I like the soft cover. It feels nice on my hands. I'm not super careful with it, but I also don't mind much if it gets worn or even a little stained. I estimate it'll take me about 6 months to fill, (from when I started it in January), so it probably won't be in too awful shape by then.
I like the designs on the cover ok. It would be cooler if I could design my own cover—but realistically, I'm never going to get around to doing that. I'm not that arts&craftsy, and it just isn't a priority. I do like blank covers, too; the minimalism appeals to me. But it's nice sometimes to have pre-generated artwork on the cover for me. I see a few icons I like, or one of my kids will point out a shape they like or something.
Also, for the record, if you don't want the designs on the cover, STM makes journals without them. They call the plain cover ones the "Pro" version instead of the "iconic" version.
