Nice choice! I did this with my dog in the Fall of 2016 for his backpacking retirement trip and we went from Daniel Boone to Davidson River. Be careful at the Deep Gap shelter, which is about halfway into the hike. There are some converging trailheads there, and I went off track and wound up on a forest service road, which made me miss about 2 miles of the trail. Daniel Boone to Shining Rock is quite strenuous, but the hike flattens out overall once you get up on Black Balsam and is pretty easy after that. You'll have a great time!
