If you don't like hard feeling hair "putty", I recommend going with something like Suavecito or Uppercut Deluxe Pomade.

I've used both of these products for hair styling, and I think they're simply in a league of their own. The Suavecito is definitely on the milder side, but I like that it doesn't make my hair firm. Walmart carries American Crew Fiber which I think is an OK alternative to the brands I recommended, but I wouldn't waste my money on it unless you just absolutely have to buy it at Walmart tonight.

Use damp hair with all these products, but make sure its on the drier side, because the two pomades are water soluble (so they wash out easy, as opposed to some pomades like Murray's which take multiple washes to get out).

While I'm going on about this, my only other advice in regards to hair styling is to make sure your hair has some of its natural oils. It REALLY helps in the long run. I noticed that most shampoos were drying out my scalp and hair, so I switched to some all-natural crap from one of those health food stores (I think its seaweed brand or something). I started washing it every other day, and my hair looks supremely better, feels better, styles easier and uses less product.

Here is some advice I wrote about in the past when asked a similar question, edited the part in bold that deal with time of posession

> Oster 76 requires alot of maintenance and is very expensive (because you have to buy actual blades instead of guards, so if you wanted a #2 you would snap of the #1 and put a #2) but it is a very durable clipper, assuming you keep up with the maintenance. For a full set it will cost you around $200+ depending on how many blades you buy
http://www.amazon.com/Oster-76076-010-Classic-Professional-Clipper/dp/B00070E8LA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1359765399&sr=8-1&keywords=Oster+76

>If you dont want to deal with the maintenance you can look at the Andis Improved Masters, they are durable, require the basic maintenance (oil and wipe of blades in between use). Downside is that it gets hot very quickly. This clipper will cost you about $100 including the guards which you will buy separately. These are probably the most popular clipper, probably more popular than the 76 because it is better for all around clippers and requires less maintenance. There is also the Fade Masters which is the same clipper but with a different blade, recommend the Improved Masters over the Fade if you wanted to buy one clipper.
http://www.amazon.com/Andis-Improved-Master-Professional-Clipper/dp/B000BBGS36/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1359765434&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=Andsi+Masters

>Another option is the Wahl 5 star senior, it is a good all around clipper like the Masters, it is a bit more cheaper, it will cost you around $60-70 including the guards. It is more powerful than the Masters (especially if you get the one with the latest v9000 motor) and doesnt get as hot as fast. Also, all Wahl products come with a 2 year warranty, some even 3.
There is also the Wahl 5 star Magic Clipper which is the same as the Wahl 5 star seniors except they have a plastic housing instead of metal. Which makes it less durable but also means it takes longer to heat up. As a result of the plastic instead of metal housing it is a little cheaper at about $40.Also requires basic maintenance.
http://www.amazon.com/Wahl-8545-5-star-Senior-Clipper/dp/B0009J8XSS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1359765582&sr=8-1&keywords=5+star+senior
http://www.amazon.com/Wahl-Professional-WA8451-Hair-Clipper/dp/B000ZMAL2U/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1359765628&sr=8-2&keywords=magic+clip

>I have the Magic Clipper and I like them even more so than my father's Andis Masters which I used exclusively for about 4 yrs until I recently got the Magic Clipper almost a year ago. I have very coarse hair, so I appreciate the extra power the Magic Clipper has over the Masters, you might not need it. Look on youtube for more in depth reviews for these clippers.

>*All the clippers mentioned above are industry standard.

Unless your gf/wife/so is always willing to help out and do the grooming for you, you pretty much have to find outside help.

The waxing thing works for most who try it, but you'll need to make time for appointments (it usually takes 30 minutes to an hour for an experienced waxer to wax a man's back) and you'll need to budget something like $60-75 per visit.

Some folks have sensitive enough skin that waxing irritates it too much, so then we have the laser hair removal thing. That generally works pretty well, especially if you have dark back hair against white or light skin. But it takes a half-dozen appointments or more for really good results, and each appointment can run several hundred dollars.

If you can live with shorter term results, then having someone go over your back with a good, close trimmer, or something like the Norelco Body Groomer is a good option. But be prepared to have to do this once a week or more.

If you decide to groom your back yourself, you run into the most obvious problem: it's pretty hard to cover every inch of your back with just your hands. They don't (can't) twist, bend, and stretch enough to reach everywhere, especially when they're holding a trimmer. And this problem only gets worse the bigger you are.

If you really need an option that you can do entirely on your own, then something like the ManGroomer might work decently, but in my experience, it doesn't get as close as someone else running a trimmer on your back.

You can go with the RazorBa which actually works decently (it get's as close as shaving with a razor) once you get experienced with it, and you can usually just add a few minutes of time to your shaving routine to do your back. Plus, since it's not electronic or mechanical, you can use it in the shower for the most convenience.

You can also try depilatory creams like Nair for Men which do a good job for some, but a poor job for others.

Hey im a nail technician and used to be a horrid nail biter. I've coached many through the habit! Everything these ppl said is true but im going to provide you with some links:

1- Nail file - you dont need a glass one obv but they last forever and are more sustainable.

2- Cuticle Nippers- I would, like u/deskais said, keep them with you all the time for a while and use that when you have a hang nail or rough cuticle you want to pick at. This one is a pretty inexpensive pair that comes with a cuticle pusher to push your cuticles back with.

3- Disgustig nail polish - I've heard tales of people chewing through it but that is mind boggling to me. It tastes awful and will at the very least remind you if you are biting at them subconsciously. There is another brand called "stop the bite" but it wears off and isn't so bad. This one stays on until you remove it.

4- Cuticle Cream. This one is important and would be my #1 choice if you only picked one. Moisturize that shit every day. Keep it on your nightstand or in your car so you dont forget. If they aren't dry, there will be nothing to pick at and they will look so much better.

Id also get a professional manicure just to see how they do it and then that will help you learn how to do it yourself, and it will clean them up and then all you have to do is keep it up with at home care.

Good luck! Id love to see a followup post in a month if you remember.

My advice would be to generally stay away from cordless clippers. It seems like a nice thing to have but in my experience once the battery goes you're better off just buying new ones. My last set of cordless clippers lasted about 18 months, and the ones before that lasted 2 years.

I've shaved my head with clippers for about 15 years and have gone through many. I picked up a WAHL Peanut a few months ago and have been extremely happy with them. They're quite small so even with a cord it's easy to get a good cut.

Lastly if you do get good clippers make sure to oil them regularly...it really makes a difference using them and they'll last forever.

Here is my routine with items and products that work for me.

DAILY Morning:

  1. Scrape tongue; rinse with water; brush teeth for 2 minutes; floss; rinse 1 minute with alcohol-free mouthwash and then gargle 30 seconds with a little more mouthwash; brush tongue with vegetable glycerin.
  2. Shower with warm- not hot- water; shampoo (every other day) and condition (every day); wash pits, feet, in between toes, crotch and crack with antibacterial soap and washcloth; wash rest of body with loofah and body wash of choice.
  3. Wash face with warm water and a gentle face cleanser; shave; apply witch hazel to face, neck, and forehead; apply moisturizer with SPF
  4. Dry off completely, especially pits, in between toes, crotch, and crack; apply Fresh Balls , deodorant, foot cream or powder , and hand cream (as necessary).

    DAILY Night:

  5. Step 1 of morning routine
  6. Wash hands and clean under finger nails * with antibacterial soap
  7. Wash face with warm water and face cleanser; apply moisturizer.

WEEKLY Sat or Sun: (In addition to daily routines)

  8. Use a face scrub in the shower, gently, especially to the areas you will be shaving; clean under toenails with a nail brush*
  9. Soak feet, particularly in summer and/or you have to wear work boots;
  10. While feet are soaking trim fingernails * and clean under them with pointed end of a nail file*, carefully; dry feet.
  11. Trim toenails* and clean under them with nail file*.
  12. Check nose, ears and eyebrows for any hairs that need to be trimmed or anything in between eyebrows that needs to be removed.
  13. Shave back of neck and around ears

    * Use separate tools for hands and feet to avoid spreading any potential fungus to your hands

    BI-WEEKLY Sat or Sun:

  14. Manscape after the morning routine.

I have a few resources that have specific guides, I will post them later. I hope this is somewhat helpful and if you have any questions, let me know.
u/spaceballsrules · 1 pointr/malegrooming

Once or twice a week, exfoliate your head/face/neck with St Ives Apricot Scrub (2% salicylic acid) in the shower and finish by toning with witch hazel. I use Thayer's, but you can get plain generic witch hazel just about anywhere, like Target. Just be sure it is alcohol free, and a little goes a long way. Exfoliating will clean out the pores, and toning will close them back up so that dirt can't easily get back in, as well as moisturize.

Other than that, just wash with soap and water 2-3 times per day, including shower. You may want to get a daily face soap, like Cetaphil.

u/AttilaTheHungover · 2 pointsr/malegrooming

Used to have this problem also, maybe just not as severe. I would always get itchy rash type things and ingrown hairs on my neck. The following worked for me, but it may not for anyone else considering everyone is different.

First, I only shave after I get out of a nice hot shower. Really opens up the pores and gets the hair soft. Then, instead of using typical canned commercial shaving cream, I switched to hair conditioner, and it works well, with the added bonus of adding a little moisture to your skin in the process. To actually shave, I switched to using one of these instead of one of the "five-blade-40-dollar-high-tec" razors. I know it's not technically a true straight razor but I'm in college ballin' on a budget so it's what I can afford. It will take some time to get good at, and you will cut yourself in the process, but once you get the hang of it, it is a much closer shave. Then, rinse your face, dry it off, and throw on some mild scented aftershave.

As suggested, /r/wicked_edge is an incredibly helpful community for things like this.

TL;DR stopped using commercial shaving cream, bought a "straight razor," shaved with the grain, fixed all my problems. /r/wicked_edge plug

Easy/Cheap things:

  • Shave your hair;its much easier to maintain and is easier to look good with
  • Pluck your eyebrows
  • Buy a few nice Button Down Shirts; they are fairly cheap and will give you the appearance of a man who knows what style is, at least until you eventually do.

    Expensive/Hard things:

  • Get better frames for your glasses or get contacts
  • Increase your exercise and sun exposure
u/RbHs · 5 pointsr/malegrooming

Some tips:

  • You should try an aluminum block after you shave. here Or a Styptic Pen, but I prefer the block personally.

  • A hot shower right before you shave will help as well along with a fresh razor.

  • When you shave, don't fight it if you feel the hair pulling. Just kind of let the razor do its thing and shave the hair.

  • Only shave with the grain. varies by location on your face/neck, usually down, but not always.

  • If your shaving for work daily, your boss isn't going to check for smoothness, so it just has to look good. You might be pressing too hard.

  • Warm water on the face to start the shave, cool water on the face after the shave and after aluminum block.

  • A good quality after shave lotion will further reduce skin irritation. I like Prosaro.

  • You could consider buying some preshave, but I don't use those. Good old warm water works fine for me.

  • Also, check out r/wicked edge as has been suggested by exaltedbladder.

Take a look at this, it has a cord tho.... http://www.amazon.com/Conair-The-Chopper-Customer-Styler/dp/B000X2FUXC/ref=sr_1_3?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1380594996&sr=1-3&keywords=conair+clippers

Note the difference between the width of the trimming surface. Depending on how furry you are you may want to get something that is more substantial.

Really it comes down to how much work you will need to do versus battery life and the power of the motor. I would LOVE to find a battery powered trimmer for the shower that doesn't die on me half way through the job but thus far no luck. Please tell me what you find on this. But so far a corded trimmer is my best option. As for shaving opportunities, I have no clue. I had that problem in college as well and never had a good solution.

u/Carlos13th · 2 pointsr/malegrooming

I am assuming you want a clean shave? Not the stubble look?

My personal preference for shaving the parts of my face that are unbeareded or for the rare occasions I forget that I look like a man baby without facial hair is a double edged razor and this shaving cream
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Taylor-Old-Bond-Street-Sandalwood/dp/B0007MW2ZW/ref=sr_1_2_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1464852677&sr=8-2&keywords=shaving+cream

Pick up a sample pack of blades too too see which ones you prefer, I tend to use feather blades.

This guide might help you with shaving. Personally I tend to skip the across the grain part to save time but that doesn't mean its the best way to do it.

Water based pomades. Stiff hold, easy to style with, and washes out easy. Most of the good stuff is upwards of $15. Here's a decent cheap alternative.

For what it's worth, American Crew is far from the best stuff out there.

Expensive, but it works. I like the little roller bottle for application. I had exactly the same thing you do. I shave with an electric razor using lectric shave as a lube, then just apply this afterward. Works like a champ.

u/tabatchoy · 1 pointr/malegrooming

I have this. I used to have my grandpa's which was practically the same but was in service for 20+ years until it finally died (due to my negligence in keeping it oiled).

I've only tried one battery-electric clipper when I was away from home. I liked it for traveling purposes, but for a workhorse, there's just something about a hefty wired one that I love. Plus, you don't have to worry about a battery going bad.

I loved the old one as well as this new one. I can tell that I'll be keeping it just as long if I can remember to keep it well-oiled.

u/erichie · 1 pointr/malegrooming

I went through this faze a few years ago and I found Mitchum, but it is antiperspirant. Here is one for sensitive skin. Good luck on your quest.

u/eoddc5 · 1 pointr/malegrooming

been using this philips norelco shaver on my body hair for years.... i love it. i do occasionally get ingrowns, so to fix that for the first 2-3 days after i "shave" i apply tend skin on the area and no problems

people complain that tend skin is expensive, but using it on my chest and stomach only after shaving for a few days (about weekly?), a 16oz bottle lasts for me, about a year.

good luck

Herban cowboy has one called "dusk" it's all I use. I found most deodorants gave me issues. This one is good, mild, and smells great.

I use this. It's not really soap and it's not specifically for acne. I still have mild acne, but this seems to work pretty well and doesn't dry out my face.

I have the norelco you posted. Vacuum works decently well, but I have a hard time fading my neckline with it. The comb has a hard time picking up the hairs so I have to clean up with scissors. I would recommend a corded peanut based on the info you gave.

A solid performer among deodorants is Tabac's Deodorant Stick. "This masculine scent possesses a blend of lavender, citrus, and warm florals." I can't wear antiperspirants so among deodorants only, I've found Tabac as well as Herban Cowboy to work well.

u/funnyleaves · 2 pointsr/malegrooming

Before trying anything extreme (like putting yogurt in your hair), start by using a daily moisturizer. I use Vaseline Men's Face & Body Lotion and it works great (cheap, absorbs quickly and doesn't get oily)

As for your head..I would also try using a conditioner. Some of these shampoos can be pretty harsh on the scalp.

THIS MAN SPEAKS THE TRUTH! Single bladed old school safety razors

Like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000LY2AKI

I bought one, if you use the right shaving soap like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007MW2ZW

with a good brush like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000G647Y8

you can get 200 really close shaves with an eight dollar box of blades. like these:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0013RZ2ZM?ie=UTF8&redirect=true

Not only that but you will smell better, no razor burn, and when women see what you shave with they'll think you're fucking manly as hell. The up front cost is steep but the long term savings is worth it.

I usually shave my face with one side of the blade and down there with the other side once every 3-4 days.

It takes longer to shave but it's so worth it.

u/GravyTrain6 · 1 pointr/malegrooming

By electric razor, do you mean Electric Razor or Hair Trimmer?

I would never recommend using an electric razor on any part of my body (very sensitive face, won't even use for that). I have found that using something like this - Andis Outliner via Amazon you'll get just as close as an electric razor without all the irritation.

u/FacelessBureaucrat · 1 pointr/malegrooming

You might need a better electric shaver. I use pre-shave stuff and shave before I shower, then throw on a little of this stuff after, then some of this at night keeps my face from drying out.

u/st45st23 · 3 pointsr/malegrooming

What kind, did you try? Although it's the best smell in the world, it doesn't bother me too much but I use this one that smells like as you guessed it cucumber Thayer Cucumber Witch Hazel

I'm sure they are better options on the skincare addict sub mentioned above, but this Jack black moisturizer is the first I've stumbled across that adequately moisturizes my face without feeling oily all day
