/u/Wreckoning this is the best response i've ever received thank you for being so in depth with your answer. I shoot with a Canon 5D Mark 3 and will eventually be ramping up my video projects. I like to work efficiently and without waiting on technology. Currently i'm thinking about purchasing this from beach camera its on my way home. So i'm guessing i really only need around 327 mb/s to get the speed that i'm looking for since i'm not shooting 4k yet. That's awesome.
Well, you can get a thunderbolt to firewire adaptor or a proper hub but it sounds like you're trying to connect two computers to one drive. Is that right?
If so, you would need to have the drive configured as a server, which may or may not be possible. The easiest thing to do would be to enable file sharing on the first mac pro, and then have the second mac pro connect to the first over the network. It can then access the drive. If the file sizes are large, you will of course need a network with decent speeds.
I’ve got the 2015 13” MBP with 16gb ram. I use this external ssd to hold the media while I’m working on a project. I don’t use proxy files and I’m impressed with the speed of rendering. Granted I’m an amateur with videos rarely longer than 30 minutes and my 4K media is only 8bit, but this set up works great for me. I second the notion to prioritize ram.
This is the one I'm using https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01K7C53K2/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I just bought a Cable Matters USB C Printer Cable (USB C to USB B/USB-C to Printer) in Black 6.6 Feet from amazon. I was hoping connecting it directly from the amp to the Macbook could make it work. Yeah. I made sure that the input for the mic was selected in system preferences/ Audio and in voice recorder. How do you have your's setup?
For 4K footage, you should use a 3 1/2-inch 7200 RPM external drive. These are considerably faster the the smaller "portable" drives. I've had good luck with this series.
Oh my goodness, I spend so much time in the Window menu, I could have sworn I tried that multiple times. Thank you.
And I completely agree about learning the software you use and I did buy and read through a Final Cut Pro book last year. I guess my issue is that I'm a front and back-end web developer/database administrator/web designer/videographer. And my typical 60-hour workweek gives me about three hours to work with FCPX. But I'm ok with that. Right now I'm still fathoming how I missed the obvious answer hiding the event viewer.
30 days is plenty of time to become proficient with Final Cut. As others have said, the versions can be very different, so you would really need to train for the specific version you will be using.
Either way, I would recommend going through the official training book for the version you will be learning - most likely FCP7 or the more recent FCPX
The book for FCPX was printed before a number of big updates, so the info may be a little bit outdated. Also, the basic book doesn't go into multicam editing, or green screen, or any advanced technique; you would need to go through the advanced book to learn those aspects.
An SSD is not recommended for video editing because editing can wear out the drives. It does work, however, and it's fast.
USB 3.0 is fast enough in theory, but you should get one with a fast hard drive in it. The non powered versions that are small like this one, I find sluggish at times. The larger powered ones, like this, should work just fine.
Thunderbolt is by far the fastest and most expensive option. You will literally pay double or more for identical sized drives. With a proper RAID setup, however, you can get several times the speed.
I've done HD editing off of plug in FW800 drives as well without any real issues. Unless you're working with 4K or RAW video, you should be okay with most consumer plug in USB 3 and FW800 drives.
You probably won't be using Final Cut to import footage, but you want something like this:

Once you create what you need you can then edit whatever you captured in Final Cut.
Is this not it?
