For my last birthday, my brother got me this cool lumos light switch. There are lots of options for similar products online and it's a project that you could probably easily make yourself with supplies from a craft/hardware store.

I had a friend give me a wall transfer once that she made with her cricut. It looked something like this and it's been on my wall for ages. Same friend also made me a couple pillows with the same machine that had Dumbledore quotes on them. Imagine this but with "Happiness can be found even in the darkest of places..." on it.

I've also given out an "After Harry Potter" set of books before. For those who read Harry Potter and think "what now?" I'm sure this could be catered to the receiver, but the set I gave my friend had Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Lev Grossman's The Magicians, a printed and spiral bound set of Pottermore writings (or the ones that were available at the time), and The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook. I think I had one or two more, it was a couple years ago.

I also handmade a pair of Luna's radish earrings for a friend once. I followed a tutorial online and it was surprisingly easy - just required a pair of earrings, some wire, and a few beads and they looked great.

I guess it all depends on what kind of gift you want to give her. There is a Harry Potter application for just about everything. If your girlfriend doesn't have a lot of the standard merchandise already, you might try just checking out the local bookstore. With the release of Cursed Child, most bookstores in my area now have entire tables dedicated to Harry Potter gear. Last time I was at a Barnes and Noble I walked out with a Marauder's Map blanket. I've been sorely tempted by that 3D Hogwart's puzzle a time or two as well. And when I went on the WB studio tour, I got this really cool wand necklace. It comes in an Ollivander's box, though it is a bit pricey.

Good luck. Happy birthday to the gf!

First of, American or British? Definitely get the correct ones!

This is a good place to see what's available (although they seem to have missed this box set).

I would recommenced these:

UK editions:
Original covers if she prefers them

or

These (hardcover) which are the newest and imo best looking.

US editions:

The originals come in an awesome box

or

Newest ones which are, imo, the best looking ones period. I love that art! And who doesn't like spines that make a picture?

You could nitpick both of the 'newer' editions, but I probably wouldn't if they were a gift. So go for the ones you think she'll like best! The argument for the original editions is nostalgia mostly, the art style varies a lot in both UK and US editions. However, seeing as she doesn't have a set from before this might be less important.

I'm afraid I don't know where the best place to buy is, or even if all of these are even in print- this is purely based on the art and my likes. Good luck!

(P.S. The hogwarts library boxed set is a must buy if she hasn't already got it, HOWEVER a new edition of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is due to release on 9th February 2017. I assume they'll re-release the box set sometime after that, so you may want to wait with this one)

EDIT: There is no way the library boxed set is $200, RRP here is £25.. Be careful with prices, I guess!)

  1. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (audiobook narrated by Eddie Redmayne and there is an awesome illustrated edition as well)

  2. Quidditch Through the Ages (audiobook narrated by The Walking Dead's Andrew Linoln)

  3. The Tales of Beedle the Bard (sadly not an audiobook version [yet])

  4. Harry Potter Prequel (https://www.readanybook.com/ebook/harry-potter-the-prequel-565703; https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Potter_prequel)

  5. Pottermore Presents (three ebooks consisting of JKR writings from Pottermore. You might hate it. It's just literally biographies about various people, places, and things. http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Pottermore_Presents)

  6. Harry, A History (I'm sure there's more "fandom history" books out there, but this is the one I read and it's pretty extensive. It's written by Melissa Anelli, of The Leaky Cauldron)

  7. A History of Magic (https://www.amazon.com/Harry-Potter-History-British-Library/dp/1408890763/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1537831443&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=a+history+of+magic+harry+potter&dpPl=1&dpID=510Z6PKn9ZL&ref=plSrch)

  8. ...and the Cursed Child (haven't read this yet. Heard it sucks)

  9. Illustrated Editions (I don't have any of these yet, but they seem amazing.

And here's some viewing material as well, if you're interested:

  10. YouTube movie vs. book analyses: 'Harry's Moving Castle's' "Did It Suck?" series (https://youtu.be/4iZUMTGqV4k); The Dom's "Lost in Adaptation" series (https://youtu.be/99z5oAUQcKI)
  11. Some notable documentaries: "JK Rowling: A Year in the Life," Harry Potter and Me.". There are several other Potter documentaries, but these are my favorites.
  12. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Pottermore can be really difficult to navigate, but it's a great source for long descriptions of things you encounter in the Wizarding World. However, since you're so new to this world, I'd recommend using the HP Lexicon if you have any questions about characters, spells, potions, creatures, maps of Hogwarts Castle, and many more.

They also have a bunch of official books they've released over the years that delve deeper into the world (though rely heavily on the films for inspiration). These include Magical Places, The Creature Vault, The Artifact Vault, and The Character Vault.

Also, the HP-Companion site goes through the books chapter by chapter with artwork and comments on it that could help you better understand what's going on, if needed. They've had some issues with bugs, but so far the 1st book has been completely fixed.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Harry Potter!

u/Rangwrell · 3 pointsr/harrypotter

A little off-topic to this conversation but there is a book called 'The Magicians' and it has to do with a college of Magic. It's more adult than Harry Potter but it's interesting. Link!

Back to the topic. Love the thoughts that went into this. I've thought of what the american version of the Harry Potter wizarding world would be like but I've never gone into so much detail. Great work! :)

u/eyl327 · 2 pointsr/harrypotter

The set I have looks like this one and it has all of the notes and drawings from Harry, Ron, and Hermione. The set only has Fantastic Beasts and Quidditch Through the Ages. I got the Beedle the Bard separately.

From what I've seen, it looks like the new Illustrated Fantastic Beasts is really nice and you may consider getting that.

u/msi12345 · 6 pointsr/harrypotter

If you have some time on your hands, you might be interested to get a copy of the Ultimate Unofficial Guide to the Mysteries of Harry Potter

It came out between books 4 and 5 so there's a ton of speculation about what would happen in the future books. I remember enjoying it so much at the time because it helped me recognize clues/foreshadowing I hadn't seen before, even after multiple re-reads of books 1-4.

If you want to see what the mindset was like when the series was only halfway published, I think it's a fun read.

u/aymeline · 12 pointsr/harrypotter

It's "The Case of Beasts - Explore the Film Wizardry of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them": https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0062571370?ref_=sr_1_9&qid=1479873698&sr=8-9&keywords=fantastic%20beasts%20and%20where%20to%20find%20them&sa-no-redirect=1&pldnSite=1

I highly recommend it. It's probably the coolest book I own and it includes so many nice poster's and pull-outs. The design company (MinaLima) that do all the graphic design for the HP/FB films designed it, so it's really nicely put together.

u/chandlerdoc · 2 pointsr/harrypotter

It is pretty awesome isn't it! It's actually a throw blanket/ tapestry however I purchase it off of Amazon. Here is the link!

u/zachatree · 3 pointsr/harrypotter

I would recommend giving the Magicians series by Lev Grossman a read. It is a pretty cool and dark take on a wizarding ivy league-esq college in upstate New York.

u/kbiering · 1 pointr/harrypotter

I wish she would make an encyclopedia. I hate Pottermore. I want something like what Cassandra Clare did or (sorry!) Stephenie Meyer did. I think if she got a design team behind her it would be amazing. These books are amazing and the designers would kick ass at helping her. 1 2 3

Here is the [recipe] (https://thedomesticrebel.com/2016/08/15/the-best-butterbeer-cupcakes/) I used. I tweeked it a little bit to my liking. I used a mold from [amazon] (https://www.amazon.com/Cybrtrayd-A126-Protective-Copyrighted-Instructions/dp/B000EBMUNU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1511559193&sr=8-2&keywords=harry+potter+chocolate+frog+mold) and stuffed the dark chocolate frogs with butterscotch chips. I added bits o' brickle to the icing before placing the frogs on. Trying to make fetch Harry Potter holidays/Christmas happen and used Thanksgiving as an opportunity to start. My in-laws loved it, but it didn't turn out quite as I would have liked especially since I was pressed for time. [edit: I don't know how to format, guys]

u/elbowsss · 2 pointsr/harrypotter

Found it! It was books 1-4. Thanks for bringing that memory out! I'm going to see if I can get my hands on my old copy too! :)

u/sjmoodyiii · 1 pointr/harrypotter

I just got my wife this. We both love games... not sure how it plays yet personally, but the review seem good

u/potterarchy · 8 pointsr/harrypotter

The Magicians by Lev Grossman has been fairly popular on this sub.

Your girlfriend might also be surprised to learn that The Giver is actually part of a four-part series. :)

u/FancyFool · 3 pointsr/harrypotter

Definitely! It's got amazing detail, cool props, and additional content not seen in the film or only given a glimpse of. I don't know how much it is where you are but I found one on Amazon for $27 USD. My girlfriend was surprised to hear it was less than $100 USD.

u/palcatraz · 4 pointsr/harrypotter

It is not a book. Or well, not a story book.

['Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find'] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantastic_Beasts_and_Where_to_Find_Them) was released in 2001 with most of the proceedings made going to charity. It was released with an accompanying book 'Quidditch through the ages'. But neither of these books are story books. FBAWTF is a mock-up of the text book that Harry uses in the books and just gives some basic information on a lot of magical creatures. Quidditch through the ages is similar, except it is focused on quidditch history, game play, all of that.

Updated, hardcover versions of Fantastic Beasts, Quidditch Through the Ages, and Tales of Beedle the Bard (can't find the new version for preorder) are due out in March. All 3 books will be hardcover, and you can preorder the updated Hogwarts Library boxed set on Amazon for under $25.

Can we talk about how beautiful these updated covers are?

u/McWhoopass · 2 pointsr/harrypotter

This is amazing! But you seem to be missing the latest thing for Potterphiles. There's a deck building card game called Hogwarts battles that's quite brilliant and a nice addition to a collection such as this.

u/dorxincandeland · 4 pointsr/harrypotter

Any thoughts on this product from Amazon?

Seems a little steep after shipping, but they have the option for a 12 and 24 pack as well.

Worth it?

u/derefnull · 4 pointsr/harrypotter

Both Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them as well as Quidditch Through the Ages are available in paperback form. They even sell them on Amazon.

u/Ignorer · 1 pointr/harrypotter

I just found out about it less than a month ago and had to get it!
Jim Kay the illustrator is in the process of putting out the entire series I believe! (..I hope...)

You can pre-order it now on Amazon! (Set to deliver in October)

*The price keeps getting lower and lower. I'm probably going to book an order a few days before the release date :3

Check out UK's cover version of the illustrated sorcerer stone, it's beautiful! I WANT IT

While the love shines through your efforts, it is possible to buy this online: https://www.amazon.com/Hermione-Grangers-Wand-Ollivanders-Box/dp/B000BVYQ9Y

u/MacGreensomething · 4 pointsr/harrypotter

I made them myself. Melting chocolates are relatively inexpensive (you can find them at most any craft store) and I ordered this mold off of Amazon.

Though you could try and of these also:Here, Or Here, Or these "sexy frogs," which actually kind of creep me out, lol.

The one I ordered used a LOT of chocolate.

u/NuclearMedicineGuy · 4 pointsr/harrypotter

Edit: looks like there is an update coming Amazon

u/badchild11 · 1 pointr/harrypotter

I got it as a gift for christmas last year, but I found it here on Amazon!

u/Supershinyface · 2 pointsr/harrypotter

here is the store locator for Reed's (the company that makes this stuff!) so you can find out if a local store sells it.

here is where you can buy it directly from the brewer, if there's no local shop and/or you're ok waiting for shipping.

it's also available on Amazon, if you have gift cards lying around.

Accio Butterbeer!

u/nedaterranean · 3 pointsr/harrypotter

I got a Slytherin throw blanket this year for Christmas. It's available on Amazon for all houses and also with the Hogwarts crest. You could also hang it on the wall as a tapestry.

If this is the one you found, it is the correct one.

Compare to this.

u/andrewff · 15 pointsr/harrypotter

Not exactly an RPG, but I've had a blast with Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle

u/songoku9001 · 2 pointsr/harrypotter

There is a version of the book available but I don't think it's the version.

u/sk8rbunn · 1 pointr/harrypotter

They have 'Trivia Games' for Sorcerer's Stone, and for Chamber of Secrets, but that's it.

u/Charmander111793 · 2 pointsr/harrypotter

Found an Amazon link. They also have Astronomy Tower & Hogwarts Express!

u/reusablethrowaway- · 1 pointr/harrypotter

It's from this book, just a poor quality photo. There might be better out there, but that's all I could find quickly.

u/jetsniper · 3 pointsr/harrypotter

Oh, that's weird, we have them in Canada. You can find them on Amazon for $21

u/Lysdestic · 1 pointr/harrypotter

Sorry for the delay, been away from the desk.

I haven't made the purchase yet so YMMV, but this is the link I found:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Harry-Potter-Box-Set-Collection/dp/1408856786

u/ohnoimrunningoutofsp · 1 pointr/harrypotter

Oddly enough the elder wand I have doesn't have any name plate and/or clip with dumbledors name on it. And I don't see it online either. Do you have a picture of what you're referring to? I'm looking at hermione's noble collection wand and don't see a name plate either.

edit: here is hermione's. https://www.amazon.com/Hermione-Grangers-Wand-Ollivanders-Box/dp/B000BVYQ9Y/ref=sr_1_4?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1542843094&sr=1-4&keywords=hermiones+wand

edit edit: nvm the box outside of the box, the white box, has dumbledor's name, but no name plate or clip...

u/TeaChick · 1 pointr/harrypotter

Oh it does! Sadly it's only for the first book but it gets really detailed.

u/LABrooks · 2 pointsr/harrypotter

If you compare they're basically a cheap knockoff from the Nobel collection. Every set of hogwarts pins sold by that manufacturer has the same error with Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff. It's a deliberate "error." I assume it has something to do with copyrights they don't wish to pay.
