First I've heard of it but cheers for making the switch.
I suggest going to a Verizon store to find out exactly how much it will cost to break contact now and how much it will go down every month. For my parents plan, they're saving upwards of $140 every month by switching to T-Mobile and don't worry about limits. If I were in your shoes, I'd probably by a bunch of ~$100 phones, switch to a well covering contact-free carrier (T-Mobile in my case) and eBay the old phones ASAP.

The Nokia 521 is a steal of a deal at $95 if you're OK with a windows phone. Dual core 1ghz, 0.5/8gb, 5mp camera w/o flash, great build quality, under $100- pretty sweet deal really. http://www.amazon.com/Nokia-Lumia-521-T-Mobile/dp/B00COYOAYW
Now if only I were smart enough to learn how to install android on one.
