I'm gonna chime in here and suggest you might skip the Black Ink kit. There's tons of different options for inking artwork in black in all sorts of price ranges and it's a technique that doesn't really capture what is unique about Copic style marker art. Don't get me wrong, you are probably going to want a black Copic, but less for inking outlines and more for filling in large black areas that you have already inked.
My suggestion for what you should get? Honestly no matter what you get you are going to want more soon lol. $80 is going can get you a set of 12, this is as good a place to start as any:
https://www.amazon.com/Copic-Marker-12-Piece-Sketch-Basic/dp/B000MRR3GU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1479745724&sr=8-2&keywords=copic

That will give you a good sense of how the markers behave and blend, markers that are close in number blend well into one another.

On that note if you're coming up it's important to understand the numbering system that Copics use. It's simple and you can check it out here:
https://imaginationinternationalinc.com/copic/101/copic-color-theory/

Last piece of advice is don't go too dark with your first set (colours ending in 8 or 9) as they are so dark they almost look black and it makes them tough to blend. I made this mistake thinking I wanted really intense tones but I hardly use those markers at all.

Have fun out there!

Oh! One more thing... I'm not sure where you live, but Michaels in Canada always has 40 or 50% off coupons online so that could help a lot if you have the same where you live.

If she's just starting out, the ciaos would be great for her. Depending on how much you're willing to spend, they come in sets of 12-72, or you can purchase them separately as well. They are refillable and have replaceable nibs and the same nibs as the sketch, they're just a little cheaper because they hold less ink and come in less colors. Even if she becomes a professional artist, she'll still be able to use these and weave sketch ones into her set.

I've had great luck with this particular hammermill paper. It's basically bulk cardstock, just a little thinner. Doesn't bleed or soak up too much marker. Alternatively, get card stock. Little pricier and won't make that much of a difference though.

Lately I've had a lot of luck with the Crescent Rendr paper, since it doesn't bleed. I've tried all sorts of papers and Crescent Rendr is most definitely my favorite!

Next to that I really like using a moleskine, or the standard copic marker pad! Both tend to bleed though.

Copic multiliner pens are designed for use with Copic Markers, so you can give them a try.

I like to use Pentel pens, and find that the Pentel brush pens (not the water based ink ones, I haven't tested them) work well with Copic markers after you let the ink dry a bit. Here's an example on Amazon:

And here is an example of what I colored with it to demonstrate that it holds up (if you'll forgive a little boasting):

The Pentel Hybrid Technica holds up with minimal smearing as well if you like gel pens (here's a pack of 12, though you can get them for $3-4 each at an art store):

If you are looking for ink you can dip into with a nib, I am not sure what works. I used india ink and learned the hard way that does not hold up to copic markers well at all.

I can't exactly tell but from what I see it looks like you are using some thin type of printer paper.? I would try getting some high quality paper like this (is what I use).

This should allow you to:

  1. Layer ink which will reduce streakiness, resulting in a flatter, solid color

  2. Since you have limited colors, allow you to do some shading with more and less ink

Also I think some of the shading is a bit harsh in some areas I think you could try making it a smoother gradient to flow better.

This is a very good paper, I have used it for all my drawings, and I don't recommend buying colored sets of copic markers cause then you might end up with colours that your never going to use, I'd recommend buying them all individually or getting a custom set (I can message you my personal set of colours I use if you'd like!) But If you are going to get a set, I would start out with a gray set of colours, hope this helps!! :)

If you shop on amazon there is bee paper. It is the best price for sure and is meant for copic marker.

u/naus226 · 5 pointsr/copic

Moleskin didn't work well for me and bled through like crazy. I've had the most success with the Bee Paper marker sketchbooks.

I find that the Prismacolor ColErase work very well. I like that they are erasable and the marker glides over it. Not wax based:) The Prismacolor premier pencils are wax based so they do not work well for markers.

Fair warning. 12 marker set of copic sketch at Michael's is $109. http://www.michaels.com/copic-sketch-marker-set-12-color-basic/D037662S.html

Same set on Amazon is Copic Marker 12-Piece Sketch Basic Set https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000MRR3GU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_XnUZzbJRR58NH

If you aren't getting 50% off at Michael's your are getting ripped off.

Never mind, back when I bought my 36 set I paid £100 for it. Currently it's at £150. I apologise, my mistake: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01HH2DCRG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_kLjZBbDEEH07V
