I highly recommend The Best in Tent Camping: Wisconsin, which has not just useful overviews for most of the State Parks (and some County Parks, too, I believe? I don't have the book on hand right now) but also gives specific tips on what campsites in those parks are the best. Hugely helpful. There was also a Flickr album with pictures of those sites floating around last summer when I was looking; I'll see if I can dig it up.

Wow, that video is great. Pretty much sums it up.

Check out this book by a guy from Madison, "The Fox" as the Germans called him.

I'm curious to hear the answer. I just enrolled in a Wisconsin DNR class on Learning to Hunt Deer for Food (haven't hunted before). This book made a believer out of a locavore urbanite like myself. Seems like redditors should be a good community to help each other out with local food exchange.

Do some research before you go shopping.

Sleep Like the Dead is a really good review/research site. They cut across all brands in their reviews and they explain why certain beds are certain ways. For example it's really hard to comparison shop mattresses because manufacturers tend to make specific models only for specific stores. The insides may be exceptionally similar, but it's difficult to tell that at the stores and sales people aren't great about sharing that info.

I spent most of my life on a traditional innerspring mattress but recently (like a month ago) switched to one of the bed in a box foam mattress and I'm loving it. My hip and lower back pain has dramatically decreased and the price was sooo much better.

This is the mattress I got from Amazon. Slightly lower rated then the Caspers/Leesas of the world, but also a lot cheaper. I didn't want to invest a ton if I wasn't sure about the whole foam mattress thing.

I already had a box spring from my old bed that was still in good shape, so I didn't get a new one, but if I had, I'd probably go with something like a platform bed. There are really simple ones like this one that'll get the job done and let you have plenty of room for storage underneath. You can also get some that have drawers built in for storage which is handy.

Then, depending on your style, you could add a headboard to any frame.

If you're starting out, I recommend this guy. It's a great beginner guitar and around your price point. Jasmine S35 Acoustic Guitar, Natural by Jasmine http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002F58TG/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_meAstb0B2W04A

Bike repair and maintenance is pretty easy.

https://www.amazon.com/Bicycling-Complete-Bicycle-Maintenance-Repair/dp/160529487X

That book will tell you all you need to know.

Bike repair shops charge that much, because people quit learning how to do it, so they can get away with it.

The left rarely advocates for zero tolerance policy. It's old and archived, but the Geek Feminism Wiki lists Zero Tolerance as a red flag, preferring instead "A scale of consequences that takes into account multiple factors, but which includes the possibility of complete and permanent exclusion when that is the consequence that is called for." Guidelines on how to write a Code of Conduct for a con will rarely mention "zero tolerance" at all. Papers have been written on how zero tolerance disproportionately affects minorities, with the case in front of us being an example. There are books exploring zero tolerance policies, and while I haven't read that one myself, the summary doesn't put such policies in a good light, and ends with a recommendation for a three chance system.

There is no one in this thread arguing that this policy is a good idea. This is entirely a misapplication of what leftists actually argue. Zero tolerance policies are a lazy excuse for avoiding nuance, pushed largely by school administrators who are using their brains less than the students they're supposed to be teaching.

It's a very well written piece by State Journal standards. The series it is part of on housing and homeless issues in Madison is better written and researched than normal for them.

UW-Madison's Go Big Read book for the 2016-17 academic year is Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City http://www.amazon.com/Evicted-Poverty-Profit-American-City/dp/0553447432?ie=UTF8&keywords=evicted%20poverty%20and%20profit%20in%20the%20american%20city&qid=1465487438&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1. The author is Matthew Desmond, who is now at Harvard, but got his PhD from UW-Madison. The book describes his experiences interacting with multiple landlords and tenants in Milwaukee around 2008 to 2010. He profiles an African-American area on the north side and a trailer park near the airport. It's a very enlightening and sobering read because all of the individuals involved are portrayed as very human.

You guys got a nice back-and-forth going here, but I'd just like to interject with a book recommendation on the history of police: Rise of the Warrior Cop: The Militarization of America's Police Forces by Radley Balko (https://www.amazon.com/Rise-Warrior-Cop-Militarization-Americas/dp/1610394577).

It's a well researched and footnoted book - the author explains that police as we know them are a surprisingly recent development. Mostly affirming the info in the links shared by u/Gilgong0. What I found interesting is 1) we as people only started having police when people started living close to strangers in larger cities (because before that your family and church members just shamed you and/or physically dealt with you if needed) and 2) there is not technically a constitutional basis for police (but no one is making a serious argument they shouldn't exist)

Apply for rent abatement right away and call the building inspector to schedule a complaint inspection. This is the fastest way to light a fire under your landlord's ass. You should absolutely request multiple SAFE space heaters and reimbursement for utility bills. They make space heaters with thermostats built in that can be left on when you're not at home.

Source: am landlord. Had this exact issue two years ago and was all over it, but it takes time. Try to be a little understanding. Furnace repairs aren't always easy to diagnose or find contractors for. They (hopefully) aren't doing this to you on purpose.

The "working title" of the film on Barbara Hoffman's murders was actually the book about the same event.
