you'd end up getting the Muller Version if you bought it you'd probably want to verify which one it is with the seller but that picture is of the SK version (the muller one is green)

Let's get some things straight.
It's not just book 1, 2 and 3.
If you look at Product Details is states that it has 4720 pages.
These covers also seem to be new. Not movie tie-in either. Im guessing this based on my new find.l
I've found covers for books 2, 3 and 4 on amazon which wi be released December 27. The letters of SK's name seem to be in line with the new SK covers from Simon and Schuster. The release date is also very close to the boxset.
The Gunslinger is on amazon as well, but without a cover. Books 4.5 - 7 I didnt find.

Some of the things are defined through context, "gunna" (your stuff you're traveling with), "bucka" (some kinds of wagon), then there are the ones that make no sense until explained like ka and tet.
If you're super stuck and planning to read the whole series, take a look at Robin Furth's "Stephen King's The Dark Tower: The Complete Concordance" Amazon link
P.S: There is an updated and expanded one coming in November to reflect Wind Through the Keyhole.

Except that they did.. The comics go up to 12 years after Jericho hill with the Gunslinger Arc.

And they even did the Little Sisters of Eluria.

Also, the Comics were lead by Robin Furth, not Stephen King. :/

If you want to continue the story of Roland after Susan.
The matching versions for 5-8 are only for Kindle. The retail version is still the old version.
It's a copy of "Different Seasons"

It isn't really anything like The Dark Tower, but if you want to try something off the beaten path, I love The Death Gate Cycle by Margaret Weis / Tracy Hickman (the duo that did Dragonlance). It's a multi-world seven-book series, fantasy (though not as "high fantasy" as Dragonlance), and the first book is called Dragon Wing.

If you want a similar feel of "epic" without committing to a GIGANTIC series (nothing wrong with them, just differentiating), check out "The Library at Mount Char" by Scott Hawkins:
https://www.amazon.com/Library-at-Mount-Char/dp/0553418629
If you want to read a (not finished) series that feels a lot like DotT (in terms of pacing and fun) check out The Gentlemen Bastard series by Scott Lynch. Start with "The Lies of Loch Lamora" (my fave non-DT book):
https://www.amazon.com/Lies-Locke-Lamora-Gentleman-Bastards-ebook/dp/B000JMKNJ2 (it's only $1.99 kindle!)
Yeah! Steven King just released it under a pseudonym. You can get it for 15 dollars.
It's creepy as fuck. I have no clue if the folks running my library even knew what it was when they ordered it. They had it on display with a bunch of other children's books.
