We understand that Homebridge is daunting for people who don't know Linux, or even heard of it. HOOBS is trying to change that.

We make documentation for HOOBS, but most of it applies to Homebridge as well. This set of docs https://github.com/hoobs-org/HOOBS/wiki/2.5-Installing-from-Scratch will help you setup the system for HOOBS or Homebridge.

However if you don't want to setup Linux. You can purchase a Raspberry Pi, case and power supply on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/CanaKit-Raspberry-Premium-Supply-Listed/dp/B01C6EQNNK/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=raspberry+pi&qid=1572280456&sr=8-4

Then you can download and flash an image to a micro SD card. You can download or purchase an SD card from our website https://hoobs.org/. If you don't wish to donate and simply want to download the image, it is on GitHub https://github.com/hoobs-org/HOOBS/releases.

You can flash the HOOBS image using the balinaEtcher. https://www.balena.io/etcher/

We also sell the HOOBS Box. It is a Raspberry Pi with Homebridge pre-installed and ready to go. You can also find that on our website. https://hoobs.org/

My gas fireplace had a switch on the wall, so I thought a smart switch would accomplish my goal to add the ability to use Siri to control the fireplace. Realized the switch was a low powered one, not a normal light switch.

This wired between the switch allowed me to connect to the aeotec z wave hub and works great.

There really isn’t any reason to. The two of the three devices Apple allows as a standard HomeKit hub are wireless only.

Neither of the Zero models have Ethernet built in. However, if you must run them with Ethernet they will work with a USB to Ethernet adapter. If you going to do that you might as well just get the regular Pi Zero. It’s the same specs, minus wireless, for $5. You just need to pick up something like this.

I’ve used this device successfully in my homebridge setup to control my RF ceiling fans. There is a homebridge plug-in available for it.

I’m home assistant with the home bridge plugin so not sure about home bridge only but I use Energenie MiHomelight switches . They don’t require a neutral and their bridge outputs to mqqt

How cheap? TP-Link LB100 is $20 on amazon right now.
You should be able to use homebridge-tplink-lightbulb plugin.
