This is the best solution I have found. Both PTT's have a "helmet" mounted button that is easy to use while flying (without letting go of the brakes).

Most free flight guys I know use the 2m ham band. You need to be licensed in the US to use these things.

New champion due to price: http://www.amazon.com/BaoFeng-Dual-Band-Improved-Stronger-Enhanced/dp/B00C83AU9S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1395337899&sr=8-1&keywords=baofeng+uv-5r+plus
Most of the PPG folks use FRS radios. Something about the motor itself seems to cause interference on the 2m band.
Great kiting video https://vimeo.com/1301794
also as far as books go. it might be a bit off topic and on the technical side as is actually for sail planes but the early sections on weather and thermalling theory are still spot on for paragliding https://www.amazon.com/Cross-Country-Soaring-Streckensegelflug-Helmut-Reichman/dp/1883813018

I know this doesn't help in the present, but I always have one of these with me when flying these days. Would allow me to send an SOS in areas with no phone coverage with my exact coordinates. Worth considering for anyone in this community.
Flying Off Everest by Dave Costello is a book about these guys.

Where do you find them cheaper?
I really think a Tourniquet should be in every persons kits.
With paragliding the ease at which you can take a fall / have a bad landing and sustain a bad cut is very easy. If you take a bad cut and arent able to stop the bleeding your time window starts to shrink as time ticks on and the only way to stop that is with a Tourniquet.
They are lightweight, don't take up a ton of space and can easily be applied. I personally have 1 in my EDC bag, 2 in my car, a few at home and 2 in the kit I am putting together for paramotoring.
One bad fall or cut in any sort of difficult area for rescue to get to could be the difference between life and death and that TQ will buy you a lot of time if you need it.
I would only recommend one brand and that is CAT and you can get them for around $30.00.
DO NOT. I REPEAT DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE BUY A KNOCK OFF OF THIS PRODUCT.
Just pay the 30 bucks and be happy you have a quality product that will save your life.
CAT Combat Application Tourniquet - GEN 7
How to properly apply a Tourniquet
I have looked a bit into this topic as I am fascinated with medical related topics and one of the industry leaders created an "Adventure Medkit" that is very streamline. Here is what they had in there to get an idea of what medical professionals are considering.
1 x Minor Aid Pouch (MAP) with various sized bandages
1 x Hyfin Compact Vented Chest Seals
1 x Nitrile Gloves
1 x QuikClot Bleeding Control Dressing 12’
1 x H&H Mini Compression Bandage
1 x Duct Tape 6’
2 x Mylar Blanket
1 x CAT Tourniquet
You can find more info here about that kit.
