I’ve read a few biographies/autobiographies of bands/musicians I like that wouldn’t fit the obscure/underground description (eg: ‘Heroes And Villains: The True Story Of The Beach Boys’) – but to be honest, I’m not a big fan of music literature.
However I might make an exception with the recent recommendation of ‘Swim Through the Darkness: My Search for Craig Smith and the Mystery of Maitreya Kali’ which apparently the author Mike Stax researched and wrote over 15 years https://www.vice.com/en_uk/article/7bmxzx/swimming-through-the-darkness-the-hunt-for-craig-smith-psychedelic-messiah
Edit: The Butthole Surfers biography sounds interesting also : )

And this essential book that almost no one has ever heard of, although it is the only book from its time, written by an actual jazz musician who was there . An absolute gem.
