I bought something similar to those light stands, but didn't like them....they "cut" into your roomscale zone, and they can not be as sturdy as you really want them to be (the lighthouses shouldn't move even the slightest bit).

I kept them for when i take my vive somewhere else and use as a portable solution. After some research, I use these now and love them...

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F3B4YPS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and for actually holding the lighthouse onto the pole...

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CSMCPKQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

those are totally metal, and worth the slight extra price compared to plastic ones (but you could probably save a little money with the plastic ones).

those poles are great and easy to move too!

hope it helps, and you made the right choice w/ vive, it's the superior HMD by far.

The obligatory "just got my Vive" post by ncviver

Damn. God damn. It's really, really good. I had some ordering issues (because I used PayPal Credit and didn't create an HTC account I couldn't check the order status on my own) but it arrived quickly and works so so well. I got two of these tripods plus two of these brackets since I wanted some mobility. So far I've used it in the living room with two tripods and in my bedroom with one of the included wall mounts and a tripod. It works great, though I do plan on installing the other wall mount (plus these two in the living room) soon.

My only complaint at this time (after maybe 3 hours of usage) is that it seems like a major oversight that there's not much instruction on how to adjust it to fit your head. Initially, I was actually pretty disappointed-- the FOV sucked and apart from a narrow sweet spot it was quite blurry. But after finding this guide it's working fine.

but yeah, right now I'm really impressed. I've only really played around with The Lab so far since my wallet is a bit too sore to start buying tons of games, but I'm guessing that'll happen pretty soon.

I pre-ordered the vive yesterday and just realised I do not have anywhere to mount the lighthouses, and cannot drill holes in the walls (rented accomodation). After a little bit of research I think I have found a relatively cost effective way to purchase two tripods and ball head brackets from Amazon.co.uk.

I have Amazon prime, so the items I chose included free one day delivery (I am not sure what the non-prime delivery charges will be)

The tripods I have purchased extend up to 2M (78") are being sold as a pair for £18.88:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00899801A?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01

I purchased two of these 1/4" tripod ball brackets for £6.99 each:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Eggsnow-Tripod-Bracket-Holder-Ballhead/dp/B00L23XN9O/ref=sr_1_6?s=photo&rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1456881505&sr=1-6&keywords=1%2F4%22+tripod+ball

Total cost: £32.86

Note:
The description of the tripod does not specify what the thread size is, but these are the best price I could find. Someone mentioned they have a 1/4" thread size in the comments, but I cannot confirm this until I receive delivery on 3rd March. (Worst case will be the need to purchase a couple of adapters.)

Hope this helps others who are trying to find a cost effective way to mount the lighthouses.

EDIT:
The tripods and ball brackets arrived today. I can confirm the tripod uses the standard 1/4" connector and fit the ball sockets perfectly.
Also, they seem fairly study, so I expect no problems with the lighthouses attached.
I can recommend these to others who are considering a tripod solution to the lighthouse mounting.

u/furluge · 2 pointsr/Vive

Why not use the screw? There's tons of clamps with 1/4"-20 thread that are meant to put lights and such onto various types of poles for film and such. I use them myself to mount my light houses onto vertical braces from harbor freight. (They have a smaller footprint than a light stand or tripod.)

Here's some examples of the ones I'm using.
Pedco 1.5 Ultra Clamp

This will grip even onto a very thin pole. For the record I mount them to these poles. Harbor Freight 2 in 1 Ratcheting Cargo Bar

Here's some other excellent multi purpose clamps but they need a ticker pole to mount.

Limostudios Super Clamp It's a clone of the more expensive manfrotto super clamp. They fit on the blue portion of the brace, not the thinner silver extended portion.

These clamps are pretty universal and you can get a number of different attachments for them. You could screw the lighthouse right on there but you couldn't really aim it without a ball mount or you could get an arm like this or this though that second one might wobble with the lighthouse motor. Arkon makes a good very sturdy clamp I've used to mount camcorders on for years though I've broken lots of the quick mounting plates over time. The arm is much stronger than the superclamp arm I showed earlier. There's also small clamps like this one

Also for the thread as someone else mentioned there are adapters. This is likely the adapter you need as that's the other common screw size you see. but I can't really know without seeing the tripod. Personally I prefer to use clamps and mount to poles anyhow, it gives you a lot of mounting options.

u/Whirlmeister · 1 pointr/Vive

Yes, it comes with controllers.

I found some over-ear headphones were uncomfortable because of the headstrap for some people, but the majority of people I've demoed for have had no problems. On-ear headphones may be a better option, and if its just for you the supplied ear buds are actually surprisingly good.

Depending on your room and whether you are happy to screw the lighthouse sensors to the wall you may need some sort of mount.

I was happy to screw the sensor mounts to the wall at home but I picked up

A couple of these
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wolfcraft-4042000-80mm-Telescopic-Support/dp/B001BWT2PA/ref=sr_1_2

and a couple of these
https://www.amazon.co.uk/MyArmor-Universial-Threaded-Microphone-Motorcycles/dp/B01A6KJDFG/ref=pd_bxgy_60_img_2

So I could bring the Vive places with me and demo (without having to screw anything to the wall).

Alternatively if you want to attach the sensors to a bookshelf or similar these are great:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Phot-R-Studio-Multi-Function-Reflector-Cameras/dp/B00MR0VPOQ/ref=pd_bxgy_60_img_3

I also ended up getting a 3m HMDI extention and a 3m USB extension because my play area is a few meters from my PC and out of the box you only get 1m cables to the breakout box.

u/bluuit · 4 pointsr/Vive

Alright, here's a few simple things. Nothing very exciting, but I wouldn't go without them now.

The basestations are suppose to have like a 50k hour lifespan. Still, I had one of the rotors die and replaced under warranty. Now I use a remote switch like this one to conveniently shut down the lighthouses when not in use and extend their life. Also helpful if the IR interferes with anything.

Similarly, unplugging and plugging in the vive controllers to charge every use could eventually wear out the usb sockets. I use a pair of magnetic usb adapters similar to these which takes away that wear and tear, plus they are reversible and just snap in place super easy.

My basestations are screwed into the wall, but I also have a pair of these clamps which have been very useful and versatile when I've taken my Vive to demo at friends places, or the office. Makes it quick and easy to clamp them to a bookcase, curtain rod, door frame, drop ceiling grid, or whatever. Much better than the giant wobbly stands many people go for.

u/OurEyesArentReal · 3 pointsr/Vive

> My assumption is that closed headphones adds more presence since it isolates you more from the real world.

This is true. But with closed headphones you get less sound stage and it feels more like you're wearing headphones than it feels like sounds are happening around you. Open headphones allow sounds to feel like there is some space between your ear and where the sounds is coming from. It's kind of a balancing act.

I'm going to be using my Sennheiser HD 558 for personal use. They're the most comfortable thing I put on everyday. I could probably wear them 24/7 and not notice them. They just kind of melt into your head and onto your ears... and they sounds great for the price.

I did buy a shorter cable and plan on ziptieing the Vive cables so I get a snugger fit without more cable flopping around. The cable that comes with Senn HD5XX headsets is at least 8 feet long. Great for at your desk, not great to be dragging around behind you in VR.

u/GingerMess · 1 pointr/Vive

Because I'm in the process of clearing stuff out of my house in preparation for moving, I opted to use camera tripods for the tracking stations. Here's a picture of one.

The tripods that I bought were these ones from Amazon UK. At the time they had a 2x 3m option for £22, but that seems to have disappeared now. I also grabbed two of these to allow angling of the tracking stations, otherwise they're fixed facing parallel to the floor.

Some notes after setting up the Vive and using them for a 4 hour session of Audioshield:

  • Tracking is perfect without jitter.
  • Mounting them is easy with the items I linked above, although I suggest you mount before extending the tripod otherwise you're manhandling a 7-foot pole (ooer).
  • The tripods wobble a bit on carpet after you're done mounting, this is fine. They'll stop wobbling and to be honest given the top-heavy setup, I'm surprised how little they wobble. I haven't noticed any wobbling while I've been using the Vive.
  • It might well be the case that having carpet dampens the shocks from moving around in the room - having tripods on a wooden floor would probably result in them vibrating to every footstep. I can't be certain of this though.

Overall I recommend tripods unless you're ok with wall mounting. They work well. Just get decent quality ones!
u/cazman321 · 2 pointsr/Vive

I flip my bed up (no headboard). Went from worrying about 2m x 1m to eventually 2.4x2.4 ish moving stuff around. Easy to do in 2 mins once you figure out the routine. Even though I have the space, I ended up getting a steering wheel+pedals for racing games. Bought a HOTAS too but haven't used it yet. Games like DiRT Rally and iRacing are really fun. I wasn't even into simracing until VR came around. Lighthouses are needed for tracking, all the time, yes. The recommended roomscale size is assuming you have nothing in the way from floor to ceiling. The lighthouses will work in small spaces for sure.

I use these in my room, and whenever I bring my rig over to people's houses. Easy to just extend them from floor to ceiling. https://www.harborfreight.com/2-in-1-support-cargo-bar-66172.html.

Then I use these and just clip onto the bar https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AMXMV3O/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/TehRawk · 1 pointr/Vive

I'm not sure how well that config file thing would work. If the lighthouses move at all, you will get some messed up things happening. Like floating or being under the floor. It would be impossible to mount the lighthouses exactly after moving them. I am sure this is a good solution for those who dont move their lighthouses, but have to move furniture to switch between roomscale and seated. Doing the roomscale/seated setup doesn't take very long.

I have the permanent mounts in my bedroom. I use camera stands for mounting in the sitting room. There are a few options for this, as the holes for mounting, are the same size as standard camera mounts. If you have somewhere to attach them, these clamps work quite well. Or these gorillapods are handy too. You can leave the piece that clicks into place, attached to the lighthouses. So they literally take 1 second to remove.

I leave the wall mounting bracket, that come with the Vive, attached to the back of the lighthouses when I move them. So I just unscrew them from the wall. This seems safer to me, than rotating the entire lighthouse to remove it from the bracket. Less chance of dropping them. There is also a screw hole in the bottom of the lighthouse, where another mounting solution can be attached. This is where I attach the camera stands.

The lighthouses can be mounted upside down, and function perfectly.

So your longest cable is the one between the pc and coupler I’m guessing? Whatever the 25 ft one is I would replace with active. The others should be fine if passive. I use the 4K cable I linked for my projector and is a good option but the redmere cable is what I used for my Vive.

I didn’t use the camera so USB 2 was fine for me and the USB 3 couplers were all pretty crappy at the time. I didn’t need to plug any external power into the USB cable but got that one just in case I needed the extra juice.

4K/60 HDMI

HDMI I used with OG Vive

Active USB Cable

You may want to start with new couplers first. I’ve had good luck with Monoprice and you could buy a HDMI, usb 2 and usb 3 one all for under 10 dollars off Amazon.

u/nonsensepoem · 2 pointsr/Vive

So far I've had perfect success with this light stand and this attachment. I extend the legs completely which then take up a relatively small area, and I secure the legs with the two strong rubber bands that came with the attachments. The footprint is a triangle of about 1' (30.48 cm) per side.

u/thelegendofme · 1 pointr/Vive

My gf revealed that I'm getting an early birthday present and that it's a vive. That's good because now I'm doing research on how I'm going to set mine up. I'm looking at getting a long USB and HDMI cable to run downstairs from my main PC since my HTPC isn't powerful enough. The distance is approximately 9 meters (~30 feet). Seems like an active USB extender and Active HDMI cable would be fine for that distance. Unless USB over Ethernet would be better.

Another question is: if I take the mini display port on the link box and plug it into a TV (with an HDMI adapter or something) would it display anything? Would like my TV to show what the Vive is seeing so people can watch. But if that doesn't work I'll just use the steam streaming.

Edit: list of products I'm looking at, if anyone has opinions on it.

You can get a 50' active USB cable from Amazon for $20. I've had mind for three years now, and am currently using it with my Vive. Granted, it is only USB 2.0, but still. $65 is pretty steep.

Edit - looks like active USB 3.0 cables are around $35 for a 33' cable.

u/contactgus · 1 pointr/Vive

Yes, those are the third hand poles that I didn't want to spend the money on, I didn't realise that they were not spring loaded. I was also thinking of the marks left by the pressure so I am considering using rubber pads on the feet. I have a pack of these lying around: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B007J6VKU2
If I remove slippery part I'll be left with 4 thick rubber pads that I can use.

Of course it all depends on whether the poles themselves will be stable enough and I'm not feeling too confident :)

As for the camera mount itself, I bought something like the recommended ones in a local shop but the shop keeper also showed me something like this which might be useful for a temporary solution or for transferring to a seated area where the lighthouse doesn't have to be held up too high (on a shelf or something):

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00MR0VPOQ

If I do end up using command strips I might use a secondary command strip and somehow tie a leash between it and the main mount. I might do that anyway to have a secondary anchor

u/EvidencePlz · 2 pointsr/Vive

uk here. I bought the woolcraft one but unfortunately they recently increased the price. so get the silveline one. do it quick cause they only have two in stock (and you need two) https://www.amazon.co.uk/Silverline-465983-Easy-Prop-1-15-2-9/dp/B000LFVE68/ref=pd_sim_60_10?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=3AM3K57DCRJMPVY3Z0H2

and a pair of these also https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01A6KJDFG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Edit: yes I know they are gonna cost a little extra, and you can do without them if you choose to hammer the basestations to your wall. but I didn't mind 'cause 1) the benefit outweighed the cost 2) I'm not worried about spending a little extra 3) my landlord wouldn't allow me to screw crap into the wall :-P

Happy Viving!

u/zarralax · 1 pointr/Vive

I'm really confused on which cables to buy. I looked at the wiki and thread and I'm not even sure if I need USB 2 or 3.

So far in my cart:

Cable Matters SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Type A Male to Female Active Extension Cable 10 Meters/32.8 Feet https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DMFFL2W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Bmkqxb9XQSP4J

Monoprice Active Select Series High-Speed HDMI Cable 30 Feet with RedMere Technology Supports Ethernet, 3D, 4K and Audio Return - Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008D5EU6E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_ankqxb5E49AJS

Will these work? So many conflicting success / failure posts.

Also do you extend from the PC to the breakout box? Or extend from the breakout box?

I wish HTC / Valve would bless what cables are compatible.

Thanks.

u/10GuyIsDrunk · 1 pointr/Vive

Sennheiser HD 558s with the 1.2m cord. Main benefit over the 598s is that the 558s use a fabric headband that grips perfectly for use in VR. These are really the ultimate Vive companion headphones, they sound wonderful for the price, they're comfy as fuck, they stay on your head, and they play nice with the Vive straps. So far I've found nothing else that does everything they do half as well. The only downside is needing to purchase the additional cable if you don't already own one (shorter cable came with the 598s in my case).

u/SoTotallyToby · 3 pointsr/Vive

I got two clamps that will clip to furniture. I have one on a shelf, the other on a curtain rail and they work bloody perfect. Great too if you travel with them and they're very small. Definitely better than having a tripod taking up space!

Only £15 for 2!

u/_madmod_ · 2 pointsr/Vive

Thanks for linking the Harbor Freight poles. They are half the price of the ones I've seen used elsewhere. I chose to get these clamps because they have better reviews and should be able to fit on smaller poles. With luck I'll be able to clamp to the silver top part of the bar hopefully making it sturdier and lower profile for transport.

This one works (I have this) but it's only 15 feet (if that's any good to you).

It's on the UK store but I'm sure you could get it too as it's from the Amazon Basics range.

EDIT: Just noticed they do a 25ft one now as well. I'm sure it wasn't there before :)

There are tons of posts about headphones in this subreddit, so I've tried to take into account all the most important features discussed to find the perfect pair. /r/Vive seems to suggest that headphones, particularly if you would ever like to demo the Vive, should have these qualities:

  • Lightweight
  • Open-backed
  • Comfortable
  • Secure on your head, even with wild movement
  • Fit people with glasses
  • Good quality audio
  • Short cable for easy management
  • Not get icky

I've found that PortaPros do all of that, and have avoided drawbacks with choosing either earbuds or larger headphones. Plus, they are extremely easy to recable. I have some paracord shipping my way and I will be posting instructions on how to get it done. If anyone else is interested but can't recable, I might be able to put together one for you once I affirm that the plug I'm using doesn't get in the way of anything.

EDIT: shoutout to /u/Nippy_Kangaroo, who also has mentioned this pair.

I can confirm this USB 2.0 Active cable 32' works with no observable lag. I just need a active HDMI cable now as my 4k 50' doesnt work at all and both 25' HDMI cables I tried work but has flickers and issues. But thanks for a great write up. Another vote for the Koss PortaPros. They sound excellent and most importantly, they are very light weight and have a tiny footprint. I practically feel like I'm using the Oculus Rift CV1 when I'm wearing them. They also fit very snug and I never have to worry about them flying off my head.

Hey guys! I'm moving to college dorm in about a month, and I'm thinking about how to mount my lighthouses (obviously can't drill in a dorm). Right now I'm using one of these tripod clamps for each lighthouse, clamped onto shelves on opposite corners of my room, which has worked very well!

However, I won't have anything for these clamps to clamp onto, so I was thinking of a workaround of sorts: to use the clamps I currently have, clamping onto a few of those sticky wall hooks which say they should hold the weight (up to 6.6 pounds which is immense). Do you think this would work? If not, is there a potentially less-ghetto solution which leaves a very little footprint?

TL;DR: Will sticky wall hooks support tripod clamps for a nice lighthouse setup in a college dorm?

u/kirby2000 · 1 pointr/Vive

They work great and are easy to put up and take down, so if you want to take it over to a friends house, you don't need to spend ages disassembling things.

Awesome - that's the acid test really! I got a pair of Koss Porta Pros https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00001P4ZH/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1465069306&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=koss+-+portapro&dpPl=1&dpID=41rYOdxtBmL&ref=plSrch. Removed the headband, and the mechanism for comfort on the 'phones can be hooked straight over the vive headstrap. I had Velcro on it, but removed it to make it easier to adjust for others. Like you, I forget it's on, and others don't mention it at all. I think the best bit is that people used to always try to take off the vive first (so headphones usually fell). No longer a problem!

u/theprotoman · 2 pointsr/Vive

I tried the face mask mod and it worked alright. The problem was that after wearing it for about 45 minutes to an hour my face had this horrible black mark from where the mask made contact. It was like it stained my face and I had to scrub it with every cleansing agent I could find. The shit just wouldn't come off. I ended up scrubbing my face raw.

I thought maybe I just needed to clean the face mask material real good, but it didn't help. After the second time I gave up and tossed it. I'm assuming it was the dye in the material coming off my on face from the pressure and sweat. This is the one I bought after seeing it recommended.

I ended up going with this stuff instead and it's worked great. It's basically the same as what u/gamermusclevideos is recommending.

u/Gingaskunk · 2 pointsr/Vive

There really isn't any benefit at all in using the official power adapters. FWIW I have one of THESE between my official adapter and each of my base stations so I can physically turn them off on the wires I keep set up in my home.

I also have 2 each of THESE to power the base stations when I take my set up off-site to run demos and they work perfectly. I also use 2 of THESE to extend the reach of the after market cables, in case there isn't an outlet right by the base station.

I've used these parts since I first got my Vive (I was in the first batch of pre-orders) and it works great!

u/codepony · 1 pointr/Vive

Are you using the USB ports on your motherboard? I had the same issue and adding a PCIE USB card fixed it instantly. Camera and tracking work beautifully as well now. Most motherboard USB controllers are really outdated or are lacking features found in the full USB specification. So far it seems USB cards using the Fresco controller are the best for any VR work.

Here's what I bought. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FPIMICA

Here's the set up I use and like it very much. I looked at the light stands too, but didn't want the feet on the stand protruding into my play space. They have worked great and have had no issue. You may be able to find shorter ones, but I have high ceilings and had to go with these.

http://www.amazon.com/FastCap-Support-System-144-Inches-3HAND5/dp/B000067S12?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01

You can get shorter ones from Harbor Freight for a lot cheaper. They just weren't long enough for my ceilings. The one from Amazon is much sturdier too.

I did notice one is a bit longer than the other for some reason, but other than that. They both work perfectly fine.

u/Ashrack · 2 pointsr/Vive

I grabbed this one:

Very solidly built clamp, strong spring mechanism and the mount has a good range of motion with a screw tightener that looks like it'll hold the lighthouse in any position I need. I don't have a lighthouse yet to test beyond that, but for <$10 this looks to be perfect.

u/Arbiter329 · 4 pointsr/Vive

Just a heads up, the Amazon link you posted doesn't ship to the US.

Here are a few options for US folk (I haven't tried either of these, just FYI so can't speak for quality)

NEEWER® Multi-function Spring Clamp Clip Holder Mount with Ball Head w/ standard 1/4" Screw for SLR, Digital SLR, Video cameras

SUPON Multi-function Tripod Camera Clip Clamp Flash Holder Mount with 360 Swivel Photography Ball-Head 1/4" Threaded Screw for Camera Tripod, SLR, DSLR, Video Cameras,Studio Backdrop Camera

Personally I recommend some lightstands and ballheads, if you have the space they are great and very portable.

u/cloudbreaker81 · 1 pointr/Vive

I'm using spring clamp mount. Works very well. Can clip on to all kinds of stuff. Got one on top of a small step ladder and the other on top of a wardrobe door. Have had perfect tracking even though they are at different heights. Cheap as well.

Except for maybe a few exceptions, any headphones worth it will cost just as much, if not more, than the deluxe audio strap. I say wait and get that.

However, I have done the welder strap mod and integrated some Koss Porta Pros. They are surprisingly good, and cheap. They would fit over the standard strap fine.

That's a good point.

I have shelfs where I want to mount my base stations. I'm thinking I could actually use [this]

P.S. I really need to take a minute to figure out how to properly link on Reddit :)

First, the stands;

Then the adaptor;

And finally the finishing touch for the headpiece;
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000F8V66O/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

That's everything you need. But yeah, get them high up, pointing down a bit, and make sure on sturdy flooring so as you're jumping around they don't carry the vibration over and judder.

u/latot · 2 pointsr/Vive

I highly recommend these, with these.

The poles extend from floor to ceiling, so you can get the lighthouses high up. And they have a very small footprint compared to tripods, etc. I'm very very happy with them

u/wescotte · 2 pointsr/Vive

Chances are you'll want to angle them down for optimal coverage. You can mount them directly into concrete/brick. Just drill with a masonry bit and use anchors.

However, as another user pointed out if you are putting up shelves and they are wood you could just attach the mounting bracket right to the shelving or purchase a clamp mount like this, this or this. The bolt size is a 1/4 20 which is the standard for consumer cameras tripod mounts so you can find tons of mounting options out there.

If you search a bit you can find tons of mounting alternative threads like this.

u/JBoozehound · 3 pointsr/Vive

From what I've heard, even if you do get them they are very uncomfortable to wear. Lot of people said theirs went straight in the trash so it might be $27 down the drain anyways. Could try to cancel via email I guess and hope they refund you.

EDIT: If you're looking for a cheaper alternative option to get your eyes closer to the lenses, a sleep mask might be a decent option. Just have to cut the eye holes out, they stick to the headset pretty well on their own. Here's a few options, I've tried all 3 and the first one listed was my favorite but note that it's pretty similar in width as the standard foam ones that come shipped with the headset, but it's a decent option if you need a replacement until official accessories are up for sale. Also the last 2 listed are almost identical:

Also gorilla pod knock offs are cheap as from hong kong

u/xamomax · 3 pointsr/Vive

I also have Vive + Skype + Logitech camera (I think the same model as you).

What I found is that it was intermittently causing conflicts. The best fix was to unplug the Logitech when using Vive, and unplug the Vive USB when using the Logitech.

If you don't want to do that, then what I have found to be helpful, but not a perfect fix, is to make sure the two devices are on separate USB host controllers (So if Vive is on your front ports, put the camera on your back ports). This seemed to make things more reliable for me, but I would still have some random issues.

Another item that seemed to make it more reliable to me, though also not a complete fix, was to install an additional USB card to free up USB resources. With USB 3.0, it's easy to run out of USB resources, which will typically result in a momentary message from Windows when a USB device is first plugged in (And you may not see that message in time if you are bent over trying to see your ports). That can cause some USB devices to misbehave. I bought and installed this USB card, and have not had an issue since. (Using a USB hub did NOT fix such issues.)

Bluetooth used to work to turn mine off, but stopped working at some point.

I bought a pair of these cables to extend the power cables for my lighthouses since they were too far away from any power outlets. (At first I used battery packs, but those proved to be flaky).

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B018RW057K

What I would REALLY like is something like the JacobsParts Manual Inline DC Power Switch for the Lighthouses, rather than for the HMD power line, that way I can go and flip the switches rather than unplugging them every time I'm done. I use those remote power switches for other things in the house and I'd rather not have overlapping signals.

Even better, they're a perfect fit if you modify them to be directly velcro'd to your HMD:

u/sirsnafu · 3 pointsr/Vive

I initially thought of going with that option, however once I considered moving my setup out to the living room, which has vaulted ceilings, I opted to try these photography tripods instead.

Now I do not have to worry about slamming into my ceiling, and if I want to, I can set up in an area that does not have lower ceilings like a convention center or meeting room.

I also got a pair of swivel camera mounts like so which allows me full mobility.

I got this one for use with my HD558s. I'm then running a 30 ft long headphone extension (15ft from computer to link box, 15 ft for Vive cable) back to a Behringer headphone amp and then a DAC. I also have other 15 ft extensions (DisplayPort, USB, power) from the link box back to my PC.

The end result? 30 ft of Vive leash, headphone cable is cable-wrapped back to a proper headphone amp and DAC. No plugging/unplugging, and good sound quality to boot.

Granted, take everything I just said above with the understanding that I don't have a Vive yet, and it might work great...or not!

Like others, I've had the best success about doorway-height. Maybe about 6-8ft looking downwards. I have a pair of flash stands from doing photography, but you could pick up a cheap set of those that are at least 6ft

I also have mini clamps that I attach to the top of the door or to the stairs balusters when I'm downstairs:

  • Clamps like this
  • Or like this

If you are really tight on space and cant use the flash stands, look into a pair of these, they are heavy-duty tension rods that go up to 12'.

I don't think the thickness is the problem, they just aren't secured at the ends well enough.

As thin as that cord is, would probably be strong enough to hold a person if it was clamped at the end properly. At least, I've never seen an image with the cord itself failing, always the plastic housing letting it go.

I invested in a cheap but 5 star reviewed pack of lanyards designed to hold expensive cameras. The cord is the same as HTC's. really thin, but nobody dropped a camera yet. :)

The Oculus Touch setup is super easy: put both cameras on your desk and you're good to go.

Just to compare, it's going to take you at least 3 weeks to reach the bottom of the lunar cave where the rune sword sleeps on the chaos throne. I know the Vive installation guide claims you don't need to use the rune sword to slay the griffin and acquire the forgotten king's thorned crown from its ichorous stomach, but then you tend to get occlusion around floor level near the lighthouses. In a pinch you could probably also angle them with a thin book or some ball head tripod mounts.

You have some options.

If you're ok with drilling some holes in the wall, it should have some mounting brackets for the lighthouses in the box.

A good howto with youtube video here:
https://www.vive.com/us/support/howto/720442.html

You can use cargo poles, or contractor poles for a more permanent installation, if you don't want to put holes in walls but don't want to take them up or down.

https://www.amazon.com/FastCap-Support-System-144-Inches-3HAND5/dp/B000067S12/

Then just find the right photography mounts to clamp to them. The lighthouses have regular 1/4" threading, so you can use basically any standard camera mount.

https://www.amazon.com/NEEWER%C2%AE-Multi-function-standard-Digital-cameras/dp/B00AMXMV3O/

I use these clamps - they rock and they're $10 each, so $20 total.

If you don't mind doing the room setup every time you move them, you could put them on flash stands if you weighted the base down properly and your floor doesn't move too much.

OP, here is a link to the HDMI and USB cable I'm using. Both are 30 feet and work with 100% functionality.

For the USB cable, make sure you also buy the power cable that it requires.

ETA: I have these cables plugged into my computer, and then the link box, followed by the 3-1 cable from vive for a total of 50' of cable between my PC and my HMD.

Any Inateck ones are supposed to do the trick from what I've read, like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00FPIMICA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_XctBxbNEB7CGZ

Im using stand similar to these for the lighthouses.

These clips are also solid if you have something appropriate to clip them to.

Grats dude!

u/Hyperman360 · 1 pointr/Vive

Yeah this is the cable, should work since it's DP 1.2 compatible. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00C7RJQPY

u/stelewi · 4 pointsr/Vive

I wouldn't recommend it. Like someone else said, they vibrate a little due to the motor inside.

could you use camera clamps or clips instead of balancing them?

something like this; https://www.amazon.co.uk/Neewer-Multi-Function-Spring-Holder-Camera-x/dp/B00AMXMV3O/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1484480134&sr=8-12&keywords=slr+camera+clamp

Hey, just to let you know, I think this is a problem with the ASUS Z710 series, as I have gone down the same road as you, and someone else mentioned also having the same problems with a Z710 series board. I know it isn't the Vive because it works with no issue on another box in the exact same room and set up. I'm thinking there is something with their USB and talking to the Link Box, and I'm hoping I can find something in the BIOS to tweak. I'd say hold onto it, and if you are really at the end of your rope, buy a different MB. I'll let you know if I figure anything out. EDIT: Also try uninstalling the Asus AI Suite if you have it installed, and Corsair Link...others said this helped, though it did not for me.

EDIT: Looks like a common solution is to get a USB PCIe card which uses a different USB host controller, as the ASMedia USB host controller on the asus Z170 boards is crap, and buggy. This is the recommended one.

If you need length, This 10 meter works well and can be wall powered if your usb port is not powerful enough.

Or if you want to get your price tag higher for you list, maybe [this] (https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-10m-Active-Extension-Cable/dp/B007B61I2K) one

Sennheisers are a very solid choice. I'm going to use my Senn HD 598s with my headset. You'll need to get a short cable with a 1/8" jack, though. The 518s only come with a 10' long cable with a 1/4" jack, and 1/4" to 1/8" adapters are enormous.

This is the reason I didn't buy a pair of Sennheisers. Shortest cable I could find to work with them is 4 ft. Although I suppose if you keep it coiled it won't be horrendous.

I can't seem to get my Display Port cable working. It's a DP to mDP as it says and shows in the setup instructions (this cable is not provided). My 980Ti has 3 display ports, one HDMI and a DVI output. I'd like to be able to mirror to the TV via HDMI if it's possible.

I bought this , but no matter what settings I adjust in the SteamVR settings menu, nothing seems to work when I try to connect it via display port. So for some reason it's either not sending a signal to the head unit or the display port is not sending a signal to the break away box.

It works fine if I use HDMI to the breakaway box though.

Any suggestions?

I have an identical looking USB cable, using it with the included USB cord and then the breakout box with no issue.

Here is my cable: BlueRigger USB 2.0 Type A Male to A Female Active Extension / Repeater Cable - 32 Feet (10M) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005LJKEXS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_xKrqxbCX6E7M4

I bought some sleep masks from amazon, and cut them into the shape of the face foam. They stick to the existing velcro on the vive

http://www.amazon.com/USpicy-Mask-Plugs-Travel-Pouch/dp/B013S9CPDE

http://www.amazon.com/Roybens-Stereo-Lightweight-Comfortable-Adjustable/dp/B0142TUPE0

why? a few reasons. thinner sleep masks allow for a slightly higher FOV due to the lenses being closer to your eyes. However I found it a bit uncomfortable on my nose so I use the slightly thicker 'memory foam' one

another reason is I now have several face 'foams' so I can swap them out / wash them as needed when sharing the vive or when its sweaty

final reason is comfort - I find the standard foam gets scratchy/uncomfortable on my face while I don't seem to have that problem with the memory foam sleep mask. different material, overly-sensitive skin, etc.

I already had a shelf, and a door that always stays open, so I got a pair of these

u/Kreffeso · 1 pointr/Vive

I ordered this one and should have it tomorrow. I saw in the reviews for it that people have used it with the vive.

Edit: I found this in an old thread. 50' cables

u/HulkTogan · 1 pointr/Vive

I use mini display port (link box) to display port (graphics card). Works for me.

u/David_ESM · 2 pointsr/Vive

For every 5m of cable you should use another link box (extension box). I have the business edition which came with an extra link box. Can run 5m cables to the link box, 5m cables to another link box, then the 3 in 1 to the headset.

Currently am running the Vive in a spare bedroom next to our office. Have 0 issues with the setup.

Edit: The cables I am using:

HDMI

USB

Not directly to your issue, but I mounted my front facing light house with this and like it allot as I can clip it to my screen.

Tripod Camera Clip Clamp Flash Reflector Holder Mount for Studio Backdrop Camera

I picked up two of these clamps for my living room as more of a temporary mount. Planning on clamping them to the curtain pole, wall light or maybe on a door. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00MR0VPOQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1459112857&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=camera+mount+clamp&dpPl=1&dpID=41o38CfsL6L&ref=plSrch

You only need to turn off base station "B". "C" will turn off automatically when "B" isn't visible.

The headset should turn off automatically after a few minutes. It has a proximity sensor that can tell if it's in use.

I use that on the "B" lighthouse. When that one goes off, "C" follows suit a few moments later.

I went with this pairing. I have wood floors and the lighthouses sway SLIGHTLY when I walk within a couple feet of them, however, I don't notice any tracking issues.

Really convenient for travel demoing and quick cleanup at home.
