I'm guessing this was using the Raspberry Pi 3 with the Retro Pie OS. I have done the same thing, but chose different controllers from 8bitdo

Android devices. If you have an Android phone, you have a portable emulator that at minimum will do up to PS1 and NDS, and at the highest end can emulate through PSP, Dreamcast, and even some Gamecube games. Bluetooth controllers for phones are cheap, and can come as big or small as you like, from SNES controller sized, to something big enough to clip around a tablet.

  1. The Amazon link says you use the GPIO to connect it to the DSI port so I would assume you could use the screen by itself so long as it has a power source of its own. So yeah you can use it alone + plug into HDMI port for a bigger screen if needed.

  2. As long as your battery pack can power at least 2 amps with a 5 volt charge you should be ok to power up the Pi. They say recommended power supply is 2.5 amp though so up to you if you wanna get a higher power rated battery pack.

  3. Can't confirm this as I used wired USB controllers, but from what I've seen other people on this subreddit, I would say 10-15' bluetooth connection would work.

  4. Again, can't confirm personally but reading other posts seems like you can, so long as you pair the controllers in a certain order. Also, I think you can edit the settings with a config file or using Retroarch.

  5. If I didn't care to be wired up, these are greatly recommended everywhere. (https://www.amazon.com/8Bitdo-Wireless-Bluetooth-Controller-Joystick/dp/B01MXLEYZ8/ref=lp_9176188011_1_5?srs=9176188011&ie=UTF8&qid=1492561323&sr=8-5)

I got mine at Amazon UK - here.

They're on Amazon US here or here (for 20 cents more, but with a case).
