We only buy non-pourous, body safe toys, especially for anal play. I.e. 100% medical grade silicone, borosilicate glass, and now stainless steel. We always liked the look of those jeweled stainless steel plugs, plus they are pretty small, so they work well for more extended use. Glass is nice too, but it can sometimes stick just a tiny bit, and silicone, while awesome for it's cleanliness and soft rigidity, can get really sticky if you don't reapply lube regularly. Small stainless steel guys wont chaff even after the water based lube dries out a bit.
As far as stainless steel plugs go, JT's Stockroom sells what look like really nice ones, but they are very expensive. We gambled and bought some cheaper ones off Amazon, and yes, you get both a big one AND a smaller one for that price.
They ship from china, but came very fast. They are of pretty great quality, but I doubt there're as nice as the JT ones; there are very small imperfections in places, but nothing that would ever be a problem in use or appearance. Considering their price, I'm assuming the nice JT Stockroom ones have actual Swarovski crystals, whereas these are just fake plastic jewels, but they still look very nice, honestly. They have plenty of weight, are really well sized for extended use, and priced very well compared to similar plugs on the market. They came with individual felt bags and where double wrapped in paper. Overall we are very happy with the quality for the price!
However, we picked those green ones because they were the cheapest on amazon (the price shifts around randomly it seems, the red ones are cheapest now), but it appears you don't get to pick the colors, either that or they just really screwed up my order. We got a small black one and large blue one, which actually ended up better since those were our preferred colors! So if you're okay getting a surprise batch, I'd highly recommend them.
If you are just starting out, I would shoot for something a bit smaller than 'Doc Johnson Classic Large' with a 3 inch diameter. A 3 inch diameter is pretty advanced, and probably falls into the 'gaper' category. Not my cup of tea. Something in the 1.25-1.50 is a solid starter. Something like the 'Anal Trainer Set' (http://www.amazon.com/x/dp/B003JI4Q50/) would be a cheap 'what size feels right'. These aren't very high quality, probably wont last long, but will help you find the right size toy investment.
Amazon ships (Prime) from their factory. The item will have a black covering around it. Amazon will keep your sex toy purchase on file forever though. A bit awkward in my opinion. I've bought from extremerestraints and edenfantasy and both were in discrete packages with a discrete return address. Never received a catalog or anything physical from them afterwards.
The njoy line is expensive (http://www.njoytoys.com/products/pureplugs.php) but well regarded around here. My personal favorite.
My last GF loved the Njoy plug. It was comfortable enough for her to wear 24/7 and felt really good inside her.....for both of us. :)

I've found that the medium size Njoy plug worked best with my subs. Start by working up to wearing it for an hour. Then slowly extend the time from there. Get used to wearing the lube for 8 hours or so before you try wearing it go to sleep. You need to keep some lube with you at all times. Apply lube periodically and any time you feel the plug start to stick or pull. If the plug becomes uncomfortable remove it.
