Yeah no shit. And 2ms is nothing dude. You gain widescreen with progressive output. And it does matter if you could use a working 144hz display because you have to take in account frame transmission.

For every 60hz display, you'll have 16.67ms frame transmission to display that frame. If you have a 144hz display, you will have only 7ms of frame transmission. So even if you add the lag of 2ms from input processing, it's still less than 10ms overall to display each full frame. By the way, CRTs do have input lag and it's not 0ms. The input lag from a CRT is like 670 nanoseconds or 0.00067ms (which is super negligible, but it's worth mentioning for sake of discussion).

How do you think other games are played dude? You think everyone uses a CRT? No, because 2ms is negligible - especially considering the GameCube's native send rate is 6ms. Obviously, for 60hz displays, CRT is the best for input lag, but 2ms is not going to matter. Human reaction time averages around 200ms. And there is not usually scenarios that come up that rely on a direct reaction. Even with a powershield, you're visually watching the projectile coming at you and can time when you're going to press the button.

The future will probably be on Dolphin with 144hz displays with adapters that have 1ms refresh rate/polling rates. It's possible there to have full RGB 4:4:4 widescreen progressive output with the ability to scale to HD resolutions with anti-aliasing. If the way the Raphnet adapter syncs it's polling rate to it's refresh/send rate holds true, then it's possible to have 1ms of adapter lag only instead of 6ms if you overclock your USB ports polling rate to 1000hz. That already beats a GameCube + CRT (22.67ms vs 9.95ms). Now if you take into account the graphics cards getting better and better, the GPU time will diminish as well. Also Dolphin efficiency will keep improving as well.

But that's all theoretical. Right now, the best way to play IMO (if you make considerations for progressive and widescreen output), is to get a Wii with GameCube inputs, a Sewell Wii to HDMI Converter, and a BenQ Gaming Monitor with Nintendont and the 20XX pack. If you only care about Input Lag, yeah "technically" a CRT + GameCube/Wii is better by 2ms because 144hz displays aren't working correctly with consoles. So like I said, for 60hz displays, CRTs win by a very negligible amount but you give up having progressive widescreen output. And yes I know they have made a few progressive 16:9 CRTs but they are extremely rare and it's not full RGB 4:4:4 (HDMI > VGA or Component).

Overall, my point is that Melee HD with a Gaming Monitor is completely competitively viable and you claimed above "display lag is a downside" - as if it is not a viable option. The problem isn't the 2ms of display lag - the problem was the adapters/converters. Before the Wii, to convert 480p progressive component analog, it took too much time. Like over a frame in a lot of cases. It just so happened that with the Wii, people were able to create an HDMI output. Nearly all communities stopped using CRTs a long time ago. (Although Speedrunners use CRTs for the same issue. Because it's more cost effective and consoles don't support 144hz output). But again, how do you think other gamers (who aren't limited from old-analog-only-consoles) are playing?

They're playing on Gaming Monitors.

Here's what I use. Not nearly the best, but it's manageable for the average Joe or group.

Current

  • Streaming: OBS Studio (Win 0.14.x)
  • Overlay: HTML/Javascript w/ StreamControl writing data to JSON and JS polling it.
  • Capture Device: Startech USB3HDCAP + XRGB-mini Framemeister
  • WebCams: 2x Logitech C920
  • Audio Mixer: Mackie Mix 8
  • Headsets: 2x Audio-Technica BPHS1
  • Misc: Powered Composite Splitter, Behringer HA400 Headphone Amp
  • Stream Tools: Nightbot, TwitchAlerts

    Deprecated

  • Capture Device: Dazzle DVC 100

BPHS1s are kind of the standard for accessible and reasonably priced xlr headsets.

I was getting decent quality out of my old dazzle before I switched, people just need to learn how to setup their bitrate properly to reduce artifacts and how to deinterlace their capture via amarectv or using the built in obs plugins (I used yadifx4 for the longest time) which do a nice, respectable job. Would I recommend a dazzle? Eh, it produces decent video for the price (got mine on ebay for $20), but has some compatibility issues - if you do a quick search for audio issues with the dazzle you'll find a couple threads. There are workarounds, but it's finicky.

Ideally though, streams should be capturing component video. It removes the need for software/external hardware deinterlacing. The issue here is that you either need a TV that supports component, or a component->composite converter, which I've seen people have performance issues with in the past.
My current setup uses a Framemeister to upscale the composite signal and handle the deinterlacing, outputting HDMI to the USB3HDCAP. The advantage is that I get to feed straight composite signals to any plain old CRT, which is great because I've been recording out of a suitcase the last few months while I move around.

I build my overlays in JavaScript and HTML; there's a layer of logic that polls a local JSON file written by StreamControl for changes and updates them on the page.

Just taking off on a flight. More info later. (It's later)

Don't buy a new controller, clean/ fix your existing one. It will cost a lot less (~15$) and you will be able to clean/fix all of your other controllers as well. May sound weird because I'm telling you to fix your existing one but don't buy replacement joysticks... the rubber will just fall off on those too... =[ Ive wasted some $ on shitty "replacement" joysticks that don't even last a day. Buy 1 pack of these [ **.com/Cyber-%E3%83%BBPremium-Slide-Cover-Clear-Black/dp/B00UURTXK6/ref=sr_1_1?s=instant-video&ie=UTF8&qid=1479033751&sr=8-1&keywords=3ds+circle+pad+cover ] and glue it to your joystick. I used an epoxy resin because i figured it would do the best gluing plastic on plastic but super glue would probably work too. You should still buy a tri-wing screwdriver [ ***.com/Gen-Lite-Tri-Wing-Triwing-Screwdriver-Tool/dp/B000VPBYS6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1479034061&sr=8-1&keywords=triwing+screwdriver ] and some wet-wipes to get inside the controller and clean up a bit. Mine works like brand new but even better because the joystick will never wear down. I'll never part with my original orange GC controller >.<

I guess the moderators dont want people posting links so they deleted my original post... lol anyways just replace "****" with "https://www.amazon" if you want to see those items

u/Tasgall · 2 pointsr/smashbros

> Is there a good controller with the layout of a pro but the joystick of a GC?

The Wii Classic Pro controller is the best controller design ever IMO. It has GC joysticks on the bottom, a good D-pad, and the face buttons feel great.

Unfortunately, it's one of the ones that awkwardly plugs into the Wii remote. If it was a standalone like the Wii U Pro controller it would be amazing.

I know this post is old, but I have a question about the pre order from Amazon. I just got a free prime trial that expires in about a week, and I saw that it gives a discount if I pre-order Smash Switch. Just wondering if the amazon listing is legit, cause I don’t wanna get ripped off. Thanks

Super Smash Bros. - Nintendo Switch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N5OKGLH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_XY2cBb4KP1AR4

u/Waxwit · 1 pointr/smashbros

does anyone have experience buying used controllers off of amazon? like this? https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00007IRC5/ref=dp_olp_0?ie=UTF8&condition=all&qid=1499150179&sr=8-1

how do you know what exactly acceptable, good, and very good look like?

u/bringerofjustus · 1 pointr/smashbros

I own two pro controllers and I love them for Wind Waker, Pikmin, and Tropical Freeze. I'm pretty sure it'll be a great substitute for Gamecube controllers. The color scheme is a bit of an issue, as there currently exist only 2 colors, black and white, and if you want every controller to be different, the only thing you can do (which I highly reccomend) is to take the controllers apart with a fancy nintendo screwdriver and trade the buttons around.

u/BabushkaSlayer · 2 pointsr/smashbros

I'd go with this if they are tourney legal. Not sure on it, but my friend bought 4 of these and 4 used original controllers and they are the best I've ever used.

u/justinvh · 14 pointsr/smashbros

Just so you know, the RL2455HM can natively handle YPbPr via a breakout cable. Use something like this StarTek breakout adapter and you're all set.

I've also done a hardware mod for native HDMI from the GameCube with success: https://twitter.com/jbvh_/status/641633023750897664

In the end, I prefer the Wii + Component Cables + StarTek adapter. Just significantly easier. The other setups are cool. I enjoy my modded GameCube, but from a practicality standpoint, the Wii is easier to use and software mod.

EDIT: For audio, I usually route it separately, but you can just as easily get an Y-female RCA-> 3.5mm male and route it to the BenQ.

Re posting this from another thread:

If you plan on getting a 3DS XL, I have to recommend this.
It makes your 3DSXL FEEL like a controller.
And if it's any kind of 3DS, reguklar, 2ds or Xl I reccomend this it makes it feel better, and it's easier to do tilts.

I can vouch for the quality of both products and if you have any questions feel free to ask.

u/QueenMeteor · 1 pointr/smashbros

My controller of choice is the Wii Classic Controller Pro. The face buttons can take a bit of getting used to, but the sticks are really nice and have the same octagon gates, it feels good to hold, and the shoulder buttons are worlds better than the GC's shoulder buttons. The GC's shoulder buttons are the sole reason I can never use that controller

edit: this thing https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/G/01/videogames/detail-page/B002TLTBN0.01.lg.jpg Not the wii u pro controller

I'm thinking of going digital mainly because my Switch is much more a handheld console than a TV console to me and I have PTSD from losing my favorite DS cartridges back in the day (Rest in peace, Sonic Rush and Fossil Fighters Champions). It doesn't help that I lost the cartridge holders that came with my carrying case the week I got it... (There was nothing holding them down and they just fell out! 😭)

Plus, it'll be way more convenient, since I don't have to worry about switching the cartidge out (eliminating potentially thousands of opportunities to lose it! 😄) I'm running out of space on my Switch rn, so I'm probably gonna pick up one of these too.

The box art would be nice though, and I know that if I get digital, it may not be around forever. What would you recommend? I'm actually super anxious I'll make the wrong decision plz send help 😓

u/thatJainaGirl · 1 pointr/smashbros

For lagless SD recording on a budget, I recommend either the Dazzle DVC-100 or the Diamond VC500. I have and use both, and they're pretty great.

u/Maxrdt · 2 pointsr/smashbros

Honestly I'm a much bigger fan of these that I just got from amazon instead. I don't really trust a $20 controller, and for that price you can pick up two of these. Installation was easy and it's just like playing on a classic N64 controller, but better.

u/Aegisth · 1 pointr/smashbros

I know you said that you don't want to buy a console but think of this:

  • Nintendo Wii - $60
  • Melee - $50
  • GC Controller - $30
  • GC Memory Card - $10

You'll get started with Melle for $150. Less if you can buy locally and find things on CL.

Otherwise, if you want to do Melee. Dolphin and Melee with a GC controller and Adapter will be the best for you.
u/KeroZero · 2 pointsr/smashbros

Right now the Pro Controller is down to $59.99 almost everywhere so it may be a good time if you want to go that route.

Personally, I ordered a couple PowerA Wireless Gamecube controllers. They have all the same buttons as a Pro Controller, with the added benefit of using AA batteries. I have their Switch wireless controller and aside from feeling lighter (thus slight cheap feeling) it holds up really well and even has remappable buttons on the underside.

u/enzothelorenzo · 1 pointr/smashbros

Wii U Pro Controller,
Wii Classic Pro Controller, or the
Wii U Smash Wireless GC Controllers

I highly recommend these three if you can't find the adapter and if you want to be comfortable to play SSB then the three that I mention will do but if you want to use the controllers with other games then I highly recommend the Wii U Pro since the controller is mostly compatible with other games.

Pretty solid controller. Feels just like the original, though i think it's slightly smaller

I got a TV that looks like the same model. but its a "disney princess" one. its pink. the channel indicator is princess cinderella and the volume is a swimming ariel with a bubble trail.
the settings menu has flowers all over it.

I say its the same TV cause take away the pooh plastic figure on top and paint it pink and its the exact same. (menu buttons give it away)

I acquired it because our neighbors were moving out, and they left 2 CRTs on the street. ones a 31 or so inch and the other was the disney princess one.

EDIT: its this one http://www.amazon.com/Disney-Princess-13-Color-TV/dp/B0001NE52A but without the tiara thing on top (looks like it was removed)

Here's one I recommend, but almost anything from TP-Link will do the trick.

How well they work depends on your house's circuitry, and which outlets you're plugging the pieces into. Try getting one from a place with a good return policy just in case.

The advantage of a wired connection over wireless isn't necessarily speed, but rather latency between the device and modem/router and the consistency. If you're on the other side of the world then your ping will have a noticeable decrease, and less likely to get packet loss.

u/NinjaCoachZ · 3 pointsr/smashbros

Ah, I see. If you had a GameCube, I would have recommended just getting a Wii U, but if you don't have that, then the Wii is worth it.

Try checking some of the used listings on Amazon here. There's one for $46 + shipping that seems to be a fairly complete package.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0009VXBAQ/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&condition=used

u/_Donzi · 1 pointr/smashbros

I guess you could try here but be ready to spend at least £30 for a used one. You could probably find cheaper some place else

u/madavismadavis · 1 pointr/smashbros

No luck at Home Depot...but looks like this guy isn't shipping from halfway around the world, and should do the trick.

u/EndVSGaming · 5 pointsr/smashbros

I haven't bought a GC, personally I would recommend a Wii. A lot, maybe even most, people playing Melee at tourneys are doing it with a Wii. You could buy them from a local store used, or off eBay or Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0009VXBAQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_.nJZAb73XHZ05
Wii
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000094G2O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_VqJZAbF9GV0CN
Melee

There is no emulation on Wii for GC, so everything will run correctly.

u/Latromi · 14 pointsr/smashbros

It's not the chainsaw controller, but there is a guy who comes to my local meets and uses the Gamecube ASCII Controller. It's huge and clunky, just in a completely different (far more functional) way.

u/HappyPollen · 3 pointsr/smashbros

This is the SD card + reader I picked up when it was on sale for the holidays. If you're just looking for a reader, this one seems to be the most recommended. Or if you have a decent electronics store nearby like Fry's or BB, you can compare with them.

u/GoonyKnightMan · 4 pointsr/smashbros

DW I'm probably using this, so it's a Gamecubeee ctonroller with 3 extra buttons.

Plus, the GC adapter has more input lag that a wireless Pro Controller. Whether or not Ultimate will have a 7-frame input lag across the board like Sm4sh I don't know, but I'm hopefully gonna be able to use this thing.

u/OmegaTyrant · 1 pointr/smashbros

I used this to record Melee, Brawl, and Brawl mods http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000VM60I8/

It's cheap, yet produces as good quality as you can get on a Wii, and it's really simple to use, being ready for use out of the box. The only real problem I found with it is that it doesn't record in widescreen, though that's irrelevant for Melee of course.

You can see my Melee/Brawl videos on my youtube channel for examples of its quality https://www.youtube.com/user/OmegaTyrant4792

u/MrEphraim · 2 pointsr/smashbros

I'm interested in something like this, but theres a lot of mixed reviews on it.

The Elgato HD60 is an absolutely abysmal capture card, and /u/OathToAwesome is wise to avoid it. USB 2.0 cards are already bad enough, and trying to capture 1080p60 over USB 2.0 is a complete joke.

I highly recommend the XCAPTURE-1 as a very good card. There's also the new Startech USB3HDCAP (The XCAPTURE-1's little brother) which can capture 1080p60 but has no passthrough (so you need a splitter to play on your TV, usually not too expensive). Avoid the Extremecap U3 -- it has...issues (like not being able to maintain a 60fps capture sometimes, or capturing bad frames here and there). The Live Gamer HD is a good standby for 720p60 or 1080p30 capture over PCIe. The AVerMedia c027 is also another option for 720p60, but can't capture 1080p.

Just...avoid USB 2.0 capture cards. They have a built-in delay due to the need to compress video to fit it over USB 2.0 bandwidth, and you will be saving yourself a lot of headache from dealing with the sync between the console, mic, and webcam if you avoid them. Stick with PCIe or get a USB 3.0 capture card.

Here is an affordable one. Basically they use the existing electrical wires of your house to transmit data.

Some homes don't work as well due to the quality of the wiring, and potential interference, etc. I also am under the impression that generally you can only have one set of adapters plugged in at once, since there's not a good way to separate the signals, but it's possible that newer adapters have found a way to circumvent this.
