Are you familiar with literature circles? I'm intrigued by them after reading Academic Reading Circles but have not yet had a chance to implement them. One blog post on literature circles gave these basic guidelines: First, individually, Ss make a connection. T checks comprehension. Then Ss in groups of four are each assigned a role: discussion director, word searcher, summarizer, illustrator. Give sentence frames for things like synthesizing (can put on a menu board at each table). Have each table record their conversation so T can review later.
