I use 2x4 basics attachments. They hook right into pre-cut 2x4s and are incredibly adjustable so they can be as high or as wide as you want. For a sharp, clean look you can paint them yourself.
Not the fanciest solution, but it works great thanks to how easy they are to assemble and customize sizes!

What makes those great is that you only need straight cuts and some screws and you can build the whole thing in an hour or two.
edit: Sorry. If you use the Shelflinks, I'd stain before assembly, but after cutting. Then use polyurethane over the stain.
