Hi, I think the Acer Spin 3 is one of the best value 2-in-1s currently that is very budget friendly. The i7 processor, 16 GB RAM, and a 512 GB SSD are very well suited for your uses. A more premium device would be the LG Gram 14 2-in-1.

How about this Acer Spin 3 Convertible Laptop ? It would actually be a very decent pick based on what you do and are looking for. It has a nice 8th gen quad core i7 processor, massive 16 GB RAM and large 512 GB SSD.. That certainly is enough performance power for what you do and it does have a nice touchscreen and pen for notes taking , weighs well under 5 pounds, has a decent build quality and awesome battery life. What is also ideal is its 14 inches display that is neither too big or small.

Everyone I know that has gotten a chrome book didn’t like it. Most started falling apart (the older models) and the Os was annoying. And they couldn’t manage things as they wanted like on a Windows. I believe you can get something for the gas power if not better in the price range. For the <$900 mark I would be looking for something like this:

CPU: 8th generation Intel Processor, most likely i5-8(something)U, or at best i7-8750h

GPU: If not for gaming it really is not needed to have a separate graphics card, integrated graphics like an mx150 will do find for most video watching and stuff. May become a little slower if using photoshop heavily or other programs like CAD’ing

RAM: looking. For 8+ Gb DDR4. Should be able to handle everything you’re looking at doing

Memory: look for an SSD, try to get over half a Tb (512Gb) as that will give you space in the future. Maybe a SSD and HDD mix could work as you used the SSD for faster boot and load times, and the HDD for storage.

Screen: I don’t know how much color correct stuff you will be using, but maybe a 4K or touchscreen may be nice on your preference

Based on that here are a couple I could think of after a quick googling:

$810 Acer Spin 3: seems like a decent one, has a nice i7-8565U processor, 16Gb DDR4, 512Gb NVMe SSD with fingerprint reader and stylus. Also is o a tablet laptop with some people really like.

$588 Lenovo Ideapad: If you want to go a cheaper route this looks decent, a nice i5-8250U processor with 8GB DDR4 memory. The main drawback I see is the 1Tb HDD, which would give you significant battery but also take significantly longer to load applications and boot up. It does have a optical drive (DVD) which most laptops don’t have anymore however.

Just search and look around, watch some reviews, you can find one great for you!

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QXL8YCX/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1 I ended up getting this with a bunch of external adaptors and drives. With all of the stuff it still came out to 742.00 dollars :) I think I did ok :)

I would recommend this Acer Spin 3
because it comes with everything you need, i7 quad core CPU which is one of the best in your budget and great for your usage, 16GB of RAM for smooth multitasking, Good SSD storage of 512GB for faster boot up and loading, 14 inch Full HD IPS screen which is a must have for this price range, high build quality, and it has a great sale because of black friday.

Cool, glad to help transfer some new info.

I just got this Acer Spin 3 (i7 / 16GB / 521 GB NVME drive / 2-in-1 touchscreen) for $750 (after tax on Amazon Prime day last week). This will be my mobile/backup machine and I'm liking it for that so far. I'm disappointed with the sound quality (very tinny 2000s laptop speakers compared to my last laptop that I dropped and accidentally killed) but I'll usually use headphones anyway. Othewise it's snappy and pretty fun to edit photos with (using RawTherapee and Gimp). Use this as a baseline and do a little more research and see if there's anything similar in that price range.

Got any opinions on this?

If you don't game much I would suggest getting something more student-oriented such as the Lenovo Yoga 2-in-1 which is able to game but offers you more as a student

  • 15.6" 4K IPS Multi-Touch Laptop,
  • Intel Core i7,
  • 16GB RAM,
  • 256GB SSD,
  • Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050 2G,
  • HDMI,Backlit Keyboard, Fingerprint Reader

This laptop is great for editing as it has a quad-core CPU, a fairly powerful GPU and most importantly a very color accurate screen. It is well built and has an aluminum chassis which is ideal for traveling. It can take a few bumps without breaking as well. Its SSD is both fast and reliable. Additionally, it has lots of RAM so you won't have any lag when you have 20+ tabs open while streaming and working on a few documents.

You can also look at the Acer Spin 3 SP314-53N-77AJ which is on sale and could serve you well

I am looking for a laptop for note-taking and programming as a student and I won't be using it for gaming. I am looking for something that is light and has a long-lasting battery (like 10 hours or more). I saw the Acer Spin 3 https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Convertible-Fingerprint-Rechargeable-SP314-53N-77AJ/dp/B07QXL8YCX/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?keywords=acer+spin+3&qid=1564085183&s=gateway&sr=8-2 but I don't know much about laptops and I have no idea if this is a good option for me or not.

Gaming laptops would be best because they have lots of CPU & GPU power but if you can remote to the lab you can save some cash. The Acer Spin 3 Convertible Laptop, 14" Full HD IPS Touch, 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8565U, 16GB DDR4, 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD, Backlit KB, Fingerprint Reader, Rechargeable Active Stylus, SP314-53N-77AJ would be a fast student laptop that can manage some Matlab & Soildworks

The Lenovo flex 15.6 seems to have most of what you are looking for. You'll need to get an Active Pen on the side for note taking though. there are other versions that have a dedicated GPU, but I can't speak to their availability down under.

Also for consideration, the Acer Spin 3 seems to have most of what you are looking for as well. It includes the active pen, has excellent battery life, but doesn't have discrete graphics.
