Current code calls for a smoke alarm in every room. Don't remove the smoke alarm.
You can, however, install an old work round box in the hallway, kill the breaker the smoke alarm is on, fish some 14/2 through to where the smoke alarm is with a fish tape, wire nut to the hot/neutral/ground for the smoke alarm (leave the red traveler alone, if present), and install a pull chain fixture on your new round box. The smoke alarm circuit doesn't have to be dedicated; you can tap it for a light fixture. But leave the smoke alarm in place. Fire safety is no joke.
Oh, and prime everything with shellac and buy yourself an ozone generator to handle the smoke smell.

Do yourself a favor and have an ozone machine handy. It will eliminate any smell. Read up on how it works and use only as needed.
