The index controllers are not fine IMO. I RMA'd mine and they eventually got replaced by a new set that was even worse. I'm keeping them anyways because I'd rather deal with never playing Rec Room again and just using auto-run in Pavlov than go back to the Vive wands. I wanted joysticks and buttons so badly that I'm willing to put up with them. I'm also fine with VR devs never using the joystick click mechanic anymore. I hate the mechanic, and that hatred has only grown with my inability to do it consistently now.

I went from ZERO god rays and huge sweet spot in my Vive with the GearVR lens mod to consistent glare whenever there is something bright contrasted with dark environments but still a huge sweet spot. It kinda sucks but the resolution is fantastic and you can only see the pixels if you're trying really hard. Just sucks that an environment like Bigscreen is perfect for that resolution but the glare is a pretty big eyesore. I've heard environments other than the theater are better but I really did like the theater environment.

I had my Vive decked out with super padded VR Cover and replacement VR DAS back padding. It eventually was comfy. Index is comfy out of the box.

I do really like the speakers. Not setting on your ears helps with comfort, heat and longevity.

For things like beat saber, I'd recommend just getting a headband. Helps keep the sweat on your head instead of pouring into the foam.

***DISREGARD, apparently the hdmi extension will not work with index.***

I've posted this before but this is what I used to extend ~40 ft, the USB to 50' wont be a problem, the hdmi "should" be ok as well but it could come down to cable quality etc:

The key is you need to extend BEFORE the link box, the linkbox cable to headset needs to be the normal one. I used an active HDMI cable to go 40feet from my PC, then a USB extender (uses a cat6 cable) to extend the USB. IT worked fine, i had zero issues. I actually ran another 40foot active HDMI to mirror to the TV in that room and had no issues with either.

HDMI cable:

usb extender:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013VP3372/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

You'll need to supply the cat6 cable for the usb side.

I haven't seen this problem very much at all besides us so I'm not totally sure what the cause is. Gonna play more today and see if the windows open messes it up again.

If it does, then I guess thats it and the index controllers are just more sensitive to light somehow.

But reading your issue again, I'm not so sure it's the same issue as me. Yours sounds like a room-setup issue or something. I'd keep tweaking the base stations, make sure they're looking at each other, roughly the same height, etc...maybe stable too? I use a tripod stand for my base stations and it works great. Think it's these ones

After double checking all that I'd start trying different USB slots, checking for firmware updates, restarting PC etc etc.

If it still acts up, maybe look into RMA..not too sure.

Awesome, thank you and everyone else as well for the replies.

Tracker

I'm guessing the 2018 model here (blue logo) is the one ya are talking about. For something like VR chat would four trackers have any use? I see most people buy them in groups of three. Do the sensors come with anyway to strap to the body or do I need to buy those as well?

u/badillin · 3 pointsr/ValveIndex

For the tangling after an hour, you need TURNSIGNAL (on steam free)

It gives visual queue to how twisted is your cable.

OR

maybe Cable Guardian https://github.com/Bitslo/CableGuardian/releases

Does the same as Turnsignal, but the queues are AUDIO not visual.

Here im pasting a looong response, bc i didnt want to retype it :)

This is the one i got... BUT this is not everything you need.

The one thing ive seen missing in most of the ceiling solutions i see are "limiters", as in, putting a piece of cardboard or tape or something on the cable so that the hooks dont slide past a certain point.

Like the 1st hook closest to the headset must be ~40cm so it always "pulling" me a bit so the cable doesnt hang below my shoulders.

https://imgur.com/ZmDhFY9.jpg

The next hook limiter is ~70cms from the 1st one..

https://imgur.com/hL8XjK6.jpg

Before i put the "limiters" the hooks would slide up and down the cable ruining the immersion because i had to place them correctly every X time.

Now, the cable gets pulled "evenly" when i crouch or move around.

https://imgur.com/gekI4Nc.jpg

Imagine the headset walked towards the camara, how the cable would be pulled, the 1st hook would be the only one pulling back, until the part that hangs is pulled far enough that the 2nd hook needs to give some lenght.

But at the same time, if i go back to my original position, the cable is pulled back to where its still hanging high enough to not bother me most of the time.

And if i move towards the cable, the 2nd hook is high enough for me to not notice the cable when walking below it.

If i had a higher ceiling, i could place the hanging wire to not even be close to my hands if fully extended.

Right now with my setup, i can only touch the cable if im extending my arms all the way, and im reaching back and to the left (regarding the playspace). All the other movements dont get in the way.

On your own setup youll have to play how much cable hangs in between hooks depending on your height and the ceilings height.

https://imgur.com/tfzMhYZ.jpg

Thats how i planned the placement of the hooks, putting them behind me instead of directly above.

I actually bought a sweatband that I started wearing during VR sessions.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071S3VJZS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

When doing set rotations with friends (people constantly swapping in and out of VR taking turns) they have actually thanked me for wearing it now lol. It makes a noticeable difference. Otherwise I have towels at the ready to try and absorb as much sweat as possible from the fabrics between switches.

When I clean my Vive lenses I usually use glasses cleaner soaked into a spot on a microfiber cloth (which I assume to be some kind of special soapy solution, but really have no idea), which I then do gentle circular wipes with (after making sure there's no obvious hard particles sitting on the lens). Specifically, I use Koala Kleaner, but that's just because I got a big bottle of it with some microfiber wipes.

Is there a reason this is a bad idea vs. dry wipes, or is dry just safer than using a solution that "might" be alcohol-based or ammonia-based, etc.?

u/JonVisc · 3 pointsr/ValveIndex

Not OP but I use these and they are perfect and fold up to a decently small size (they look like they may be the same as well):

You'll need to fetch yourself one of these tiny micro USB to USB A adapters. I got mine on Amazon UK right here, but you can find them elsewhere as well. This set looks identical on Amazon US.

You stick the micro end into the Leap Motion like this photo shows. After that, just plug it right in, no special angle or anything, there's still a huge gap. I was tempted to put some sticky material behind it to keep it in place and prevent stress on the port, but the Leap Motion unfortunately is always powered on, and heats up quite a bit.

I'm getting full coverage of my FOV in this position, and it turns out that the sensor runs at 115Hz/FPS, so trying it out in the VR Visualizer diagnostic program that displays passthrough from the sensor was a very comfortable experience ... I wish my Index passthrough cameras would start working :(

Oh right, forgot one important point: The tracking is a lot worse if you put the frunk cover on over it. It's easy to see why by using that Visualizer program I mentioned. The plastic is too reflective, causing glare from the Leap Motion's infrared LEDs.

Bonus pic: the new Index adapter from Tundra Labs arrived today, too! One less wall plug required now.

I would just be careful about any stand/holder that puts the lenses up or leaves them exposed anywhere to direct sunlight, as the lenses on some headsets could potentially start burning the panels.

I leave the headset in a small dedicated shelf in my computer desk but got one of these for the controllers with some magnetic cables and they work really great as a charging dock

u/clamsPIANOS · 13 pointsr/ValveIndex

I can vouch for this, I use it on my eye glasses as well.

https://www.amazon.com/Koala-Kleaner-Eyeglass-Microfiber-Cleaning/dp/B0785SB7J6/

Alcohol and ammonia free.

Be sure to remove any tiny particulates from the lenses, or you will scratch them!

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078RF5VMV/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 is correct. I purchased the small which are.
“Pack of 3 drawstring dust bag, small measurement: 12 1/2 x 15 3/4 inches”. If you tighten the headstrap knob, it is a perfect fit.

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/ValveIndex

Yeah, they look good for the job - thanks.

For those in the UK:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B078RF5VMV/ref=pe_3187911_185740111_TE_item

These actually come from the US Amazon but you pay Sterling instead of paying $ on the US site (which might actually be cheaper).

If anyone is interested. Here is my setup.

Used this kit for the pulleys. Double pulleys make a big difference. Very little resistance

You can go even further and get rid of anything between amazon.com/ and /dp/.../ like so: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078Y4WNVR/

u/Asiul_Etraud · 1 pointr/ValveIndex

Here are some answers:

  • power cords are 4.5m
  • they are replaceable and are the same as Vive (it's on valve's website),so something like this will do, also, the transformer is the same for base stations and headset
  • The base stations communicate wirelessly by bluetooth, the usb ports are for updates (never used them)
u/Karavusk · 4 pointsr/ValveIndex

The leap motion actually fits in the frunk with a mini adapter like this one https://smile.amazon.de/gp/product/B015GZOHKW/

I got this one, works really well.
25ft - 1/2 Inch Flexo PET Expandable Braided Tube - Black - Braided Cable Sleeve https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B071ZV6MZ2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_jnMxDbGDNDWTS

anything that in US store is 100$ in EU is 100E , even if you buy it from Amazon, for example. Things in US are much cheaper, and importing them here you need to pay transport, import tax, VAT, etc..

the differences in "other costs" cover about the conversion rate differences, so you can just take the currency sign and change it, for comparisons

sometimes the differences are even larger.:
A Headset-only Vive Pro in US is
800$ on Amazon US

and
HTC.de : 880 EUR

I've used this with the rift for the past year and has been great (keeps dust out, prevents sunlight from hitting the optics, and makes it harder for spiders to sneak in and murder you when you least suspect it): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M62A4VH

u/cazman321 · 7 pointsr/ValveIndex

You linked belts for the trackers, not the trackers themselves. You're referencing base stations that come with the Index kit, which are necessary to use trackers. The trackers are not included with the kit. Each tracker is $99 https://www.amazon.com/VIVE-Virtual-Reality-System-Tracker-pc/dp/B0748ZY323

u/MrEWhite · 2 pointsr/ValveIndex

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IUSYF8G

I use this, charges both of them at the same with with fast charging.

u/SvenViking · 45 pointsr/ValveIndex

While not impossible, I don’t think this represents any form of evidence. You also have a Vive headset, Vive controllers, and Vive base stations. The reason you’d specify “headset” in the product name is that it’s not a complete system. People need to be aware that they’re buying the headset only, and need to own or buy the base stations etc. separately.

u/RoadRunner_1024 · 3 pointsr/ValveIndex

you will need to use a fiberoptic displayport extension, this for instance:https://www.amazon.com/FIBBR-Displayport-Compatible-Projector-Graphics/dp/B07BW1DJ89

or a backpack with a VR Laptop inside! :o

u/riptide747 · 1 pointr/ValveIndex

Like this?

I'm not really into paying a few hundred bucks for a cable...

u/QuadJunky · 27 pointsr/ValveIndex

Used -25ft - 1/2 inch Flexo PET Expandable Braided Sleeving – Black from Amazon...... (are links allowed?)

Remove cable from HMD completely.

Work the sleeving over the end that plugs into the HMD and start expanding it and sliding it over about 3" at a time down the cable, ever so often work the sleeving down the cable.

I used 3:1 3/4 heat shrink and slide it from the HMD plug down to the breakaway end. Hold and slightly twitch and pull to tighten the sleeving as you work it back towards the HMD plug. Doing this tightens the sleeving this is user preference as to how tight etc.

Cut off the end near the HMD plug rubber stopper I used scissor and poked through the sleeving using a razor knife is not advised as the sleeving is tough and cutting the cable would be easy if you slip. I used a lighter to melt the cut end of the sleeving carefully not to burn the cable then used some more heat shrink.
