I'm certainly very interested in the Kindle Voyage. I'm upgrading from my slightly damaged, but still useable Kindle Keyboard. So there's certainly some great things that are shiny and so tempting:

  • Flush Screen - Yay! No more dust/crumbs that fall between the screen and bevel!
  • 4 gigs of Storage - Yay! Finally the same size as my Keyboard again!
  • Haptic buttons - Yay! Finally a return to page turn buttons again! The fact that it's haptic is pretty shiny and fancy.
  • 300 ppi - Shiny and fancy screen!
  • Adaptive Light - It'll be a nice and shiny upgrade from my keyboard with the case with the pull-out light in the corner.

However there are some things which are giving my some concern for pause:

  • Price: $199 for the base model, $219 not to be advertised to.
  • Glass screen: It's certainly premium, however, what about scratches, smudges, cracks etc? This will most likely mean I'll have to get the Official Screen Protector which will cost me $30
  • Case: What are the details on the Origami Case that will set me back $60? Edit: Apparently it's a leather cover that attaches magnetically to the back of the Voyage, and wraps a bit around the side, but not all the way around. The lid flips over the top, and can fold to be a stand. There's also a Non-Leather Origami Case for $45. Edit 2: Here's the link for all the available Kindle Voyage Covers.

So if I'm looking at all of this together, I'm seeing a $309 price tag for a Wifi, No-offers, with Case and Screen protector? That's certainly giving me cause to pause, especially when the 4gig PW2 is at least $60 cheaper, or even more depending on accessories...

As much as I want to just jump on it, I think I'm gonna have to be patient and wait until reviews and customer feedback comes out on what's needed, what issues there may be.

Edit: For those interested in the non-E-Ink, Kindle also announced new Kindle Fire HDX (8.9"), HD 7", HD 6" and HD Kids Edition

Case-wise I went for Amazon's own. Magnetic closure for auto-on/off, slim, comfortable to hold, pretty solid and durable. (To be fair, there weren't many other options back when I got my Paperwhite.)

It sits in an outside pocket of my daily laptop bag so it's exposed to a fair amount of knocking around (and sometimes moisture if it rains) during my commute. Hasn't failed me in 2 years: no damage to the Kindle, no marks on the case.

Unlimited probably isn't necessary, especially if you're new to building up an ebook collection. I'm pretty sure there was a post here recently from an Amazon employee (ex or current) saying he felt Unlimited wasn't worth it due to the "bargain bin" level of most of the content. That said, I've never used it myself and to each their own.

There's plenty of free, cheap, and public domain content available both on Amazon and elsewhere. You can learn to sideload non-Amazon books pretty easily. (Though personally I've never had the need.)

  • Project Gutenberg is the well-known free/PD archive but there are plenty of other sources.
  • /r/FreeEBOOKS and /r/ebookdeals are a good start on reddit.
  • Check Amazon's main Kindle eBooks page every so often, and/or sign up for reminder emails. They have daily deals, monthly deals, and regular $1.99/$2.99/$3.99 and other sales on a bunch of books.

Also: For more popular books (those with an actual cost!) start building up an Amazon wishlist dedicated to ebooks. Use eReaderIQ to import said wishlist and track prices. The site will email you whenever a book drops in price, either by a particular amount or past a threshold you set. This is the primary way I buy popular books that normally retail in the $8-13 range -- I have plenty of content to keep me occupied in the interim, and I'll snag those more expensive books when I get an alert that they've dropped to the more reasonable $3-$5 range.

Tried a lot of cases, including Pad & Quill, official Amazon black leather cover, Omoton, etc.

IMO the official cover felt very solid and was heavier than the Omoton but still had some flex to the top cover (pressure from a small, hard object could press the cover against the screen). I figured it doesn't offer much over the 3rd party alternative so I returned it. I gave the Omoton case to my brother because I wanted a vertical folding case and found this Moko cover with a stand. Although it adds considerable bulk, I prefer to just rest the stand on my belly or the table when I'm reading. Top cover has no flex whatsoever and I felt comfortable taking it on my recent trip abroad with my carry-on. I also like the added bonus of not having to pry the kindle from the cover as you often have to do with cases like the Amazon or Omoton covers (it fits in with a little latch system that works pretty well).

What I did was I started looking at short story collections. A short story lets you see how an author writes without needing to read an entire book of theirs. I have two favorite short story collection "series".

Dark Beyond the Stars, which is a Sci-fi, space opera collection. There are other Beyond the Stars books as well if you liked the first.

And Samuel Peralta's The Future Chronicles. The Future chronicles typically does some sort of sci-fi, but there are others as well. The great part about The Future Chronicles, is that you get to pick your flavor. In the mood for alternate history? Pick Alt. History 101, in the mood for spaceships and star ships? Pick The Galaxy Chronicles. In the mood for time travel? Pick the Time Travel Chronicles, ect.

Also, The Martian is a fantastic book. As well as xkcd's What if? Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions.

I have this one (in brown) witch I order after looking at many reviews and different types of covers.
It's stylish and looks nice, I think it really compliments the kindle. It's also very practical since you can prop up the kindle in a table and read it while eating or taking notes.
The best thing about it is the strap in the back where you slide your hand and witch makes reading on the kindle so much more comfortable and easy since you get a really good grip on the device and aren't worried it will drop or get your hand tired from holding it in a awkward position.
The case also allows for me to read in bed with the kindle on its side witch is nice when you are with your head on the pillow and reading just before you fall asleep.

Edit: fixed the imaged links.

I've owned a second-gen original-flavor Kindle (2009), a Kindle Keyboard 3G (2012), a 6th-Gen Paperwhite (2013), and a 7th-Gen Paperwhite (2017, my current Kindle).

The Kindle Keyboard was definitely a big improvement over the earlier design, but the only thing I miss is its pageturn buttons, and I wouldn't sacrifice the Paperwhite's built-in frontlight to get them back—especially not when paired with a touchscreen that makes navigation and highlighting infinitely easier than a D-pad. (I literally didn't even use the highlight feature until I got my first Paperwhite; now I use it pretty frequently.) The old lighted cover was nice, but it really doesn't hold a candle to the build-in light. While 3G connectivity was a feature I aggressively sought out in earlier models, since switching to WiFi-only, I found I haven't once missed it. And the speakers I used exactly once, when I tried using the auto-narration feature while doing some cleaning, and it was so jarring I stopped after maybe 5 minutes.

You should look into the Verso Prologue. It's made of leather and has a "book" look to it but it doesn't add bulk to the KPW. They've got it in red and brown with very subtle designs for each.

FWIW, I've got the Amazon KPW case and the Prologue in red and I love both of them but find myself using Amazon version because of the magnetic closure.

EDIT: I just looked the case up and it looks like they've got 3 additional styles for it. Link here.

u/lordofthefeed · 1 pointr/kindle

Heh. Just posted this in another thread, but
>I'm a huge fan of book-looking ones. Just got the [Verso Prologue] (http://www.amazon.com/Verso-Prologue-Cover-Kindle-Paperwhite/dp/B006ZCBN9E) in blue and it's great. [Note that I got it for my K5/Kindle Touch.]

u/pa-guy · 4 pointsr/kindle

Get a case. One of my cases opens up and has a strap for your hand to make it easy to one-hand the kindle. The other case will auto turn on/off the kindle as the case is opened. I kind of wish I had a hybrid, but either one of them is better than no case at all.

Other than that, I've been a happy Paperwhite user for some time and don't really use any other accessories, other than the power charger.

u/wisenheimer51 · 6 pointsr/kindle

Yes, but I have a huge pile of books on my kindle account and I just have to read them all (sigh). Also, to my knowledge the amazon store:

  • is generally cheaper than the Kobo store (example - Amazon vs Kobo),
  • has a bigger collection (with many foreign language books), and
  • has a nice integration with Audible.

It is so slim it feels like it is kind of fragile, even though it may not be. I have this Swees case and it is great, like the old leather Kindle cases, and only $10:

u/juicyfizz · 2 pointsr/kindle

I love my Paperwhite. Don't see myself switching anytime soon. Also, looks like the Paperwhite without the ads is available and in stock.

u/Yatta99 · 1 pointr/kindle

I got a Moko case for my Paperwhite and love it. Light weight, fits like a glove, inexpensive, and has a clasp that activates the sleep mode when closed.

u/gnebgnome · 2 pointsr/kindle

I got the paperwhite version of this. I actually mostly got it because I'm vegan, so I didn't want real leather, but it's also cheaper and lighter than the official case, and the durability has been great. I'm not sure how to tell if it ships internationally, but I've had an official origami cover for my Voyage for years and I love it:

u/blackesthearted · 4 pointsr/kindle

The new Paperwhite is considered 10th gen . The email I got about the KU offer reads,

> Thank you for purchasing a new Kindle Paperwhite (10th Generation). This purchase has earned you a promotional offer of 6 months of Kindle Unlimited for FREE. Terms and conditions can be found below.

And it's in the listing for the official cover.

u/splatterhead · 10 pointsr/kindle

Yes it's worth it.

Also, buy a cover for it LIKE THIS (provided as an example only).

You can still "open" your book and read it.

The battery life is better than an iPad.

The fonts are crisper.

It fits in my back pocket.

u/viper_in_the_grass · 2 pointsr/kindle

I checked a few older threads and here are a few links to suggested covers:

Fintie

Omoton

MoKo

They all bend backwards and have auto wake/sleep. They all have different colours and designs.

These are the regular covers. There are also some neat covers called origami that fold in the back, making a little stand for the Kindle. Here's one by Fintie. Seems like all these brands have them, so just search and choose your favourite.

Note: those links are for the Paperbacks versions. If you go with the Voyage, just search for that version.

u/dnadosanddonts · 3 pointsr/kindle

I've always favored an easel-style case, allowing me to read while having the case on a stable, horizontal surface. Closing the lid puts my Paperwhite to sleep; opening and swiping the screen brings it back to life.

Admittedly vertical flip covers like this aren't nearly as popular or numerous as other designs. But then, who can account for taste?

Advantages of the Paperwhite: It has a lighted screen, it has a higher screen resolution (that she likely won't notice when reading with larger font sizes), and it feels more substantive to the touch (less like plastic).

Now, other than that, I don't see the problem with the "regular" Kindle. It's not readable in the dark, but she's used to that if she's currently reading only printed books.

If I were you, I'd look at officially refurbished Kindles before looking at used ones. The issue there: Amazon is reporting out of stock until the 23rd. Also, it's listed at $56.00, which is slightly over your budget.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KDRQEYQ

Whatever you do, the "generation" is the most important in determining the potential for getting new features as they're released by Amazon. Most of the current models are all 8th generation, but the current Paperwhite is 7th generation.

Amazon frequently marks down new Kindles by $20 during sale events. During Black Friday sales, new Kindles were $30 off, making them $49.99; that's the cheapest I've ever seen them. That's not helping you now, but I wouldn't want you to purchase it used or refurbished now and then have buyer's remorse if they have an after-Christmas sale on the new ones.

u/terkistan · 3 pointsr/kindle

I don't currently see the Amazon-refurb model available yesterday, but a 3rd party seller has one for $23 in "acceptable" condition here:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/ol/B00492CIC8/ref=mw_dp_olp?ie=UTF8&condition=used

The cheapest Certified Refurbished model I see currently is a 7th Gen model from Amazon, $56:

I had the $10 MoKu case and sent it back, it doesn't add much bulk but as much as I use it I don't think it would last long -- for $10 bucks can't expect much. I then looked at the Casebot by Finti, bought this one. I returned it when I found they made a nice leather one for a few bucks more and got it instead. Very pleased.

u/dread_beard · 2 pointsr/kindle

Man alive was the original Amazon cover bad. I purchased one for pre-order for my 2017 Oasis and actually laughed at what a piece of garbge it was.

I use this one right now:

http://www.amazon.com/RookieStudio-Perfect-Viewer/dp/B005XN0SGU

I use it and it's seriously the best app for reading CBRs on a tabled ever.

u/binaryhermit · 2 pointsr/kindle

I'm not who you asked, but I can. It's a bit of a tight fit though.
EDIT: Paperwhite 3 though, in a beat up https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FVU5VJE/

u/jensen404 · 2 pointsr/kindle

Even better, you can get the "Without Special Offers" version of the Paperwhite 3 for the same price. ($79.99)

CaseBot Case for Kindle Oasis (9th Gen, 2017 Release) - Denim Charcoal https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078H8H6YL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_sdUGsBoo3i3Xs

I got this one and I like it.

u/lantech · 2 pointsr/kindle

IMO one is better off with a hard case rather than a sleeve. The sleeve doesn't prevent crush/bend injuries.

I have this one on my paperwhite. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H1OR9RK

u/92MsNeverGoHungry · 1 pointr/kindle

Yeah, that's weird. I couldn't find it on the Otterbox website either.

But here it is on amazon itself.

u/broncosandwrestling · 1 pointr/kindle

https://www.amazon.com/All-new-Paperwhite-Water-Safe-Generation-2018-Charcoal/dp/B078TMQWKR/ (official fabric cover)
https://www.amazon.com/All-New-Kindle-Paperwhite-Leather-Generation-2018/dp/B078TMTLB8/ (official leather cover)

Check the "Used & new (x) from $xx.xx" bit for each color. I don't think there's any like new ones up right now, unfortunately. Amazon puts more up often, though.

u/BeeryUSA · 1 pointr/kindle

I got the one they advertise as "leather" ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078TMTLB8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00 )

It's fine, seems fairly sturdy. I really doubt it's leather though. Probably it's bonded leather, which is basically powdered leather (so that it retains the leather smell and feel) mixed with a bonding agent and some percentage of polyurethane on a fabric backing. I'm guessing this has a whole lot of polyurethane in it, because it does not feel like leather and barely even smells like leather.

u/amrith10 · 2 pointsr/kindle

Sorry for the delay' I am using a Swees case (http://www.amazon.com/Swees%C2%AE-Amazon-Kindle-Voyage-Cover/dp/B00P21LJ02/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1426568700&sr=8-1&keywords=swees+kindle+voyage+case), although when I bought it, it was only about $5.

The bezel capacitance problem, well, it happens on and off; I am guessing it is because the screen was not sealed off too well during manufacture, which is expected when taking into account the sort of crazy schedule that Amazon have had to maintain.

That said, it is no excuse for a non-perfect product.

As I've found, though, the more and more I use it, I get into this proper 'hold' that I know just works perfect for me. As you use it, you'll figure one out for yourself as well.

u/David-El · 5 pointsr/kindle

Not in any particular order.

u/SodTiwaz · 4 pointsr/kindle

I've been using THIS ONE for 2 years now without any issues. I've dropped my kindle a few times but only on carpet so I'm not sure how much protection it gives if dropped against a hard surface. I have an older version of the case so these may be off a bit but here's what my scale says:

>6th Gen Paperwhite weight: ~208 g

>Moko weight: ~112 g

>Combined weight 318-320 g or 11.2 Oz

u/Condawg · 1 pointr/kindle

It really is a great experience. I was split between buying the Paperwhite or a new graphics card. Glad I went with the Paperwhite first, just my first day with it's been awesome. I'd only planned on reading books with it, but getting news and shit like that delivered to it, and how easy it is to do, just adds a whole other layer that I didn't expect. Really enjoying everything about it.

I've been on the fence about getting a cover, but I haven't shopped around for them at all. Just saw the ones Amazon was pushing and thought $40 was a bit much. Now I'm seeing this, and shit, eleven bucks? That's reasonable as hell.
