Without knowing the specifics of that certification, a couple of resources that may help:
Again, I'm not familiar with that certification (or any mapping certification whatsoever), but I'm curious as well, I want to take the winter (not much flytime in the PNW) to up my mapping game with GIS and going deeper with geodesy and remote sensing. I would be interested in hearing if any one can build a good "curriculum" for becoming a decent mapper.
Maybe you could use the same tape as on skateboards and stairs? It's pretty resistant and can be changed when worn down, it's also rather cheap!

That is what I use for targets, I buy them in bulk...They have some weight and stay flat and can be disposable....
