I'd also like to point out that a Wii can play Wii and Gamecube games, but a Wii U can play Wii U and Wii games (but not Gamecube). Which you want I guess really depends on what you are wanting to play. Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are Wii games, so that limits you to the Wii or Wii U if you actually want to play those, but Super Mario Odyssey will be a Switch exclusive.

-------------------------

If you get that $38 Wii, here is what you can do.

The Wii I linked to includes everything you need to play:

  • Super Mario Galaxy 1
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2
  • New Super Mario Bros Wii
  • Mario Kart Wii

as well as most other Wii games. The only thing it doesn't have is a Wii Motion Plus accessory, so you can't play any game that requires those. Controllers that have that built in aren't expensive, though. It also comes with Wii Play which is fun little game that comes with a bunch of mini games like air hockey and stuff like that.

Buy a Gamecube controller to go with it, and now you can play:

  • Mario Kart Double Dash
  • Super Mario Sunshine

as well as every other Gamecube game. There are lots of games for both Wii and Gamecube, but I'm sticking with Mario and Mario Kart since that is what you mentioned. Luigi's Mansion is also a Gamecube game that isn't strictly a "Mario" game but maybe it's close enough.

From what I'm reading online, the Wii virtual console is still running. That means that you can buy and download some NES, SNES, N64, etc. games. I have no idea how long that will continue to work since the Wii is so old, but you should be able to play the games you've already downloaded even if they shut down the download service in the near future. [Edit: here is the listing of available Wii virtual console games. I guess it is still running.]

The Wii is a good budget option that does let you play quite a few games.

    ---------------------------------------------

If you get the $200 Wii U, you can play:

  • Mario Kart 8
  • Super Mario 3D World
  • New Super Mario Bros U
  • Yoshi's Wooly World (maybe close enough to a Mario game?)

as well as any other Wii U game.

If you get a Wii controller, then you can also play:

  • Super Mario Galaxy 1
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2
  • New Super Mario Bros Wii
  • Mario Kart Wii

as well as any other Wii games that you could have played on the Wii. You can't play any of the Gamecube games, though.

The Wii U's virtual console is still active for sure, so you can also buy and download some older games for older consoles. I don't think Gamecube is included in that, though, but NES, SNES, N64, etc. will be. Not every game, but a lot of the good ones will be there. You can browse your options here. Additionally, the Wii's virtual console will be available on the Wii U as well, assuming that it is still running. I doubt that it has much that isn't already in the Wii U's virtual console, though.

The Wii U is more expensive than a Wii. You still get all of the Wii's games, but you are trading the ability to play older Gamecube games for the ability to play newer Wii U games. You're also getting a virtual console that will for sure work for a while as well as the ability to use off-screen play on the gamepad.

    -----------------------

The Nintendo Switch is $300 and is brand new. It can't play Wii or Wii U games, however, all upcoming games will be for the Switch. You can play Switch games, and the virtual console that lets you buy older games isn't out yet but will be coming soon. Anything new that comes out will be for the Switch. The Switch is also portable, kind of a mix between a console and a handheld. This is the current generation's console, and it was only released in March of this year.

First off, this is the best tutorial out there, hands down:

http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-faqs-guides-tutorials-only/96886-guide-softmod-any-wii.html

Here's a thread on wiihacks.com that lists compatible HDDs:

http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-faqs-guides-tutorials-only/36504-usb-compatibility-list.html

I've purchased two of these for two Wiis in the house:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001FWCDMA/ref=oh_details_o03_s01_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They're small and sleek, look good when paired with the Wii. I used one a third one of these when I hacked a friend's Wii for him. They're great.

I recently added the Homebrew channel to our Wii U and so attached a spare HDD I had lying around the house -- something salvaged from a computer that had issues. For that I used this powered USB enclosure:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0015LURY2/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It was just a standard WD SATA HDD, nothing special about it. Haven't had one problem with any of them.

An aside to describe an issue I ran into: I had always formatted my external HDDs as WBFS. Recently I decided to add some Gamecube backups and wanted to see them listed in Configurable USB Loader alongside the Wii games. To make that happen, I had to convert the WBFS partition to FAT32. This page describes the issue and also provides a tool that will convert the WBFS partition to FAT32, at the same time preserving your existing backups:

http://gbatemp.net/threads/wii-and-gamecube-backups-on-the-same-hdd.333237/

One other note: I strongly recommend using a 2GB SD card (not SDHC) as all of the tutorials recommend. I've used 8GB SDHC cards without problem for literally years... then recently learned my lesson when I wanted to run SSBB Project M on the Wii U. There's no getting around it in that case: you have to have a 2GB SD card.

(My boys are NUTS for Project M!)

Happy hacking. If you like tinkering, it's a great way to spend a rainy afternoon.

My headphones have adjustable volume. How would that compare to something like this though? https://www.amazon.com/Eeejumpe-inches-Stereo-Splitter-3-5mm-Adapter/dp/B0009JFF7A/ref=pd_rhf_dp_p_img_3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=P2G1M8GC9K6E6WTK4MJC

Edit: Actually, scratch that. I'd prefer not having to keep switching the audio cables from the TV to headphones, so the Wii2HDMI converter with headphones that include an adjustable dial seems like the best solution. Appreciate the help!

Classic controller pro is a godsend.

Also This is pretty beautiful.

Most memory cards work even if they are SDHC (4GB-32GB), but most guides recommend using a 2 GB or less memory card to be sure it'll work. Here is a cheap one i found http://www.amazon.com/Verbatim-Secure-Digital-Memory-95407/dp/B000JLUBEK dont buy the one the other guy posted, its over priced and is an SDHC not a regular SD. After you install homebrew you should get a 16 gb sd card for games. Theyre like $10.

Edit:or you could buy a 16gb and it will probably work. If it doesnt then buy the 2gb one.

You'll also want to buy a Classic Controller Pro. It works great for the games on the older systems, and it's good for newer games like Goldeneye (must-buy) and Call of Duty.

I've used these for a few years to great success.

Simultaneously?

Bust-A-Move Bash on disc, up to 8 players (4 Wii Remotes and 4 GameCube-compatible controllers, if your Wii is an older model with the 4 GameCube ports)

Bomberman Blast for 1000 points, downloadable on WiiWare, up to 8 players (4 Wii Remotes and 4 GameCube-compatible controllers, if your Wii is an older model with the 4 GameCube ports)

Alternating?

Super Smash Bros. Brawl allows up to 16 players to cycle in and out, or to play in a tournament.

WarioWare: Smooth Moves, after you beat the game, it opens up a multiplayer mode that allows up to 12 people to take turns

Target Toss Pro: Bags on WiiWare has up to 16 players alternate, but probably due to Nintendo's filesize restrictions, there isn't much visual or gameplay variety, so it can get repetitive pretty quickly, especially with 16 people.

I have successfully used my PS2 controller, with a PS2->GC adapter.

If I remember correctly, it even let me play Tatsunoko vs Capcom with a NubyTech SF pad.

You might want to use Amazon's "Customers who viewed this item..." feature.

Apart from clicking around on their site, it works like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Legend-Zelda-Twilight-Princess-Nintendo-Wii/dp/B000FQBPCQ/ref=pd_sxp_f_pt

Take the part after /dp/, so B000FQBPCQ in this case. Put http://www.amazon.com/sim/ in front, and /2/&pf=video_games at the end, like this:

http://www.amazon.com/sim/B000FQBPCQ/2/&pf=video_games

It really depends on how much quality you demand. I for myself was never happy with knockoffs and always bought (and still buy) original controllers, no matter for which platform. Especially for the Wii there are sometimes promotions in local stores, i.e. I got a Wii Classic Controller Pro for 18 € in a local store. That’s pretty decent and I also use it to play games in DeSmuME.

u/gigantuar · 8 pointsr/wii

You can purchase an add-on that takes care of that for ya.

u/josephgee · 1 pointr/wii

Yeah I saw that on amazon, while looking to see prices, also okami hasn't been said its also $12 and red steel 2 also $12

u/OmegaVesko · 1 pointr/wii

Yeah, it doesn't even support an Ethernet cable connection out of the box. If you wanted to connect it wired for some reason, you'd have to buy one of these.

u/keane_eye · 1 pointr/wii

I bought this composite-to-vga video converter and it works in displaying the video onto my monitor. Something to note is that you still need a sound solution - I use this composite-to-3.5mm converter and plug my headphones/speaker into it with a male-male 3.5mm. It's not the most elegant setup but it gets the job done.

u/jordanlund · 3 pointsr/wii

First start by getting the Wii component cables. Then you need a way to convert component to VGA.

Here's a cable for $0.66 that converts VGA to component, all you need to do is get some RCA couplers for the ends to turn them from male to female and you can plug the Wii component cable right in.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FM3EQ0/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000F4MOGO&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0XK6PR05VXJP8JSBSQPY

$1.74 for the connector bit:

http://www.amazon.com/Steren-Video-audio-coupler-black/dp/B000JFDZ4Y/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1311088342&sr=8-13

Of course, this is just for video. If you want sound then you need to plug the red and white audio cables into an amplifier of some kind.

Twilight Princess goes for a shitton of money, for example. There are probably others.
http://www.amazon.com/The-Legend-Zelda-Twilight-game-cube/dp/B0009UBR3A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1375890712&sr=8-1&keywords=twilight+princess+gc

I know you were talking about the VC when you said you want to support Nintendo but in the next sentence you talked about buying used GC games and I just wanted to pop in and say that those aren't necessarily good deals.

u/ebi-san · 3 pointsr/wii

I bought one of these years ago, I wouldnt reccomend it. Barely enough room for anything other than the system by itself.

u/sicount · 2 pointsr/wii

Have a look at this product: http://www.amazon.com/Wii-Classic-Controller-Grip-Nintendo/dp/B000PHX4KQ

It lets you clip the Wii remote to the back of a Classic Controller.
