An Anker one off of Amazon, I bought one for my S3 and it massively improved it. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00567Y7A6/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/280-9205787-0958720

I've also got a GS2 i9100 from Bell that is unlocked for use on Telus. The battery was completely brutal when i got the phone. I could probably leave it on standby and it would only last 8 hours or so before dying (with data on).

With respect to battery life, i picked up an aftermarket battery from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Anker-GT-I9100-Compatible-SGH-I777-T-moblie/dp/B00567Y7A6/ref=sr_1_4?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1343515198&sr=1-4&keywords=i9100+anker
and now i'd say my battery is about on par with what my htc desire used to be. It's not great, but i can get through most of the day without having to recharge it (i keep a charger at work, which i plug my phone into for an hour or two at the end of the day just to top it off before going home).

With respect to ROMS, i'm using CM9 RC2 at the moment and it seems to not have the same restart or SOD (sleep of death) problems that other ICS roms seem to have. It also supports 1080p video recording, and i can't think of any features it's missing besides FM radio.

Cyanogen wiki has a step by step guide here: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_II:_Full_Update_Guide

you can get CM9 RC2 here: http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?type=RC&device=galaxys2
just make sure that, for any CM rom, you download the latest google apps package: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Latest_Version#Google_Apps

Get the larger 1900mAh battery. You can get 4800, but you phone becomes very bulky.

If you know how to; root. Install Titanium Backup and freeze/delete the bloat.

Failing that, root and install stock Android Jellybean or Cyanogenmod.
