A 4-16x50 scope translates thusly:

"4-16": Magnification range. Magnification is adjustable from x4 power to x16 power.

"50": The diameter of the forward most lens.

Lens Size As you magnify, less light is being transmitted through your lens, so while your picture might seem bright and normal on x4 magnification, your x16 magnification might look kind of gray scale and dark. Best way of fixing this: Make the forward most lens bigger to gather more light. Pros: You can see in low light and better at long magnifications. Cons: Adds a lot of weight.

Tube Size There are usually two sizes you'll see—1" (small and light), and 30mm (bigger and heavier). While the 30mm tube is heavier, it does transmit more light, and will also allow more space for windage and elevation adjustments. Pros for 30mm: Extreme long range adjustments, better light transmission at night and at high magnification. Cons for 30mm: Adds a lot of weight, especially if you're never shooting beyond x12 magnification, or at night, or at 400+ yds.

Gas Purging Most scopes are nitrogen filled. Nitrogen differs in weight to Oxygen, so the seals on the scope are more secure, which means less moisture in the scope, which means less fogging. A step up is to use Argon or other treatments that do even better. While a Vortex Crossfire and a Vortex Diamondback might be similar in price, the Diamondback is argon purged, and has better light transmission and seals.

Glass Coatings Think of glasses lenses. If you don't get anti reflective coatings, light bounces off the lenses, which means less light gets through—which is a big deal at x16 magnification. The better the coatings, the more light gets through. Naturally, the better the coatings, the more expensive the scope.

Glass Quality Diamonds have a clarity scale. The clearer the crystal, the more light gets reflected in the facets. Similarly, not all glass is made on the same level. High end scopes will use glass that is clear as they can manage. Getting the impurities out of the glass means more processes, which means more money.

What I personally would want in an AR scope in your application range:

  • 4-12x44. Max range on an AR is close to 500yds. If I were doing 1000yds with a .300 Win Mag, I'd go with a 6-18x55 or something similar.

  • 1" tube. If my magnification is only to x12, and I have at least 40mm forward lens, I should get enough light transmission as it is. Plus, it will be light. The AR15 was made to be light. Keep it that way.

A couple of suggestions along that range:

First place: Vortex Viper 3-9x40, $264.90

Second place: Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40, $164.99

I love my TLR1-HL, plus you can buy it with a remote switch included or by itself.

The thing I like best is that if you have an M-LOK handguard, you can drill out the mounting holes of the switch (very carefully) and then use M-LOK screws and mount it directly to your handguard. As a result, you don't have to use the mounting clips, and it's perfectly flush.

I love the operation - push to turn on, tap twice and it goes to strobe mode. It's super intuitive and easy to use. And it's as bright as the sun. Uses standard CR123 batteries. Can't go wrong.

u/patheticguy12 · 3 pointsr/ar15

I found your charging handle for almost $10 cheaper. You could cut the cost of the charging handle significantly by getting a one-handed one. I used the exact same lower build kit for my first AR. The lower build kit does not come with any tools. You're going to need some tools, such as a Castle Nut Wrench and a punch set

This is kind of optional, but you're going to need a spacer if you want to use iron sights (or else the iron sights will be blocked by the red dot sight. The spacer also helps a great deal is making it more comfortable, so your head isn't awkwardly tilted, obviously this will depend on your eye height.

Don't get discouraged if this seems confusing, if all else fails, watch an ar15 building tutorial and everything will be much clearer. Here's another tutorial. Good luck.

Adding onto what others have said. (Just a disclaimer I've only built 5 ARs so far so I dont know if some of the cheapo stuff is as durable as the fancy stuff that others are recommending.)

I really like this armourer's wrench since the 1/2" drive is so close to the castle and barrel nut adapter. Makes getting the correct torque easier IMO. Usually you only need the castle nut and flash hider adapters for AR builds since most aftermarket handgaurds come with proprietary barrel nut wrenches.

A decent set of roll pin punches will help you install both the upper and lower. I like this cause it also comes with a nylon (i think its nylon) end to keep from messing up your upper/lower finish.

Also, this is worth its weight in gold. It helps you install things like the roll pin that goes in the gas tube, bolt catch, trigger gaurd, and forward assist without the need of those fancy $50 tools.

And lastly I would definitely get a magpul Bev block and a bench vise. I got a cheapo one from amazon and its worked fine.

u/Cenomaniac · 2 pointsr/ar15

First buy some pin punches, like Grace or Tekton (avoid going cheap, they always break).

Then of course a proper hammer

Then some starter punches

Then some finishing punches (I know they say starter but they're better for finishing)

Yes, it costs money, but they pay for themselves. Also you don't have to dick around with taping things off as much if you have proper tools. The brass punches and the pin capturing starter punches help IMMENSELY in this area.

Holosun, Vortex, and Sig make fantastic budget red dots. Holosun is my personal favorite. Beware of cheaper red dots from NC Star, Sightmark, and TruGlo. They’re all Chinese garbage that will break after a few rounds with a rifle. They are only good for airsoft. You might think you’re saving money with a cheap red dot, but one it breaks you’ll have to spend another $100 for a good dot that actually works. DO NOT BUY THIS RED DOT. https://imgur.com/gallery/Jb7fl2Q it’s very popular in video games but it sucks IRL.

Here are some good budget red dots.

Vortex SPARC AR

Or

Primary Arms Advanced Micro Dot

Or

HOLOSUN HS403B

All are good, but for the prices the Primary Arms or Holosun are a better bet due to the 50k hours battery life.

Then buy a lightweight magnifier with QD mount so you can either leave it on our take it off depending on your current setup or shooting preference.

That's all pretty much in the $300 range for both the dot and the magnifier.

u/j-mt · 2 pointsr/ar15

Are you going to intentionally use this rifle to defend yourself? If so, you're looking at about $150 minimum for a RDS (IMO). My personal recommendation is the Vortex Sparc AR or Sparc II. Others like the Holosuns, but I don't have experience with them.

That said, if the worst thing that happens is a range trip cut short, you can grab a Fieldsport RDS and UTG riser from Amazon for about $30.

https://www.amazon.com/Field-Sport-Green-Micro-Sight/dp/B00D4AYBR6/ref=sr_1_6?s=sports-and-fitness&ie=UTF8&qid=1494339103&sr=1-6&keywords=Red+dot

The Fieldsport is the best cheap plinker optic I've used (I bought one to see what the fuss was about). I still wouldn't trust my life to it, but I wouldn't hesitate to throw it on a budget rifle.

To boot, if you'll catch a set of Magpul MBUS on sale for about $60, you can have a surprisingly reasonable setup for around $100. And if the dot ever failed, you'd have a quality set of backup sights to use.

Add: I confused your OP with another and just saw you looking for a scope. My thoughts still stand on the RDS.

The Bushnell Drop Zone gets a fair amount of love. But keep in mind, you'll be spending at least another $30 (preferably more like $60+) on a scope mount.

If you prefer crosshairs to red dots and aren't looking for magnification, Vortex makes a 1x scope meant for muzzleloaders. I'm running one on my 7.62x39 AR and really like it. To boot, you can find them for around $60 and they're every bit as quality as their other Crossfire II optics. You'll still need a mount, though. Aero has their ultralight offsets on sale for around $60. That's the way I'd go for any scope you end up with. The Vortex offset mount I picked up is friggin' heavy.

Get one of these: Magpul Industries M-LOK 11 or 1 O'clock Position Polymer Offset Light/Optic Mount https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RU12NG6

It’s super easy to mount and I really like the position the light attaches.

u/Crow486 · 3 pointsr/ar15

I've pretty much got the same setup, the stupid $14 QD sling adapter for that stock is nice with an mlok QD sling adapter. That or a QD buffer plate to use with a QD sling. Comes off in one second and stays low profile. This sling is a $13 copy of the magpul ms1, feel free to spend the $50 if you like. It quick adjusts to you can sling it on and tighten it up with one hand while wearing it.

u/Number1AbeLincolnFan · 8 pointsr/ar15

This might be excessive, but I wanted to be thorough so you can see what all is out there. I am having trouble thinking of anything that the following tools can't do, in terms of AR building and maintenance. This is basically my setup at home, though some.of the brands and whatnot are different.

I am operating under the assumption that you already have some basic hand tools in addition to the torque wrench.

The only things you absolutely need are roll pin punches and an armorer's wrench and some basic hand tools like Allen wrenches, screwdrivers, needlenose pliers and so on. The rest just expedite the process and help solve weird issues that may come up.

The cheapest I'd probably go is a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40...you can get it for $99 in Amazon.

I have this scope on one of my ARs with a Burris PEPR mount, was ringing steel easily out to 300. Use their BDC app, or for me, I used the Strelok app to figure out my holds at different magnifications and ammo types.

Nikon glass is great, for the price, you really can't go wrong.

u/gwhunter280 · 1 pointr/ar15

Wheeler stuff is okay for one or two builds, but if you plan on tools lasting I would buy them separately. I bought wheeler initially and now have 8 ar's and have re-purchased all tools because the wheeler stuff doesn't last. I like the tapco intrafuse wrench because it has the necessary bottle opener, roll pin punches, plastic/metal hammer, allen keys, PRI upper block, pro mag lower block and if you have a free float handguard I use this spanner.

Edit: On my armalite ar-10t, the FF handguard requires a strap wrench so keep that in mind if you plan to deal with those.

Streamlight railmount 2

The surefire scouts are nice but they're a rip off. I've used both, and have the streamlight on my rifle now. It's 625 lumens and comes with everything needed to mount it to a pic rail with a tape switch. The surefire doesn't come with a switch OR tail cap, they bang you for both of them separately

Pair that with the magpul offset mount which screws directly into the mounting hardware on the streamlight with two screws and mounts directly to your mlok rail and you have an awesome light for $120

I zeroed it in at 50 yards. And after I got used to it, my groupings were getting pretty solid.

for just a little more money you could have a nikon prostaff BDC, they come in a few different magnifications. then if you want it on a different caliber later you are a little better off. I have one and love it, and looking at the reviews so do a bunch of other people.

Thanks for your suggestions guys, was leaning towards a soft bag, but the more I think about it a hard case would probably be a better idea because I will also use it for storage at home..I have handguns for self defense so not really worried about getting to it quickly. Anyways, I was looking at this flambaeu case, it's cheaper than plano but I don't know much about it. Anyone have an experience with this brand?

u/NAP51DMustang · 1 pointr/ar15

got this kit on PSA on sale a while back, VERY useful. I think all the bits separate would run you ~125 so def a good buy. Also these are good.

u/turnoffable · 1 pointr/ar15

You'll need a magnifier on a mount that matches the height of the RDS which will need to be placed on a riser (it's too short right now).

For example, if you get the mid rise UTG mount for the TRS-25 it will be at co-witness height. Now you'll need to find a magnifier mount that works with (or comes with) that is also co-witness height.

1/3 co-witness seems to be more popular with the magnifier mounts. My swag for that is that typically the t1 mount (e.g. aimpoint style) mount that is more popular is 1/3 co-witness.

With that said.. I run a Samson flip mount with my Primary Arms 3x Gen IV LER magnifier behind a holosun hs503g using an absolute co-witness American Defense mount. Before the hosolun I ran that magnifier/mount with a TRS-25. It worked just fine and I even used it in some 2 gun matches. I wanted the holosun 503g since I wanted gradients/dots for my hold over at > 200 yards.

The UTG lighter (not cheaper) UTG mount that will set the TRS-25 to co-witness height is .83" tall (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CKYYH16)

Or a entry vortex either the crossfire 2 or the diamondback would be safe buys until you decide what you like. Then you can anti up for something better.

Know of any USGI style slings that come with "modern" hardware? I'm looking around, and I like the cheap cost and functionality of the basic USGI sling, but I'd have to replace the clips with QD points, which are what I want to use. I can't tell if something like this cheap magpul knockoff would work as a loop, but it comes with the hardware I need.

Any ideas?

u/bcphotog · 4 pointsr/ar15

> Hmm don't really have a budget. I guess I mean best bang for your buck.

Gotcha, u/JakesGunReviews mentioned the SF 6P-series light, that's what i was going to say. Generally decent 'budget' weapon lights for rifles don't have pressure switches, they usually have tail-caps you click to operate.

If you wanted to knock out two birds with one stone, you could always get a Streamlight TLR-1 with the long gun kit. You could use it for your AR and your pistol if you wanted.

I'm partial to a 300 Series Light from Arisaka Defense + a Surefire SR07 pressure switch. I have two of them, and i love them, they're durable little fuckers.

The best/cheapest red dot for an AR is probably the Bushnell trs-25, I got mine for $52 on sale. That said the Fieldsport is nearly identical and only $20 on Amazon (check out the enthusiastic YouTube reviews). On a high riser ($10) either one will absolute co-witness with iron sights, which you don't have but it also means the scopes high enough for a decent cheek weld.

I prefer a larger viewport though so my favorite is this 32mm one

Read your comment on getting cheap irons. If you don’t mind all metal flip ups, they’re spring loaded and have last me over a year with no issues, I prefer these over MBUS and they’re about $30 for a set.

I use an Aimpoint PRO. It's moderately pricey, but I will never need another red dot.

If you're looking for a red dot, Primary Arms makes affordable imitations of the Aimpoint. Primary Arms red dot with AR-15 riser and mount will run about $80.

If you're wanting a scope, the Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 is normally $150 and can sometimes be found for $120.

I have been told several times that this is the same thing as Dillo Dust.

Primary Arms MD-RGBII + Primary Arms Micro Dot Base Mount = ~$120

Sig Sauer Romeo5 (OOS online but sold in-store and can still be found for $129 online) = ~$120 - $129

Bushnell Trophy TRS-25 + .83 Height Riser = ~$64

You can also wait for the Memorial Day sales.

I have a couple streamlight PollyTac lights that have worked well for me. The downside of the polymer body is that if you over tighten the mount the light can be stuck in the "on" position until you lossen it a little. https://www.amazon.com/Streamlight-88850-PolyTac-Flashlight-Batteries/dp/B001S0IN46/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1473949936&sr=8-16&keywords=protac

If I was do do-over I would get one of the aluminum ProTac lights for $10 more. I think they are the same diameter. https://www.amazon.com/Streamlight-88031-Tactical-Flashlight-Batteries/dp/B00396S1Q2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1473949936&sr=8-1&keywords=protac

Maybe get a pic rail brass catcher like this one. If you leave the zipper open, the brass will just drop on the ground right in front of you.

I got a Surefire G2X Pro with this tailcap and this mount for the tape switch. So far it's been a solid setup.

Edit: Forgot to mention I mount the light with one of these and a V block & rings

>Is the polytac a weapons light?

Yes it's safe. I own and use one on my rifle.

>I don't think it's recoil safe.

The lens is "Unbreakable polycarbonate with scratch-resistant coating" and the light source is "C4®LED technology, impervious to shock with a 50,000 hour lifetime." [Source - Polytac Fact Sheet from Streamlight.com]

It's also marketed as a weapons light by Streamlight themselves (scroll down to see ad on that link where Streamlight advertises it as a weapons light), and commonly used as a weapons light by people in the firearms community. One guy even shot over 500 rounds of 12 gauge buck with his Polytac and it's still running just fine.

I ordered these and haven't had any issues. I like having snap caps around because I can go through the entire process of shooting and cycling a round. The only thing you can't check is that the gas block puts enough gas backwards to cycle the BCG.

If you don't, you can't properly test magazines, bolt catch, or ejector. And you can't really run through drills of swapping mags and releasing the bolt quickly without having live rounds in the gun, which doesnt allow for much home practice. It's just nice to be able to fully simulate the functioning of the gun without dealing with live rounds. Plus they're cheap.

I'm a novice, so I might be stupidly overlooking stuff, but that's just my reasoning.

There is a couple torture tested of this red dot on YouTube and they beat the shit out of it and it kept running.

Edit: wrong link, fixing now.

Still looking for a great buy on a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x and eventually 9" YHM handguard and YHM Resonator can. Will also be adding a Streamlight Protac HL-x light before long

First I'll be rattlecanning it though. Quick question: Should I test fire first, or go ahead and spray it while there's no oil on it?

> Is there any other way to do this without using a live round.

Yes, they're called snap caps.

> Been thinking about pulling a 223 apart and dumping the powder and setting off just the primer and putting the bullet back into the now dead casing so practice use.

That could work, but the problem is it still looks like a regular round which can lead to complacency (i.e. you get used to seeing brass in there, and you get complacent one day and forget to check). If you do this, paint it.

u/ProjectDirectory · 2 pointsr/ar15

I personally would never chamber a live round unless I was planning on shooting that round. Thus I use snap caps for checking the action or for dry fire practice. The risk of a slam fire is quite small, but it is a real risk and thus should be avoided. I keep the snap caps loaded in a magazine that I've added masking tape across and marked "PRACTICE". I keep the practice magazine separate from my ammo, and other loaded magazines.
