There are a few solutions that can help your problem #1. A long, narrow, rigid spatula is quite helpful for scraping things out from the bottom near the blades. I like this one, because it also has a nice long edge that is useful for scraping the sides.

If you get the 32-oz container, that can also help, since it is not as tall, which makes scraping things out slightly easier. It has essentially the same dimensions around the blades though, so it would help much for your other issues.

Another approach is to make a "clean-out" recipe after your thick blend. For example, after making nut butter, you can make a smoothie or shake, which will make use of the residual nut butter left in the container. That way you don't have to worry about scraping every last bit out, and none goes to waste. For hummus, blending up a savory soup works as a nice clean-out.

I purchased a Costco membership for $50 and used a coupon code from retailmenot.com to get a $10 off cash card useful towards any purchase with any new membership.

It took 2 weeks for the cash card to arrive. When it did, I bought the VitaMix 5200 Ultimate Package online. When the machine arrived I canceled the membership for a full refund. They are very easy going about canceling a membership. With free shipping and tax the total was $666, after the refund the total came to $616. The knife they include in the package sells for around $90 new on Amazon. It comes in it's own sealed package, if I can sell it for $60-$70 on ebay that would bring the total investment down to $546-$556. That is a huge savings considering you get the 64 oz wet container, a 32 oz wet and a 32 oz dry container. The 32 oz containers retail for $150 from VM and $100 from a Costco affiliate.

I thought it was $100, but maybe that's just at the road shows. That's where I saw the one without the container, and the demo lady told me it was a better deal to buy it separately, so I never checked.

But, FWIW, Amazon Prime has it for $100 with the recipe book.

Like this one: 24oz at amazon? They make a bottle, but it has ehh reviews about a leaky lid.
