I'm really looking forward to "When Marnie Was There" since I loved "Only Yesterday", "From Up On Poppy Hill", and all the slice-of-life elements of "Whisper of the Heart". I know from experience that some adolescent friendships are better defined purely as relationships because they blur the lines between romance, affection, and companionship.

For those of you interested in the book, it's being republished in the beginning of 2015, which is nice because copies of the book have gone for some very strange prices on the market since the movie was announced.

Priscilla Ahn's series of blog posts about the movie and meeting Miyazaki were very sweet. I can't wait to see the film and will enjoy and support whatever creative direction Ghibli decides to take.

Have you found additional details for the timing of the translator change at Viz? I think the publication and localisation history for Nausicaä around the world is fascinating.

> The (second) translator's perspective.

A four star review with that header was posted on Amazon, on October 10, 2003, for an earlier English edition, titled "Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind". The reviewer continued:

> "I translated the last 3/7 of this series, and in nine years of translating about 5000 pages of manga, this was the best and most important title I worked on. If you go way back to the earliest reviews here (1998), you'll find some very nice comments by Toren Smith about my translation, but I must say Toren and Dana's was a hard act to follow. They did an excellent job on the first 4/7, and my biggest challenge was to maintain both their tone and their level of quality. [...]"

and went on quite a bit longer. The whole review is an illuminating read, too.

Don't know if you've found your way there but Rachel Thorn offers fascinating perspectives, retrospectives, on Nausicaä, on translations, on her Twitter account, among other places.

I purchased all my books on iTunes, since it was easier for me. But I can link them, and you can go from there :)
When Marnie Was There
#1 A Wizard of Earthsea
#2 The Tombs of Atuan
#3 The Farthest Shore
#4 Tehanu
#5 The Other Wind
Tales from Earthsea
Howl's Moving Castle Kindle that includes the trilogy for $2 or Howl's Moving Castle physical
Castle in the Air
House of Many Ways
And going to cheat and link the complete set of The Borrowers, since it's pretty cheap.
Honestly, if you are looking to purchase elsewhere, the authors are really all you need to make sure you are getting the correct books.

Is it this?

I'd love to see pictures to :)

Not sure. I don't have it myself, but in my research I found that was where it was at. It might also be on one of the Japanese R2 DVDs.

EDIT: My best guess is this one, as there are English subs listed, and it matches with the Wikipedia listing for it being released by Buena Vista.

>one before Disney that Streamline Pictures did that apparently no one seems to have dumped anywhere for preservation

It's available everywhere in the anime torrenting community. Look for the 1080p BluRay release by REVO.

>Does anyone know where I can obtain the original Disney one?

The 1997-cut version still has its DVD sold on Amazon. $18.97 for Used. Check your local library catalogue for it, its UPC is 786936175226 to make sure it's this 2003 DVD release. It won't have Disney written anywhere because Buena Vista Home Entertainment released it. They are a subsidiary of Disney but are a separate legal entity. The 2010 release was actually with Disney directly.

If you visit the anime torrenting community the 1997 dub is available on the DVD release by Niizk.

Here is the link for Ponyo on Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0032YNDA0/ref=ox_ya_os_product_refresh_T1 as you can see the picture does have a slipcover on top of the blu-ray cover.

Nice to see some of the lesser-known ones here. I still have a hard time finding Omohide Poro Poro on DVD. There does not seem to be much demand for it. Amazon says "Sign up to be notified when this item becomes available."

Formatting might be slightly different, but I believe this has the same content:

Spirited Away

Kiki's Delivery Service

Totoro

Nausicaa

I think part of that problem is that new animators working primarily in CG aren't being taught the motion fundamentals (weight, squash and bounce, etc) that 2D animators had to learn back in the day. This was a big reason for Richard Williams's book and other educational efforts on animation.
