I would do a few things different. Use paper towels instead of newspaper. There is zero risk of ink transfer that way. But more concerning is that newspaper tends to be slightly acidic and you want to keep you stamps in a pH neutral environment as much as possible.
Second, while the stamps are still slightly dam, I press them between a new set of paper towels with something heavy and flat stack on top. If you use the book method shown in the video, make sure the stamps are completely dry first.
For storage you can consider something like Vario pages. They come in a variety of separations.

Lastly, you can try steaming the stamps and separating them. That might allow to you to preserved the gum. Personally, I've never been successful at doing that, but it might be I just don't have the patients.
